Mind Your Language (1977–1986)

Some of the best comedy of the era.
4 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I remember picking the DVD set at some store in a mall, near where I used to live, and I think it is one of the best comedies to this day. I was never around during it's original airing either.

This show would not be aired today, due to the fact that it is not 'politically correct', and that people would see it as a goldmine for lawsuits, to get money.

I think this show had some character progression as well, seeing the cast member learn English, and new members coming in/leaving mid- series.

This show, even if you aren't the most educated in linguistics, is easy to watch, and understand. It is great watching some of them trying to grasp the idioms of the English language.

My only criticism, which isn't major one, was that there was no solid ending... I don't know if it was because the show had the rug pulled out from underneath them, and had it canceled prematurely, or that there are some lost final episodes that were never captured.

Regardless, it is sad that now, the cast members are either dead, or old and tired. What a pity.

Anyway, give this show a watch... You don't need to be smart to enjoy it! :)

Family Guy (1999– )
7/10
Like many, it has fallen into a downfall spiral.
24 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Well, Family Guy has garnered my attention, until recent years.

Like many shows, it has taken a serious dip in quality. I found the more recent episodes/seasons have been more political, and less about the characters.

I remember watching a recent episode, and then watching the very first episode, 'Death has a Shadow'... Did I then realize that the show isn't once what it was...

I loved the earlier seasons, as it was Family Guy the way it was meant to be... Offensive, disgusting, crude, you name it. This show has taken a step away from that, and that was the very thing I loved about the show.

Don't get me wrong, there a couple good episodes in the newer seasons, such as 'Road to Multiverse', or 'Back to the Pilot', but I wish the newer seasons were more consistent in good content, such as the latter and/or the former.

As a Family Guy fan, I recommend only watching up to season 4. Anything past season 4 is where the quality takes a dive.

The first 4 seasons are pure comedy gold.

Regardless of the lackluster quality in newer seasons, my thoughts in seasons 1-4 are that the show is fantastic. It is the reason why I give this a show a watch, and a high rating. The characters are so crude, and humorous, that I remember almost losing my breath, since I would laugh so much.

The parts that 'kill' me, are when Peter would have flashbacks or made up thoughts in his head about prospects of his life... Pure genius.

If you are a person that wants to watch this, again, I would only watch up to the end of season 4. Past that is mostly irrelevant.

The Office (2005–2013)
3/10
I am curious what took them so long to put it down...
28 July 2014
Well, before if I even begin this review, if you get offended easily, I would stop reading this.

Anyway, to begin this honest review, I once saw this show on TV, and the ONLY reason why I saw it for the fist time, is because there was nothing else on, that I particularly liked. When I watched it, I only LOOKED, not watched, at the telly, for only 10 minutes, before I shut it off.

The show's humour is so bleak, and has no depth to it. That is one of the things that I look for in a sitcom.

People say it is a 'dry humour', when it is NOT. I know dry humour, and I find it humorous. I found Napoleon Dynamite absolutely hilarious, and that movie is the epitome of dry humour.

The the times that I LEGITIMATELY laughed, I could count on one of my hands, and I watched up to the end of season 3. I think the humour is relative, and that is OK. I understand, if someone finds a show, based around shallow characters, doing what a 4 year old with special needs, would do in an office setting, funny, then hats off to you! I don't, and I may never develop a sense of humour for it.

The problem, is that the show is incredibly underwhelming, as it is relative someone trying to tell a joke, while bursting out laughing, just before telling the punchline. That is how painful it is just to keep interest, after watching it for 5 minutes, let alone broadcasting 9 seasons of this... I guess that is how long it took them to realize how boring the show is.

Though, out of fairness, the only character I find remotely humorous, is Stanley. Too bad they didn't showcase him enough throughout the series. He would be the only reason why I would watch the show.

Anyway, the show is boring. I may develop a sense of humour for it in the distant future, but as it stands right now, it is one of the dullest shows to ever be shown on national television.

EDIT: I managed to give the UK version a chance, and I think it far surpasses this overrated, over-glorified, bastardized version of the original.

Seinfeld (1989–1998)

Why wasn't I born earlier???
28 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Well, as a person who was born during this show's original run, I never got to experience this spectacle of a show.

When I first watched it, I never understood it, nor did I find it funny. Many people I knew raved about it, and talked about funny moments about the show, particularly the Soup Nazi episode.

I went on to see the Soup Nazi episode, and I was hooked to the show ever since.

The chemistry between Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Jason Alexander), Jerry (Seinfeld, himself), and Kramer (Michael Richards) is absolutely perfect.

Now that I am older, and that I do understand sexual jokes, of which this show is LITTERED with them, I think it is better than a good chunk of sitcoms of today. It only goes to show that this show has never lost its charm, to its fans, like myself.

The biggest reason by far, of why I love the show, is because of George (Alexander). I found his bouts of expressive anger/irritability, absolutely hilarious.

I personally felt that Alexander was the unsung hero of the show, as Richards, had been awarded many awards, regarding his acting, meanwhile Alexander was awarded none.

Too bad this show is now in syndication, and no longer in its original run. At least they left on a high note (LOL George Costanza)! The ending of the series was when the 4 of them were incarcerated, as they broke a 'Good Samaritan' law, when they taped a guy getting robbed/mugged. At least there is no uncertainty to the ending, especially to inquisitive people, such as myself!

Anyway, I love this show's use of observational humour, as the writing is some of the sharpest, I have ever seen, and it has been over 15 years since!

This show has aged very well, to put it bluntly. No wonder why it is considered one of the most watched shows of all time!
