Average film. Great story
29 October 2014
The enthusiasm for this film and motivation to continue watching is slightly destroyed by the lack of flow. There are some excellent moments but they are scattered throughout the film. Main character (John Martin) is on a ride to the small town of Rainbow Valley, he meets George who is looking for water. George is provided water and subsequently given a ride to a car! Later on there is an incident which involves highwaymen who have set up an ambush. Martin is was on the on the same road as George and follows to assist... From this point the film slightly drops in quality. The movie holds so much promise at the beginning but then tends to ride a little slow throughout. It is as if the films starting sequence and ending sequences were all meticulously constructed, only for the film to be let down by the middle portion.

1933 film

The film has a wonderful plot with an exceptionally clever twist where john Wayne's character manages to secure the trust of the towns dark entrepreneur. The theme is almost a superhero comic style composition where the bad guy stops at nothing to protect his wealth, status and greed at the detriment to the town people. All in all this is not a bad film although some of the acting from the supporting cast is a little outdated and poor in contrast to what is presented by the main cast. When watching this film it is quite clear that this is a 1930s film so please do not expect the modern style of production. You should watch this film for what it is, appreciate its ability to stand the test of time and marvel at the chance of watching a less than popular film staring John Wayne.

Excellent film.

Warning: Spoilers
This film has not aged like some films of this genre from the 1930s. The plot to this films would give many modern western plot developers a run for their money. Would advise that this film should be watched when you have the odd hour to spare and are interested in watching a john Wayne classic. The plot is based around John Brant who has been sentenced for a murder he did not commit. After a wonderful chase scene introduction John Brant meets up with "Jones".

Looking at this film I have now observed two versions. Once version contains a rather overdubbed and irritating slapstick music during the egg scene. Luckily the version that I have rated 8/10 contains no slapstick music and can be found on the internet.
