It Follows (2014)
Sex ed meets Halloween.
I had anticipated this film for months, after hearing grown men say it stayed with them for days in a television interview. The concept seemed original and I had fairly high expectations. Alas, I struggled to stay with this film for its full duration.
If you like a film that genuinely scares where, at its very heart, something thought provoking lies, choose something other than It Follows. I watched this with my mother who generally avoids all scary movies, yet she thought nothing of this one.
No idea why it has been so hyped. 'Follow' the queue for a refund, oh and be careful who you sleep with.
The Babadook (2014)
Knock knock knock...
This film is more about human emotion - grief, anger and despair - than terror or jump scares. The Babadook takes an everyday concept, bedtime stories, and makes it into something we can fear, not dissimilar to what The Ring did (for me, the top modern horror).
Like several films of its genre, what we do not see is often more eerie than what we are shown. I felt the ending let the film down somewhat, but I know that many will disagree with that. I have read opinions of the ending and still feel that there was too much symbolism; the 'monster' concept was more successful than any readings that the conclusion prompts.
Overall, I would recommend watching The Babadook. This is a psychological thriller with a good premise that makes you think, which can be somewhat of a rarity in horror.
Under the Skin (2013)
Arty, tedious and utterly bizarre.
Artistic and consistently odd, this film is unlike anything I have seen before.
Beautiful cinematography, a good performance by Scarlett Johansson, little else of merit and hardly any dialogue. I believe there are several take-home messages. 1) Beauty is only skin deep; 2) All men regardless of race, colour and ability are basically the same; 3) Nature can incite fascination where none exists; 4) Not everyone has their cake and eats it.
If I could reclaim the time I spent watching this, I would. I felt I had to continue watching until the end, but the ending is arguably the biggest disappointment of the film.
