Incredibles 2 (2018)
Not as good as the first one
It seemed to drag quite a bit. Not sure what the point was of domesticating Mr. Incredible so much, except to show that men have a tougher time than women parenting? The sound seemed lacking compared to the first one. What is it with Disney and their emasculation of the sound of their video releases?
The Brain from Planet Arous (1957)
Pretty silly stuff
Who knew a brain without a body would be so into the pleasures of the flesh? That's one villain. The lead actress is quite a cutie, and the brain sure wanted to take advantage of his opportunity once he had a body. Agar is serviceable in his role as the possessed scientist. The inflated prop brains look silly. One of the plot elements that I found particularly annoying was the way the Val character acted. He boasted that he had greater powers than Gor, yet he did NOTHING to stop him. He passively watched developments from the body of a dog, then quietly skulked away after the defeat of the bad guy, making the woman he said he was going to help look like a delusional moron.
The Giant Claw (1957)
Taking bad science to a new level of ludicrousness
Everyone knows the science in giant monster movies is bad, but this movie takes it to a completely unnecessary level of absurdity. Let's see...a giant bird flaps its wings to travel through the vacuum of space, the absence of anything to push against be damned. It travels millions of light years, despite the fact that at the speed shown in the film, it would take TRILLIONS of years to do so. It has an "antimatter shield", which miraculously doesn't self destruct because of contact with either the bird or the air.
Add to all that an utterly laughable, silly, unconvincing monster puppet with a goofy face that is second to none in its "can't take this seriously" awfulness, and you have one really bad movie.
The Maze (1953)
Disappointing
I respect William Cameron Menzies for his work on Gone With The Wind and Invaders From Mars, but this movie fell flat. The castle sets look dull and uninteresting, nowhere near the level of, say, the sets in the Universal horror classics from the 30s and 40s. The title implies that "the Maze" is integral to the plot. It isn't. Substitute ANY hidden area or locked room and the plot doesn't change at all. I was also annoyed at the "Gerald ages 20 years" aspect. We are never told WHY. One might have inferred that the Maze had some mystical property that caused the aging, but once again, the Maze comes up as a nonessential prop.
When the big mystery is revealed, it looks laughably silly. I give this four stars mainly because of the beauty and style of Veronica Hurst, who comes across as an English version of Grace Kelly.
