Requiem for a Dream (2000)
One line review: Simply the greatest movie you'll never want to watch a second time. Very minor spoiler.
If they had premiered this movie near a cliff or a construction site, they'd have needed to hire security to keep people from jumping after leaving.
My wife spent three days in bed after we saw it on a Friday night.
I love Jennifer Connelly to death. Now the line "Can you come home... today?" is forever etched in my mind as the single saddest moment in my movie experience.
Apropos of nothing, this is a case where the book and movie are a perfect pair. Neither is better or more complete. That's a tribute both to Selby's power and concision and Aronofsky's mastery.
Despite the headline, I've watched the movie several times. Erin Brockovich was a good movie, and Julia Roberts gave a worthy performance, but it paled next to Ellen Burstyn's portrayal of Sara Goldfarb's pathos and desperation. She'll rip out your heart and hand it to you still beating.
The Sector (2016)
This movie is what I like about Indies
As an independent film, the Sector is pretty effective. It's a worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours, as long as your expectations are set appropriately.
I'm not expecting great direction or editing, which means the story line might be confusing, or the ending might kinda drag out. This movie is no exception.
But it's the earnestness of the whole thing that makes it worthwhile. The story works, and any veteran of Sci Fi willing to add their own experience to the story can fill the gaps in believability.
And given how many good actors fall out of favor and kinda slide into obscurity, I gotta hand it to Lance Henriksen for keeping busy and being the big fish in a small pond.
The only reason I ticked the spoiler box was to say this movie seems to be setting up a sequel. If there is one, I'll definitely be watching.
