The OA (2016)
The Curse of Netflix
All I can say about this show is that Ms Marlin and co produced something that before the end of the first episode had me hooked.
A fantastic idea, a great cast of relatively fresh faces and directed like a long established pro. I wish this show did not become a victim of the Netflix curse.
The origin story is something else and brings forth a young woman of many talents after suffering a loss no child should ever have to bear, while she still hold out hope that all her life is an elaborate ruse and that her loss is in fact a part of that part of the same.
If you want to watch something original and you have time to get hooked, well you've made a good start. I've only read a couple of reviews but am sure, as you are here, you'll love it too. Stop reading and strap in for a brilliant ride through time, space and the seriously brilliant writing of a pair of young talents.
3 Body Problem (2024)
3 Body Problem (Bug Problem Solved?)
As I start the second half of this opening season I am already wanting a second season airing date and I would like it soon @netflix.
This show is off the scale and if you like Sci-Fi, drama and mystery then this show is there for you to watch.
In an uncertain world we have a certain kind of certainty in that we have four basic seasons each year. But in a galaxy far far away, 400 years at ludicrous speed, things are a little different. They have the 3 Body Problem. To fix their issue they have a solution. Earth.
If you liked and were shocked that The Peripheral was cancelled after one season then you'll like this show. It brings that show back closer to our reality things we can see, feel but more importantly, we understand.
So if you like your Sci Fi then ignore the reviews from the Daily Mail and co for they know not what they are talking about even when it's cut and pasted from a real story.
This show is top shelf and with a script, cast and direction all spot on I. M. O.
Don't let us down again Netflix, you're not the BBC and so we can vent and cancel when we can't find show we like out of sight of a future.
Orphan Black: Echoes (2023)
How to top a great?
Well to answer my question I'd have said, simply, make it greater. And so in Orphan Black: Echoes that is exactly what they did.
Everything else I was going to say and more has already been said by others that gave this 10/10. So I'll simply say, read all off them to.
If you liked OB you are gonna love OBE. It's not got the same level of terror that comes to us in Orphan Black but you have a feeling it's not far away. But the show has links to and star from Orphan Black making an appearance.
But I trust this is the first of many seasons as it surely is a favourite of mine for 2023.
Don't miss it.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Millie Bobby Brown a face for many roles.
Little, (well growing up since Stranger Things started) has been a busy little woman who is proving to be a versatile actress. As mentioned Stranger Things where she is a lost soul with serious superhero powers. I next saw her taming dinosaurs and now this where her character does this narration and while not the same I remember another child actress, Dakota Fanning in a Steven Spielberg mini series, Taken, about alien abduction over the course of three generations where Dakota narrated throughout. As in the first Enola Holmes movie there is just the right amount of 'look to camera narration and facial stares.
As with my review of the first this is another great family night in movie for this winter. Again all the cast return, Calvin, Bonham Carter, Adeel Akhtar, Susan Wokoma and joining them for this round are actors like David Thewlis, Tim McMullan and Róisín Monaghan to name just a few. Holmes, Sherlock that is, has a returning nemesis in Moriarty and they've managed to tie in the Holmes we all know and have grown up with (sorry if you are a little younger than I) with the new, that of Ms Brown's Holmes.
I can't wait for No. 3, 4, 5 ......
With so many young actors and actresses these days going of the rail it's great to see those who keep their feet on the ground and take on roles that shows their depth of acting skills, Dakota and Millie. May they both return to our screen soon, well Millie better because I'm waiting for at least the third instalment of Elona Holmes.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Millie Bobby Brown the Quirky Stumbling Detective
Well I never. I completely missed this before the second one came out and so sought it out before watching part two and have to say that I wish I'd seen it sooner.
MBB in this gives me quite a few good laughs and in doing so is proving to be quite a versatile actress.
The story, script and cast are all spot on for this film for my liking anyway.
I love the way MBB turns to the camera to narrate every now and again. Really it's done just the right amount of times and in just the right places. There actually great also when it's just a facial expression narration. Great, love them.
I hope that this goes beyond the third film which I'm sure will be coming soon, no spoiler alerts, sorry.
A great family, popcorn, warm winter's night movie.
Calvin and Helena add great depth to the cast alongside Fiona Shaw and Copley to mention just a few.
So I've watched part two but guess you know what I'd write. So why are you reading this? Get the popcorn and throw a log on the fire (I know you only end up taking it back to the garden when the films over and you pop the heater back against the wall lol). Enjoy, I did.
Ghosts (2021)
Why why why
The UK version is off the scale and if America would just appreciate the history of the characters and then extend that to it's own version then it may have just been a bit better. But the actors also are, well, bad actors for their roles. The brits seem to just morph into their characters historical past and pull it off well. What the Americans do seems to fall back on stereotypical version of their characters history and the rest is as they say, history.
Want to watch a good program full of humour and whit called Ghost then watch the UK version.
Infinite (2021)
Assassin's Creed
This is like assassin's creed on steroids. From a dramatic car chase start this film goes on a non stop thrill ride around a premise that there are those born who have lived before. But some are fed up of living over and over and seek a prize that can end the cycle. One man, believing he was schizophrenic, lives with dreams of his past but not knowing them to be so. He knows of the location of the prize. But he'll only remember where it is when he remembers who he is. Traveling the world a team of his old compatriots try to wake him up before others can get to him. Treadway, must remember. Enjoy the ride.
Star Trek: Picard: Remembrance (2020)
Star Trek's Coldest Cold Opening Yet
As far as Star Trek openers are concerned this is by far the best opening yet. Loved every second of it and can't wait for the whole season to play through. The scenes look fantastic, the CGI realistic as usual for this SiFi series, the cast as ever is just spot on for each character thus far, Picard reviving his role as ever played by the very talented and skiiled actor, Patrick Stewart. What more could a Trekie ask for??? Ooohhh the next episode, ASAP.
My guess for the season finale is that the Borg are created in the Alpha Quad and I think actress, Isa Briones, as Dahj will end up being the Borg Queen,
Warcraft (2016)
Best game turn movie ever.
While I have never played the game, I can only judge this movie for being a good movie or not. And for me it's a resounding yes.
Great story, portrayed by a crop of good actors. Visual effects that are the right blend of real and CGI.
This title was changed to 'The Beginning' well it's simple there has to be a part two and I for one can't wait to see it.
Gamer or not, go see this film if fantasy, action and entertainment are your thing. If not then there is always TellyTubbies....
It's a shame that movies franchises like Lord of the Rings had set the bar at such a high height. This movie is another of those ancient land films with kings and queens, warriors employing the wizardry of their wizards to protect their land and population from a marauding enemy. But with a reduced budget what they've produced is a magical film that for me was entertaining, enchanting and captivating.
But like I said, I've never played the game and so maybe there are gamers that may see this differently, who knows. But give it a chances at least.
Wynonna Earp (2016)
A Touch of Jessica Jones And A Pinch of Sleepy Hollow Then Mix
Well I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the first episode. I saw a relatively known actress, completely unknown to me, Melanie Scrofano that just kept reminding me of Krysten Ritter in Jessica Jones (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2357547/?ref_=nv_sr_2). And then I felt as if I was in Sleepy Hollow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2647544/? ref_=nv_sr_1) land when it came to the mixture of a person of today fighting evil spirits of a bygone age, fuelled with the myth and lore Wyatt Earp. No reference to the Gunfight at the OK Coral is mentioned, as yet, nor the famous killing of the outlaw Doc Holliday and two other, but this is just the start and Tim Rozon's Doc Holliday is just warming up.
Wynonna returns to her birth town for the funeral of a relative after leaving some years before to escape the haunting of life she'd lived after killing her father in an attempt to actually save him from intruders, something we see in one of many flashbacks she has. Flashback seem like it will be used to give the program it's depth in time and to fill in the gaps of who she is and why she had left home in the first place.
Upon returning to her hometown, on her 27th birthday, for the funeral, Wynonna, realises that the demons that led to her being sectioned as a child are back to wreak havoc on the town once more. When she attempts to find information about the circumstances surrounding the death of her relative, Wynonna, comes across her sister who takes shots at her with a shotgun before realising who she's aiming at.
But the troubles want a gun, a famous gun used by her late grandfather, Wyatt, and the one that is full of the magic she needs to protect herself and the town from the troubles about to ensue.
But she has an ally, one who as a law enforcement officer, wants her one his team, the Black Watch, to tackle the troubles ahead. And so it begins. Melanie Scrofano plays a very good Wynonna, Shamier Anderson, who plays a very good Agent Dolls.
If you like Jessica Jones and or Sleepy Hollow then I think I can say you'll like this. And if you've not seen those two shows then I'd say try all three. Put the popcorn in the pan and get a cold drink and enjoy.
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (2016)
The Mannequin Shadowhunters
While I have not read the novel I am told that the movie, which I have watched, deviated. But I found the movie to be an 8 out of 10 and so was looking forward to this series when I heard it was coming out. But from almost the word go things seemed to happen at the edge of a cliff that before half way they were flying off and have never seem to get their wings to fly back up. Acting is as stiff as a mannequin dummy, dialogue is poor and lacking any imagination. The fighting is far from the standard set by the movie and for that matter any other fight scene in most scenes of this genre. Not even the special effects can redeem the fight scenes. If this show gets a second series then I would be most shocked as I can't see even the most forgiving fan taking much more than the first half dozen, if that. Shame as for the first 5 minutes it did look like it was going to be okay. Then.......
Believe (2014)
Why was this cancelled
This series was a well filmed series with a new side plot for each episode that could have given this show some serious longevity. The cast was a great little cast, no one to domineering and non you'd like to see less of in my opinion. They were all nicely directed together into a series that offered each their own limelight as their characters developed.
I can not see why it would be cancelled as I've seen far worse, unfortunately, get longer runs on our screens. Opportunity missed I 'Believe'.
For a present day fantasy drama this one had all that was needed to bring a family together at the end of a hard working day. A child playing the lead role with abilities that are not over the top and used sparingly throughout the show so as not to overdo the SciFi. A protagonist who wants to engineer the world according to his vision of what people with abilities should be able to do, no matter the cost to them or the society around him. But for a family, it's never to violent, when it is, and I actually can remember seeing spurting blood on the few occasions blood was seen.
I for one would have watched season two if they'd have filmed it.
Europa Report (2013)
Simplicity and small cast equals great film.
This film I could watch over and over again. Not only were the cast just right for this movie, no one bigger than the scene, it was all about the plot with just a few special effects that could distract you.
The sets were just right for the job, enough to give it the feel for what was needed, a space craft, a mission press conference etc. Nothing over the top, just right, simple. And a generous dose of NASA footage when needed.
The script, again it was just right for the job. Tension where needed, humour and sadness all in the right place at the right time. It was a well distributed script among it's stars. A pleasant thing to see in a script/film.
So unlike Mars, famous for it's face and 'Martians' obviously, Europa is a relatively new backdrop for the Sci-fi movie genre. And I for one think this was a great giant leap for the sci-fi kind.
The alien life discovered or should I say that discovers them is great for it's lack of presence until the final scene of the movie. Hinted at after landing the creature was simple yet full of fear factor for it's brief appearance.
To anchor all films together you need good music scores. The music chosen for this film was just right on all levels. As you rode along the beat your rode the next rise in tension, ecstasy or drift along a trough of sad food for thoughts.
Any movie that can hold it's own when so many big budget movies get all the praise is work we should all see.
If you are looking for your first film to take you to Europa then this is for you. I know I for one would think of watching Europa 2, even though I know the cast would change But if it had the same production team I'd risk it for a flickfix.
Starship: Rising (2014)
The result of cheap PC software, bad scripts and, well, nothing else really.
I am a sci-fi fan and so it comes as standard that I expect to see some terrible films along the way to my end of days, but after watching this I thought my end of days had come. Got to be the most terrible film I've had the sad misfortune to see, not sure I can afford the therapy to tell you the truth.
Man takes over ship told to fire at the earth, said ship happens to be a planet killer. There is an 'Overseer', as you can imagine, must be killed. There's an army of bad actors, oops 'h'ollywood top earners all doing their best to make the script sound like, well, as it is complete and utter rubbish.
For some unknown reason the producer writes at the end that there's a second film he thinks is on the way. If he's planning on crowd funding the he best hope he can find the biggest crowd this whole world has ever seen as it will need a large pool of 1 penny's to get part two of the ground let alone into space.
