The Book of Clarence (2023)
Captivating!
Without and doubt lovers of movies have seen a new wave of thought provoking films in recent years as we enter a age of new. New vision, new thoughts about the past and the way we see ourselves through film. The Book of Clarence is one of those films. I truly enjoy this film. A twist on a story long told through the eyes of the usual suspects. The acting was second to none, the story itself told in a way only one denied the opportunity to tell it from a different perspectives. This film shows us what we have missed out on and what is to come in the future. I'll be adding this film to my collection and I highly recommend this film it's a keeper!
Catch the Fair One (2021)
Love it.
The word intense doesn't start to describe this film as we get a brief but telling look into the world of sex trafficking and the hardship it causes when a love one goes missing. The story was gripping throughout the movie. The acting was great the characters interesting. Even the the setting for the movie was great. Kali Reis did a terrific job she was on point in every scene very believable. This movie was more than a cut above previous movies I have seen surrounding the subject of sex trafficking. I would say for some the movie might be a tad too much but if you love movies this is a movie you must watch. I highly recommend Catch the Fair One.
Surrounded (2023)
Great Western Great Film...
It took me a minute to finally get around to watching this movie. I really didn't know what to expect coming off of viewing what I thought was a pretty good western called 'The Harder They Fall'. But I finally got around to reading some reviews, which I often do when I am torn or lazy about viewing a film I am unsure about taking the time to watch. Once I sat down and began to watch Surrounded, I was consumed by it. The storyline, the magnificent settings, and the acting were great across the board. I thought it was a couple of sentences that had some flaws, but hey, every character or person doesn't react the same when under pressure. But overall, this was an excellent film. I can't say enough about the lead and the supporting actors; they both were outstanding.
The Aeronauts (2019)
Impressive Movie
Despite historical differences I have to say this was one of the most intense movies I've had the pleasure to see in a while. The story-line was excellent and well put together it held my attention throughout the movie. The two leads were both outstanding with Felicity Jones given a top notch performance and as always Eddie Redmayne is solid as they come both leads were outstanding. I choose to look at this movie for pure entertainment purposes only and this movie comes in high on my list as a must see.
High Flying Bird (2019)
Insightful Without the Hollywood Fluff.
Going into the movie High Flying Bird I didn't know what to expect beyond what I found to be an attention grabbing trailer which prompted me to take a look and I have to say I wasn't disappointment. The movie gave a behind the scenes look into the world of sports agents that we rarely have the opportunity to see in film when it comes to African Americans The acting was second to none in fact excellent, the lead character played by André Holland gave a convincing standout performance as sports agent Ray Burke. His side kick Sam, played by the beautiful and talented Zazie Beetz was right on point. Bill Duke as always was on top of his game as the wise and hard demanding Spencer. The supporting cast was excellent. The story was both interesting, informative and held my attention. I have to admit the story left me wanting more, in fact not knowing High Flying Bird was a movie I checked at the end to see if it was a original series only to find it was a movie. Overall I highly recommend this movie for anyone interested in taking a look into the sports world from the perspective of those who dominate the game.
Skyscraper (2018)
Watchable...but Disappointing.
Just watch Dewayne Johnson's newest flick Skyscraper which I found watchable but disappointing. A lack of character development and a story line full of holes just didn't do it for me, it was as if they were making it up the story line as they were going along. I found acting to be solid but a mediocre script killed this movie for me. In some ways this film reminded of the old Godzilla like genre at times.
Mudbound (2017)
Excellent!
Let me start off by stating I was Luke-warm about possibly viewing this film due to what I felt was over-kill when it comes to films of this genre. But after watching an interview about the picture on PBS, The Tavis Smiley Show with actor Jason Mitchell, who by the way was excellent in his role and the director I had a change of heart when she stated this was not another slave movie but a movie that takes place in the 40's in an era that hasn't been written about through films. So after exhausting myself preparing for Thanksgiving, I decided to watch the film and I have to say it did not disappoint, Mudbound has to be one of the best picturesI've seen this year. The acting was was outstanding, Jason Mitchell and Garrett Hedlund carried the film the supporting actors were excellent and the story was original, touching, relatable and thought- provoking. Carey Mulligan and Mary J.Blige were solid, just a well put together film. The backdrop for the film was breathtaking just a very good picture Rob Morgan was great in his role and I would highly recommend this movie. Mudbound has to be one the best pictures of the year!
The Defenders (2017)
The Defenders
I never been a comic book reader ever, but I have to say I have enjoyed the Marvel series and movies Iv'e seen. Not knowing what to expect I found the Defenders to be more than enjoyable. The acting was spot on, the supporting cast was second to none. The story at least from my perspective was solid, like I stated earlier I have no prior knowledge through comics about any of these characters beyond viewing Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and The Iron Fist on Netflix in fact this was my first time ever seeing or hearing about the Daredevil. Without giving plots or spoilers away I enjoyed how they incorporated the characters from previous series and although it took a minute to get up a running the wait was well worth it. The Defenders was on point and I look forward to future story lines.
Get Out (2017)
A Very Pleasant Surprise Indeed!
Finally, after hearing all the talk and reading tons of reviews, my wife and I set out to see Get Out. Neither one of us despite being very big movie fans consider ourselves to be lovers of horror films but I must say that we were both pleasantly surprised by Jordan Peele's first movie out of the gate. The story itself was solid and suspenseful the acting was second to none and despite being just a tad long in laying the initial groundwork when the characters initially arrive at the parent's home the story pulled together in a very timely fashion. The supporting cast was great and the interjection of comic relief was timely and funny. The horror moments were just that horrific. The story line kept me guessing just long enough to figure what nefarious deeds were happening behind the scenes. The social message and the intertwining within the story itself were illuminative and gave way to a deeper meaning. Hands down Get Out did not disappoint and delivered in a way I have not seen when it comes to horror films and that's saying a lot from someone who doesn't consider himself a horror fan. The film is a must see if you love movies period and I'll be adding Get Out to my collection of Blu- rays. Nine stars indeed and my wife and I look forward to seeing what Mr. Peele has in the pipeline for our future entertainment.
