Fantastic!
18 January 2022
I liked this film so much, I watched the first 11 minutes 5 times before I saw the rest. Outstanding on location cinematography, soundtrack, the works. A nearly flawless movie.

Woefully Bad!
22 October 2021
What a poldnif garbage. Except for very good location filming in NYC, this is a total waste of time. The local police shoot people in the back, open their maiil, etc. Of course, they never have a warrant. A dumb, dim-witted film.

Absolutely Brilliant

I saw this film when it opened in 1992 at Angelika Theatre in NYC. Rows of people (mostly female) walked out, but it blew me away. Keitel gives a tour de force performance rivaled by few. I went back 3 days in a row bringing everyone I could find. If you have ever lived in NYC, it's a very personal film. In fact, much of it was filmed very close to my office in what was then "Alphabet City" (now the East Village). A must see great film.

Mediocre Friedkin

On the upside, this is a stylish film. It's also very underwhelming, and totally predictable. Skip it and watch "To Live and Die In L. A." (1985) instead.

Overrated

I like ambiguity in film. Unfortunately, despite the excellent casting, music, composition and cinematography, the visual narration is over the top. In the end, I am underwhelmed.

Mediocre and Predictable

Good story, but poor storytelling. The cast is strong, but I knew what would happen 10 minutes after the start. Obvious elements add up to poor filmmaking.

Warning: Spoilers
I love this film. I learned a lot listening to director Wim Wender on the DVD commentary. Ry Cooder's score of "Dark Was The Night" (1928) by Blind Willie Johnson is perfect. With everything filmed on location, the final scenes in the peep show and hotel are perfect. A must see.

Very Good; However...
9 July 2021
This is quite a good film. Well cast and directed, but (unfortunately) it doesn't compare to the original Swedish film (trilogy). There is too much verbal exposition (which dumbs down most films). One thing I cannot stand is when people write "this version is closer to the book" (than the other version). Who cares? Cinema is a different form of art: The key is adaptation. Noomi Rapace gives a tour de force performance in the original film, so absolutely watch it Swedish. Afterwards (if you like), watch the "Americanized" version.

I adore this film. It is superb storytelling, and has an ideal cast. Noomi Rapace gives a tour de force performance. A must-see trilogy. Far better than the American version (as is typical).

A Subpar Ripoff of
30 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You can thank Robert Cooper for being the most unoriginal writer/director involved with this series. He unashamedly uses multiple scenes from well known movies, and TV shows. This just goes to show it's not what you know, but who you know. Here is yet another example of someone with too much money and not enough talent. Skip this trash. Shame on you Cooper. I'll give you a tip: Write something original.

I like seeing Cary Grant, John Garfield and Alan Hale. Also, John Forsythe in his first credited film role. Unfortunately, the rest of this is trash. Skip this garbage.

I Knew Randy Webster
28 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's true. We were both born in Shreveport, LA. I saw Randy coming out of a liquor store in Shreveport on a Friday evening. We said hi to each other. The next thing I knew, I heard he was dead; murdered by the Houston police. His father spent a lot of money trying to prove this. No cops did any time. This country is only getting worse.,

Cheesy Post WWII "Red Threat"

Warning: Spoilers
This is woeful pablum. The near constant stern-sounding voice over describing the supremacy of the FBI agents is laughable. There is no mystery whatsoever. Pure garbage. Skip this propaganda masquerading as "film noir".

Dumb, Predictable, and Really Stupid

This is really dumb. Btw, I guarantee that Mickey Rourke has it in his contract that he must be shown with his shirt off, which makes it even worse. Skip this garbage.

Heat (1995)

Terrific Film
21 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
(June 21, 2021). I saw "Heat" when it was released (1995) in a packed theater in Times Square, NYC. One of my favorite parts is the sound of the post-bank robbery shootout. This is absolutely stunning (and should've been awarded an Oscar). Much has been made of the robber's tactical movements. As terrific as these are, there is a better example in Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" (1987): The Steadicam shots of the squad advancing into the (bombed out) city of Hue is a supreme example of a "how to". I would lay odds Mann was inspired by this techinque. My only negative criticism is during the much referenced scene of McCauley and Hanna having coffee in the diner. If you watch closely, you can see Pacino break character by cracking a small smile (in the wrong place). Please note: As mentioned in the director commentary, this scene was not rehearsed. Regardless, "Heat' is a superb film I have seen many times.

The Brave One (2007)

Very Good
15 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
(June 15, 2021) I saw this film in 2007, when it was released. Neal Jordan is an outstanding director, the screenplay is very good and the lead roles are played brilliantly by Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard. The supporting cast is very strong (Mary Steenbergen is great). There are nuances Ms. Foster brings to her "Erica Bain" character. Lastly, the location scouts did a terrific job of finding many areas people aren't familiar with (especially New York City dwellers). All of this is what separates "The Brave One" from the glut of dopey "revenge" movies. My only problem with the film is the ending: Tied up a little too neatly for me. I own the BluRay copy which contains many details (like location scouting). I lived in SoHo and worked in Manhattan (from the 1980s to 2016). Consequently, I know most of NYC (especially Manhattan) like the back of my hand. Unfortunately, little did I know this film would become all too similar to my own life: My wife, father, brother, sister, mother and business partner all died (in that order) in a very short span. I can really identify with her character. Most of all, I know "the hole you can't fill" and how "you become someone else". Anyway, this is a must see film.

Good, However
13 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
(June 12, 2021). I like this film; however, there's some casting Issues. Matt Damon is terrific. Unfortunately, I thought Angelina Jolie never was believeable as his wife. I also had a big problem with Bill Crudup. I never believe he is British. Both Jolie & Crudup are terrific actors but miscast. Michael Fassbender would have been much better. I guess he wasn't available. Still, this is worth watching, even though it runs long.

Suspect (1987)

Good Courtroom Thriller
11 June 2021
Peter Yates directed "Suspect". Yates is probably best known for "Bullitt" (1968), starring Steve McQueen (who produced as well) with the unique incredible car chase scene filmed in downtown San Francisco and nearby. They reached speeds of 124mph. Already a star, "Bullitt" catapulted Steve McQueen into worldwide stratospheric superstar status. Anyway, "Suspect" has a terrific cast: Besides Cher, Liam Neeson and Dennis Quaid have gone on to have stellar careers. However, there are many outstanding character actors, like Bill Cobb and Michael Beach (who was virtually unknown then). This is a good film and worth watching. However, a great courtroom drama was made 5 years prior: "The Verdict" (1982) starring Paul Newman and James Mason. That is my favorite courtroom and justice-based film.

Mediocre at Best
11 June 2021
You never know who or where anyone is in this film. They think it's slick to show a lit if pyrotechnics and fast cutting. It is woeful storytelling. To see a master at work, watch Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" (1987). You always know where everyone is. That is a very hard thing to do in cinema.

Copycat Scene, But Decent
7 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
(June 7, 2021)The opening scene is a direct ripoff of Luc Besson's superb sci-fi action thriller The Fifth Element" (1997). Specifically, it is the opening scene in that film which the writer stole the scene from. Still, this is a decent episode and worth watching.
