I wish this movie was erased from my memory...

A dull "All Inclusive" (if you know what I mean) wanna be slasher-horror-comedy, which isn't gory, scary or comic, so that left us with a lame script that stole the premise from a Christmas classic and turned it into a boring, forgettable and horrid Halloween/Christmas crossover.

Also if you have a brain, you know exactly what would happen as the movie goes by, which is even worst in horror movies because it blows off all the emotion.

Also, the amount of LGBT characters is over the top, I mean, we get it, it's a thing this years of inclusion but, you know, chill out a bit...

Anyway, don't waste your time on this, mark my words: UNGORY, UNSCARY AND UNFUNNY.

Dumb Money (2023)
9/10
The Antisocial Network
27 October 2023
If "The Social Network", "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "The Big Short" were all mixed in a blender, "Dumb Money" would come out of it. What a pleasure is when the movie is as great as it's trailer.

Aware of this, the editing department was shrewd enough to add clips of Christian Bale playing the drums while screaming in "The Big Short", and the iconic scene of Matthew McConaughey humming while hitting his chest with his fist in "The Wolf of Wall Street".

The cherry on top: Dumb Money's script was adapted from Ben Mezrich's "The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees", the very same dude that wrote "The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal", which was adapted of course in David Fincher's masterpiece "The Social Network".

Although the comparisons with it's predecesors, Dumb Money has an identity of its own: a battle between The Little Guy and The Elite, depicted in a staggering way that you can feel the characters' emotions strongly real.

The mere idea of putting Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, Vincent D'Onofrio, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson in a movie together is compelling enough, add a true story script and a phenomenal soundtrack, and there you have it, one of the greatest films of the year, imo.

I do have two complains though: the first, and I don't say this often, in fact, very very rarely, that the movie should've last longer, or maybe I was too enjoyed that it just felt too short, I was craving for more!; the second: there are a few things regarding the financial context that didn't fully understood, maybe I was hoping for Margot Robbie, Anthony Bourdain, Richard Thaler & Selena Gomez to explain them to me? ("The Big Short" reference, in case you didn't get it).

The Flash (I) (2023)
9/10
The True Multiverse of Madness
17 June 2023
This is what one would actually expect by a title like that, this is what should be called: The Flash in the Multiverse of Madness, not that dull Doctor Strange movie which only had a few characters introduced to the multiverse.

In spite of not having a great script, The Flash is both funny and highly entertaining, and also a box after box of surprises that never crossed my mind to see in the movie.

The trailer looked great simply by seeing Michael Keaton's Batman was in it, I mean that was the best hook for us old schoolers (millenials if you will), buuuut all the other appearances and cameos, physical or digital, totally left me in awe.

No spoilers here, go and experience this madness of timelines by yourself, you'll love it specially if you are an 80's/90's kid/teenager.

Black Mirror: Loch Henry (2023)
Season 6, Episode 2
10/10
Astonishing!
16 June 2023
Black Mirror comes back with a so far up-to-the-hype season (just finished this second episode), and let me tell you, I felt the same chill in my heart and body that 'Shut Up and Dance' (S3E03) left me with.

The writers of BM may constantly rely on sci-fi for the scripts, but once in a while they go the other way, and leave thecnology as a minor element in the story, barely there, and when they do that, they score handsomely. This is one of those cases.

This is, without hesitation, one of the best plot twists I have ever seen, but it's so well written, that makes you think a few answers before it finally makes it's shocking entrance. Highly, highly recommended.

A Rushed Finale
29 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It was all going so well, till the last 20 minutes came... The writers just dropped a twist at the very end but didn't bothered to show us the aftermath, hence it feels rushed and lazy writing.

I personally think season 4 was not up to its predecessors, "Connor's Wedding" is rated 9.9? I mean, the fact that was possibly the less expected thing to happen in the show doesn't make it the greatest, I think Logan's death was the first and biggest mistake of a nosedive in the series script. Logan Roy was the whole deal, the heart of the story, you just don't go and cut him off to gain uncertainty and then finish a great show to a poor finale like this one.

What was Shiv thinking? "Oh, we don't know, just wanted to make a spicy twist, but we won't bother to show you what her relationship with Tom would be now"

I could go on and on with the tiny loose ends, but i'm too pissed to continue writing, like "Succession" writers were too short-minded and lazy to bring us an epic closure that we deserved, but we so didn't.

"The Room" of horror films, without all the fun...
29 January 2023
This is one of the worst films i've ever seen in my whole life... The directing, The acting, The script are just horrid. The "gore" is barely visible, The characters are literally actors wearing a mask, they didn't even bothered to make Winnie the Pooh or Piglet more accurate to a non-person, and neither they are scary. Don't waste your time on this Piece of sh**. It's a solid 0, but the 1 star is the lowest rate I can give at this site.

I just knew the director started making feature films in 2022, which also look as bad as Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey. And also filmed another one this year called "Firenado", let your imagination go wild...

Zombieland meets Stranger Things
14 April 2021
The only reason I watched this was for its nomination for best visual effects by the Academy Awards, though it is rather entertaining and enjoyable. Far from being a rather original story or a great film, Love and Monsters is that weekend movie you're aiming at.

Capone (2020)
8/10
Without Tom Hardy, it would've definitely sucked
18 May 2020
Writer/director Josh Trank weaved a unique narrative and tone to depict the not-golden-age of the greatest gangster America ever knew, which, let's face it, nobody until now dared to do, since the main attraction of such historic figure would be that of the action, the golden years, the gangsterish life style.

Needless to say, Tom Hardy's portrayal of dementia-ill 'Fonzo' is amazing, and what makes the film work. On the contrary, though Trank made a decent job writing and directing (and he obviously needs to mature on both), his job as editor proves he is less than qualified to do such task.

The other issue I found in this long-waited film was that some parts aren't clear whether are real or Capone's imagination, so the script failed in drawing the line between both sides.

The best horror movie I have ever seen
11 December 2019
One of the most powerful things in Marriage Story is how you go from a comedy scene to a drama avalanche, or how you draw an illusion at some points in the movie that later fades away.

The actings are simply incredible, for moments I hardly remembered Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver were actors, since they bring to life a real, tangible and credible tensions and feelings of a real marriage in decay.

Whether the script, the actings, the direction or the powerness is the best thing to praise, it'll certainly leave you crushed, surprised and satisfied. One of the best movies of the year.

The Irishman (2019)
10/10
¡Once Again, Hats Off to Mr. Scorsese!
28 November 2019
There is no way The Irishman would've worked without this epic of epicness formula: Scorsese+De Niro+Pacino, it's like a dream come true. Also, Harvey Keitel's part was incredible, though his short appearance in the film.

De Niro+Pacino was a blast specially the second time it happened, under the direction of great Michael Mann in his own remake that we all know and love "Heat" (1995), but The Irishman is ten levels above it, now under the wing of the one and only filmmaker that could make this film a piece of absolute art. In regards of "Righteous Kill" (2008), I abstain of making any comment whatsoever since I've never watched it, but I've heard nothing but awful reviews about it, but that won't stop me from watching it and make a judgement of my own.

About this long-waited movie, I loved every second of it, the performances, the narrative, the pace, the direction, the script, the music, the editing and the cinematography. The chemistry between De Niro and Pacino/De Niro and Pesci is the soul of The Irishman, getting us back to Scorsese's gangster masterpieces of the 90's.

Without hesitation, I baptise this as the best film of the year, ¿don't believe me? Stop reading reviews and go watch it. Almost 10 hours later, I'm still awed.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

Well, at least the Doctor is good, 'cause he put me to Sleep aye right
11 November 2019
Today... In our nefarious section of sequels that should've never existed: Doctor Sleep (thank you, Stephen King).

The most blatant fail in DS is the characters recreation with different actors, I mean, why ruin the purity of a masterpiece?

Director Mike Flanagan was at his peak with two amazing horror films (Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil), and a masterpiece mini-series (The Haunting of Hill House), but I don't quite blame him for this cringeworthy film, but Mr. King himself, for creating something nobody ever asked, that novel is the root of all this mess.

At 153 minutes long, the good doctor here will prescribe you boredom, uninteresting characters, dull script and a bad experience.

High Boring Flick
29 October 2019
I was about to turn this off after 15 minutes it started, but in a failed attempt to expect it to get better, it got worse.

Shot on an Iphone? So what? Is that supposed to be a measure to rate the greatness of a film? Hell no. Not only the story is mediocre, but is also confusing and never lands a climax, direction and acting are just about neutral, concluding, not a single one thing about High Flying Bird is worth your time.

Yesterday (III) (2019)

Missexecuted Concept.
5 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I honestly expected more, the trailer looked much more promising (like many other movies, most of them actually).

My big first problem with Yesterday was Lily James, I think she is a really annoying person and therefore, a huge miscast. My second problem and shocking surprise was the horrid Kate McKinnon... since she's always a terrible choice for a role, even in all the stupid comedies she makes, I was dissapointed that she was cast in a more serious movie and more in knowledge of who the director is, ¿what happened there Mr. Boyle?

But the main problem with this movie was the love element, it was so unoriginal, unrealistic and predictable, it totally ruined the film's soul.

Also, there's never a moral or a motivational message for the musicians, the dreamers or the viewers in general.

In the end, it seems like the plot was written on a napkin in a bar and then handled to a gen z team who developed the script, the production design, then raffled the director chair and a 'dude' won and directed it.

Btw, wth was the scene of 'John Lennon' for??

Alexandre Aja has brought us a survival thriller, gory and entertaining, I honestly think this is a pleasant surprise for this year, since the plot sounds boring and tedious but is not, it'll certainly entertain you, but don't expect a masterpiece either, it comes with its flaws.

The 8½ of our time, brought by a brilliant filmmaker.
19 August 2019
I. Short review:

Half autobiographic, half fiction, Almodóvar's most intimate work is an european drama carved with humor and intense emotions you wouldn't want to miss, Antonio Banderas is a tour de force.

II. Full review:

Since this year's Cannes Film Festival celebration in which Pain and Glory competed for the Palm d'Or for best picture and supposedly the favorite to win, I took quite interest in Almodóvar's new film, also my personal experiences with two of his films that I've seen, 'Talk to Her' (which I think is an absolute masterpiece), and the very creative thriller 'The Skin I Live In' (also starring Antonio Banderas), were strong factors of that interest.

The film tells the story of a depressed and aching director that reconnects with old friends and people he used to care about, at the time that he reflects on his humble but enlightning past in several ways, all from the perspective of his gloomy and lonesome present.

Pain and Glory escalates in a ladder of triumphs, since its mesmerizing soundtrack by Alberto Iglesias (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), an astonishing cinematography by José Luis Alcaine, a masterful direction and gripping script by Pedro Almodóvar, to its top and greatest gift of all: a colossal performance by Antonio Banderas, which justifies his award for best actor in Cannes 2019.

The Souvenir (2019)

The souvenir of The Souvenir is: A Dreadful Experience.
12 August 2019
A self-destructive relationship acted by a talentless Honor Swinton Byrne and a listless Tom Burke, is the detonator in this prosaic autobiography of writer/director Joanna Hogg (Based on her personal diary of her film student days in the 80's), which lurks in inane stillness, rather than in awe and poignancy.

This mosaic of ridiculously short scenes, close-ups of titles in a typewriter, political references, unanswered questions and the main character's unappealing film making shots, wakes a notion of the auteur's self-awareness of nostalgia, yet, for the misfortune of the audience, the film never actually unravels a vaguely sense of relevance, nor esthetically nor in the script.

¿You ever heard people say about a bad movie: "The only good thing about it was when it ended?, well, here ain't the occasion, nor even that. Non comfortable with torment us with The Souvenir, at the end of the credits announces "The Souvenir Part II"... Instead of writing a second script, I think Mrs. Hogg should write a public apology for this.

Action-Packed & Entertaining
3 August 2019
The spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise is just what this kind of monstrous blockbusters promises: a super action loaded production beyond any sense of reality whatsoever, so judge it based on this premise, in the end, it's all just for fun and entertainment for the people who only watch this movies as for the lovers of cinema just like myself that watch equally a good blockbuster at the movie theater, an art film from Hungary, a silly comedy on Netflix, or a classic horror film that I bought on blu-ray.

I love Dwayne Johnson's films, and this isn't one of his best works, but still, that man was born to make movies, which makes Hobbs & Shaw very watchable.

I wasn't so pleased with Deadpool 2, the so expected sequel that went under the direction of stuntman David Leitch (Specially known for his works as a stunt double and stunt coordinator, a few credits as second unit director, occasionally actor and since 2017, producer and director {has directed three films in a row since then: Atomic Blonde in 2017, Deadpool 2 in 2018 and Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw in 2019, and an uncredited direction in John Wick in 2014}), and I didn't enjoyed a bit that crappy female version of John Wick: Atomic Blonde, but when I knew he was in charge of this movie, I thought he could do better than his previous films, which in my opinion he did, though he still have a long way to go in regards of filmmaking.

So, to sum up, if you hate Fast and Furious films and take everything too serious, don't waste your money, because this is just another F&F, just without Vin Diesel in it. If you want to have a good time at the movies and you know well what to expect here, go nuts.

P.S.: There are two post-credits scenes in the early credits and one more till ALL the credits finalize.

Meh...
1 July 2019
The first song is just great, Thom Yorke's solo career is superb since that astonishing soundtrack he made for Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria; the second song's not as good as the first one, but is still good.

I didn't liked the choreography that much, the lights and effects were ok, and PTA's part? just as the headline says: meh, this one-reeler could've been directed for M. Night Shyamalan and no one would've known the difference.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

4th time's not a charm.
23 June 2019
Shame on Pixar, as a loyal Toy Story fan since I was just a kid in the 90's, who enjoyed the second part and who closed a perfect cycle with Toy Story 3 as a young man, now as a young adult who's hitting the 30's and still love animated films (specially the ones from Pixar), I can tell you how unnecessary and boring Toy Story 4 is.

They ruined a perfect trilogy for a huge bunch of dollars, instead of do it so with a brand new story.

I must say the Keegan-Michael Key & Jordan Peele characters were the best of the film, and the lack of these would've made TS4 just unbearable and utterly annoying.

Just a few laughs you can draw from this film and nothing more, those who belong to my generation (the 90's) knows perfectly that our love for this franchise ended in 2010 with the 3rd part, with a tear hanging in the eye, not in this forced 4th piece. Too bad for the real fans of this fantastic icon of our childhood.

Pet Sematary (2019)

Sucks even more than the one from 1989
9 April 2019
The latest adaptation from Stephen's King novel from the same name, 'Pet Sematary', is horrifying only in have to watch how horribly it is.

I'm a hard customer to satisfy in regards of supernatural horror films, and as expected before even enter the cinema, this won't be the one to shut my mouth and surprise me.

Jason Clarke and company were awful, I don't know if ~miscast~ is the right word because I can't imagine which actors could have fit in these roles, I can only say John Lithgow was OK but that's it.

I guess having two directors for such an ambitious film (All adaptations from any novel written by King are ambitious simply by his reputation) didn't achieved the greatness it seeked, since the direction also sucks big time.

It's not scary, at all, the actings are laughable (specially the girl), even the lame cover by The Ramones' song at the final credits is hideous... after watching Pet Sematary, you'll wish to be dead and buried in a cemetery for real.

Burning (2018)
9/10
A superb, unconventional thriller
27 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My first Lee Chang-dong's, "Burning", felt as a Hanekesque with a Lynchesque ¿twist?/ending. This masterpiece provides more questions than answers, and that is why I loved it so much, that intrigue and growing mystery filmed in beautiful pace.

Whether was all fantasy or not, we can't escape the great details in this film such as the cinematography, the script and the performances. My favorite part of the movie was Hae-mi's half naked dance in the sunset with jazz music in the background, it was just astonishing.

In the end, I was left with my questions unanswered, but it's quite interesting, I think, that the director makes you think, and think hard; to idealize your own explanation, and therefore, to get to the conclusion that you think is the best.

My own was that it's all just the novel Jong-su (if he is the writer writing about himself as mentioned in a part of the film) is writing. Near the end of the movie, he's briefly seen writing in a room that looks exactly as Hae-mi's, so that's what brought me to my belief.

Of course this is just a plain explanation, there are quite more elements to observe in the plot such as the meaning of set the greenhouses on fire (a metaphor for human purge perhaps?), the trial of Jong-su's father, the cat, Hae-mi's disappearance, and so on; All of this I can only imagine it and play in my mind with it, but it's quite difficult to put it into words so I won't make this an all written thought conclusion but a simple one. Only a thing I can be more certain about is that Ben and Hae-mi were just fictional characters that he created for his novel, or... in the beginning it was all true, in a timeline of reality: since Jong-su meets Hae-mi until her arrival from Africa and a not-well-received Ben, and since he feels jealous, he begins to write the novel with those people and he as the main characters, as a way to free his mind and ultimately kill Ben, at least in a fictionalized way. I don't know, the possibilities are infinite (alike Vanilla Sky, if you will), that's why Burning is a superb film, because it makes you reason it and enjoy the film at the same time.

Also, the score is awesome, particularly the music in the final credits.

In my *Best Films of 2018 Top Ten List*, I place Burning in spot #3.

23 March 2019
Critics hated it, I loved it. The Dirt might not be a profound biopic but certainly delivers to show us the fun side in the timeline of Mötley Crüe.

The narrative is dinamic but keeps a good rythm, I think the most important factor of The Dirt is that is a 90% faithful to reality, and that is a perfect reason to watch it and love it.

Not the average cop thriller
23 March 2019
Dragged Across Concrete may be an unorthodox thriller for many, but for me, those 156 minutes kept me at the edge of my seat.

The issue here might be that the climax unravels approaching the finale, but from there backwards is just great.

Don't expect the classic action movie just because Mel Gibson stars in it, nor the raw violence as seen in director S. Craig Zahler's predecessor film 'Brawl in Cell Block 99', which by the way was my second favorite film from 2017, D.A.C. has a style on its own.

This is a very fine thriller worth your time, just keep in mind that almost the whole film is just people talking, but rest assure you won't get bored a second.
