The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Special (2020)
well choreographed - very satrical dialogue (don't watch with the children))
The choreography is excellent and complicated. The dialogue/songs are raunchy, irreverent, fun, and often hit the spot re: traditions and how they can sometimes make people miserable at Christmas. There's no preaching nor finger pointing saying that keeping traditions is bad. It's just a fun way to remind people to enjoy the moment and not get wrapped up in feeling like they 'have' to do things just because it's ALWAYS been done - even if they don't want to do it any more. (tradition!).
Lest this sound like a depressing and preachy film, it absolutely isn't! It's simply fun and, even better, it's got a happy ending! Great Christmas film to watch early in the season!
Cursed Friends (2022)
A good film when you just want a diversion
It's not a great film, but if you want a campy, fast paced 'get away' film then it fits the bill. Many of the characters are outrageous stereotypes (villains, heroes, gays), but it's not offensive at all. It's just silly humour (it's not really horror at all). The pace is a little too frantic throughout without any slowing down, which is a distraction. But it obviously wasn't intended to be anything other than ridiculous low brow humour.
It's also somewhat generational, as someone mentioned. The multiple references using some aspects of social media presented as jokes sometimes left us shaking our heads and going "What are they meaning?" But in the end, who cares?
Einstein on the Beach (2014)
It's like Noh theater without the lavish costumes
First off, I love Phillip Glass' music and have listened to him for years. Two of my favourite Glass pieces are from Einstein on the Beach (the opera debut was in 1976).
But it's... long! 4.5 hours non stop minimalist music and acting.
Phillip Glass said "It's a story that you have to create for yourself. We don't give you a plot; we give you a theme. And the audience completes the story." As a story, this opera's a lengthy tome!
It's a delightful opera to look at if one only views a few of the acts at a time (called 'knees' in the opera). My low rating is because it simply is too long a production. Trying to sit through the entire 4.5 hours at once is as enjoyable as undergoing a frontal lobotomy.
Ghosts of the Ozarks (2021)
not a horror genre, more a suspence fantasy
This could have been so much better if classified as 'suspense' and not 'horror' - which it isn't. Expecting a 'horror' genre led us to keep thinking, as we were watching, "When will the horror part start?". It never did.
Excellent acting, good filming, interesting plot. But trying to market this as a horror genre will disappoint many people, and put off an audience who would otherwise enjoy a suspense genre. Hence many negative reviews. Which is a shame for such a well acted film.
The Curse of La Patasola (2022)
not bad for a budget film, but really not good either
The filming is rather well done, considering the budget constraints. The actors are fine in their performances. The characters somewhat interesting. Unfortunately the plot quickly unfolds into an illogical mess and becomes absurd towards the end. And the ending is one of those completely irrational endings which seems completely unrelated to what was happening in the movie.
Good for those times one is completely bored and would rather watch a movie than watching the paint drying. And about as satisfying.
Heisser Sex in Bangkok (1975)
70's porn flick, mislabled as a comedy
This is a German porn flick, dubbed in English. The plot's simple - a bunch of 'American' guys go to Bangkok on a sex junket. The dialogue tries to make light of their 'escapades', but it's really only a porn film. The dialogue is somewhat disturbing, given that the actors view the Bangkok hookers only as 'meat' whom they will satisfy. Dated and sad, especially as it was filmed in Bangkok using local 'talent'.
