Vacancy (2007)
The Makers Trust Your Intelligence
They don't make you feel stupid, they give you something that seems real. There isn't any sugar coating, no senseless nudity, just a claustrophobic atmosphere and tense build up that will have you on the edge of your seat, anxious to see what will happen next. It's the way a movie should be done, and makes for a satisfying late fright night.
A thrilling horror shocker that follows a quarreling married couple, David and Amy Fox (Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale) that end up breaking down in the middle of nowhere and have to walk a few miles to a gas station/motel. The strange and creepy manager gives them the "honeymoon suite." The room is, of course, the worst motel room you will ever see, cockroaches, no TV channels come in, etc. With nothing to do, David begins watching the videotapes(snuff films) in the room. They both begin to discover that the films are real and were filmed in their room. They find themselves in a life or death situation and try everything possible to survive the night. If you liked the trailer and the synopsis or any of the actors, you will definitely find that you like this movie. When I first saw a trailer for the movie, I thought it looked good, but was a little hesitant because of the way that horror movies are made today (gore and bore). This film has a very good plot and is solid in structure. Even though you do not get the full back story of the characters, you get their painful story through the excellent writing. In the beginning, you don't quite get why they fight or seem to "hate" each other, but it doesn't take long to understand (maybe 15 minutes counting the beginning montage of credits). I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout almost the entire film, and found not one dull moment. Suspense and tension are the real deal in this movie, and it is done incredibly well. Lots of excellent camera angles and authentic startling sequences add to the tense nature of the film. The characters seem very genuine and real, the relationship between the main two characters is portrayed extremely well. Wilson and Beckinsale come off as a real couple with a history. Their acting is extremely believable, and the writing of the characters is done extremely well. Another great thing is that they aren't your typical brainless genre characters who get naked and drop to the floor when the killer approaches, they are much more real. They do everything that you expect that you would do if you were in their situation. They make good decisions, which make them much more realistic, winning sympathy rather easily. There are heart-pumping fight sequences, which were well executed and will make you cross your fingers for Beckinsale and Wilson. There are also tender moments that will add to your root for them. By the end you will want them to stick it to that manager for everything he's done and for a reconciliation between the two main characters. I enjoyed it ten fold, but you'll have to watch it to see whether they make it in the end.
Overall, Vacancy is an original psychological thriller that is heavy on suspense, while not so heavy on bloodshed.
The movie does contain a far amount of vulgar language. I would recommend this movie. Your missing out if you don't see it.
Click (2006)
Everyone Should Go See It
Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, and Christopher Walken are excellent in this movie. Click is the summer's best comedy. Other than the acting the storyline is amazing. The effects are cool and well made. I can't complain about anything in this movie. It was GOLD!! If this movie isn't number one than America doesn't know a good movie when they see one. Everyone should go see this movie and experience it. It has a good message and an excellent delivery of it. I will be buying it when it comes out on DVD and so should you. If anyone wants to know more about it than you can PM me for the information. Don't listen to the message boards when they say that this movie doesn't look good, Adam Sandler is a sell out and anything else they are saying. Those are personal beliefs and I have actually seen the movie and have the cold hard facts. It isn't like Adam's other movies, but it is still a comedy and there still are hints of his old jokes. You'll see what I am talking about when you go see it.
Speak (2004)
Best Movie Ever
Elizabeth Perkins and D.B. Sweeney both gave very believable performances as the Sordinos. Eric Lively was great. Kristen Stewart really shone. She really showed, in this role, that she is a great actress. I was not a fan of hers until I saw her in this movie. When you see it you will understand why. I was left in awe of the movies emotion and story. The directing, writing, acting, and editing are all top-notch. The movie is really under noticed and should be on everyone's to see list. It is a great adaptation of the book, which is also a great read. The movie is about a girl who was raped at a summer party and enters high school, while living with this she tells no one and realizes as the film goes on that it happened and she has to face it. The movie is mostly narrative, but it is actually done correct and delivered great. If you haven't seen this movie and you are thinking about seeing it you will have to buy it, because it was a labeled as a TV movie. I saw it the one weekend that it was on Lifetime, but it also showed on Showtime. High school students will really connect to the things that happen in the school and the humor is really great to teenagers. Parents will love the emotion and quality of the film. It sends a great message and is amazing in its delivery. It is a tragedy, but in the end everything is alright. This is a good film families could watch together, as long as children are, I would say over 13. If you are a parent and want to talk to your kids about things that they might face and you don't know how, watching this movie with them might help. It includes partying and drinking and a sexual assault. It is a good idea to tell your children to watch themselves and make wise decisions. The film really shows that. In conclusion, this film was the greatest movie ever. It had top-notch directing, acting, filming, editing, writing, scenery, etc. I would recommend this movie 10 fold to everyone.
Undertow (2004)
Writing was the Problem
After watching this movie I have come to the conclusion that the movie would have been good had the writers known what they were doing. I didn't understand whether Chris Munn died at the end or not until I watched the deleted scenes. The acting in the movie was top notch compared to what they were expected to do by the writers. Many of the movies scenes struck me as very strange and the dialogue was horrible. Josh Lucas was great and so was Dermot Mulroney. Jamie Bell was good and so was Kristen Stewart for her minimal role. Fight scenes were good, however a couple were choreographed badly. All I can say is the movie had potential.
Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005)
Better than Jumanji
Zathura is an amazing scifi children's movie. Adults will have a lot of fun at this movie too. Tim Robbins plays a wonderful and believable dad. The main characters, Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo are extremely good as the two brothers. Kristen Stewart(sister) and Dax Shepard(astronaut) play funny and lovable characters. I give Robbins a 9 and Hutcherson, Bobo, Stewart, and Shepard 10s. This movie will have you laughing all the way home. Jumanji is nothing compared to this one. The only thing they have in common is they both contain a board game. I am 16 years old and went to see it, I have no younger sibling and I loved it. I would recommend this movie to everyone, of all ages.
