The Unnamable (1988)
Never forgotten this film, in 30 years!
The film isn't that good! But the creature, it's reveal, and all the creatures scenes left an indelible mark on me!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
I liked it
I didn't like 'The Force Awakens'
Some spoilers below.
I'd read several critics reviews and a lot of IMDB negative reviews. So recalibrated my level of expectancy. I wouldn't have watched the film, except I was invited to attend by a friend. So I went.
And I liked it. I didn't like the dreadnaught ship and the bombers scene. It didn't seem to work. And I don't much like how they keep putting big new space craft in these films without much explanation.
The opening humour between Poe and Hux was misjudged and there was a lot of humour, mostly, I think the humour worked. Some touches were too much. Like when Luke dusted off his shoulder in his final duel with Kylo.
Leia shouldn't have flown in space. I liked the Porgs, I'd like one. I liked the storyline where they went to the casino. I really liked the horses scene.
The telepathic connection between Rey and Kylo was dramatic. I can't get past Carrie Fishers plastic surgerised face.
It's funny how most of the male characters were portrayed as dumbasses and the women were all coming to the rescue.
The Samuri pretaurian guard dress was overdone. Kylo's killing of Snoke was well done, him deceiving Snoke by moving both lightsabers at the same time was good.
Did anybody else think this? The three leaders, General Hux, Supreme Leader Snoke And Kylo Ren all seemed to represent Donald Trump!!! Hux was a buffooon, with blond hair. Snoke in his bathrobe resembled a gross Hugh Hefner, paedophile type. And kylo Ren is a petulant child. All representing Trumps supposed buffoonery, sexual proclivity/indiscretion and his petulance!
The film seemed to have been written by card carrying democrats and all the Social Justice Warrior and political correctness stuff was laid on thick.
I thought daisy Ridley had piled on a few pounds since the last film and maybe wondered if the producers had actually asked her to put weight on? And I can't get past her cockney accent and some of her line delivery was quite poor. (Hopefully Kylo will kill her in the next film).
The planet Crait, red/white stuff was visually good.
I still don't get the slow chase through space plot. Some of the dialogue was clunky and overly expositional.
Well I'm only giving it 4/10. I enjoyed it a bit more than that. But for its faults I'm marking it down.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Not that good a film
MAJOR SPOILERS - BEWARE
I've just got back from the cinema after watching Alien Covenant. I didn't like it, I didn't think it was that good. Apart from the beginning which was just about OK, the ship, the crew waking up, fixing the ship. From when they landed on the planet it was all quite rushed right through to the ending. Non of the characters stood out. The neomorph birth and attack scene was well done, gruesome and frightening. The xenomorph effects are nearly all CGI. The editing is really poor, I could hardly tell what was going on in any of the action sequences. Except the neomorph birth and first attack scene. The birth of the xenomorph in my opinion is dreadful. They've speeded up the time from egg implantation to chest burster. I'm sad because I'm a life long Alien fan. Seen the first 2 films over 100 times. The films score is really poor. Nothing memorable in it except for a few bits lifted out of the first Alien film. It's a really messy film. I don't think it knows what it wants to be. It's just a hodgepodge of all the other films ideas. The end scene with David is very chilling. But what's the point when the whole film is a let down. All the other Alien films (except the 2nd Alien vs Predator film) are more coherent and enjoyable than this. And that's saying something. The ending is rubbish. THEY BLOW IT OUT OF THE BLOODY AIR LOCK AGAIN, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!! It has hardly any visual flair, which is a shame. Considering Ridley Scott directed it. Overall, I thought the film was dull, boring, a waste of talent and time. I even liked Prometheus more than this. In the end scene where did David get the things that come out of his mouth from? How did he make them? It's just, corny, rubbish, cheesy. The best way to describe my feelings about the film is that it has no SOUL.
Interstellar (2014)
Interstellar - a mess of a film.
I watched Interstellar on an IMAX screen, I found not one of the characters sympathetic. I didn't mind the science talk, some of the dialogue was clunky. I found Dr Brands revelation and Matt Damon's character's deceit chilling. The black guy on the space flight was interesting. The emergency docking scene was good. I didn't like the scene where Cooper is crying watching the videos of his children after being on the water planet, thought it was over the top. The score was interesting but overpowering, it was hard to hear the dialogue at times. I didn't like the first ending in the black hole. The second ending on the space stationy thing had a nice touch when Murphy told Cooper to go to Amelia Brand, there was a touch of forgiveness in that, encouraging her father to go be with the daughter of Dr Brand who deceived her. Finally, every time I think of the film my head hurts, I probably won't watch another Chris Nolan film as Inception really hurt my head when I thought about that after watching it too. Chris Nolan seems to have developed into an overbearing and heavy handed director, in Interstellar there is little grace and lightness of touch pervading what he puts up on the screen, basically I think Interstellar is a mess of a film, I did enjoy little parts of it, but that doesn't make it a satisfying film. So I'm only giving it 2/10.
Blue Jasmine (2013)
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant
I really enjoyed this film, I found it so funny and sad, so bittersweet! Such beautifully drawn characters, touching and heart breaking character interactions. The scene in the dentists, where the dentist comes on to Jasmine was more horrifying than many horror films I have long since watched and forgotten. Watching the film was like experiencing electricity, I felt so alive. Brilliant 10/10 if I was a gambling man I would have put a bet on Cate Blanchet winning the best actress Oscar, I just knew she would win. x. I like Woody Allen and have seen many of his films, I liked Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine, she did a very good American Accent, Alec Baldwin was good too, very smarmy. x
