The Artful Dodger (2023)
"Twisting Classics: A Fresh Yet Unbalanced Take in 'Artful Dodger'"
"Artful Dodger," a recent TV adaptation in Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" universe, impresses, especially for those new to the original novel. The series adeptly explores the complex relationships among characters like Fagin, Oliver Twist, and Jack Dawkins (the Artful Dodger), providing an accessible introduction to Dickens' classic world.
However, there's a clear imbalance in narrative focus. While the main characters receive thorough development, showcasing rich backstories and personalities, the side characters are neglected, remaining underdeveloped despite their potential.
The shallowness in portraying secondary characters like Frances 'Red' Scrubbs is apparent in key story arcs. Moments like Red's cesarean or her revenge on Captain Lucien Gaines lack emotional impact, feeling shallow due to insufficient character development.
The main characters, however, truly shine. Maia Mitchel's Lady Belle Fox and Thomas Brodie-Sangster's Dr. Jack Dawkins form a compelling duo. Their relationship is so captivating that it keeps you on the edge of your seat, especially in high-stakes moments.
The series also delves into medical drama in 1920s Australia, primarily to add tension. Unlike other medical shows, it uses minimal jargon, making it easier to follow. Arguably, it's more about thieves than surgeons, with the most compelling plot points revolving around the former.
In conclusion, "Artful Dodger" excels in introducing "Oliver Twist" to new audiences but falls short in realizing its ensemble's potential. The focus on primary characters, effective as it is, leaves side characters unexplored. A more balanced character development in future could deepen the series' appeal, transforming it from a mere retelling to a thorough exploration of Dickens' world. My rating: 7/10.
The Man Who Fell to Earth: The Man Who Sold the World (2022)
Good ending to a good series.
Good show.
Few things keep it from being scored higher.
1. "Romantic" Love between Justin Falls and Faraday feels out of left field.
2. The religiousity of its science-minded characters.
3. Eddie Flood's son's arc. I don't even remember his character's name.
Other than that, it was an enjoyable watch. This and ST Strange New Worlds have improved my opinion of Alex Kurtzman. Perhaps I can now forgive him for Discovery and Picard...perhaps.
