World's Deadliest Snakes (2020)
surprisingly awesome
This was a really fun show. The footage of the snakes themselves is really high quality; definitely very interesting and fun to watch
Also I admittedly kind of of give extra credit because they have a completely made up "power ranking" of the different snake groups. They rate the snakes on four different categories and somehow choose an order of the top 10 for each region. Very arbitrary but I'm a sucker for that kind of thing so keep in mind it has a little bit of cheesiness but ultimately it's pretty fun.
Very educational too so I have to give it props. All around a really interesting and fun show.
30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary: Part One (2023)
A complex look into a simple show
Saw that the second part was playing on ESPN and was immediately intrigued. Of course, like any kid growing up in the 90s I loved American Gladiators and I was in the mood for a documentary so I flipped on the first part.
I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting; of course something about how the show was created and how it was run behind the scenes but one of the first interviews was with Malibu and I realized that yeah, profiling the Gladiators themselves was a really cool idea. The doc touches on the production of the show itself but like every kid I idolized the Gladiators and it was great to see the human side of them
The main conceit of the creator of the show being a complete scumbag helped really drive a lot of the narrative and made the doc into something I wasn't expecting at all but was really relishing. The show itself is always fun but I have to admit, my heart broke a few times watching it after seeing some of the Gladiators be vulnerable about what they went through, physically and emotionally, and where they ended up.
Turning Red (2022)
The movie isn't "woke" and I appreciate the message but it's very flawed and doesn't feel like a Pixar film
I have no issues with the message nor the diversity (Toronto is a very diverse city, of course there will be Sikhs, etc) but sadly it feels like this movie is going to get review bombed by people who can't stand seeing straight white people
it should, however, be lowly rated because it just isn't good. It's way too fast paced, the humor feels subpar for a Pixar film and the message, while endearing, is extremely heavy handed. As I'm watching it, I can't help but think that it feels like a Disney movie than a Pixar-specific one.
