Dla ciebie i ognia (2008)
Brilliant little gem from Poland, watch it if you can!
When I watched this movie, I didn't have high expectations for it as I was told it was a very cheap one. But never judge a movie by its production costs! I was completely taken by surprise, because this is one of the best movies I've seen this year! The characters are great, the protagonist is a complete villain without any morals but still the viewer feels sympathy for him. He is a journalist who will do anything for a good story, no matter if he has to plant evidence himself, as we see in the beginning of the movie. He is a great manipulator and in complete control of the people around him.
But one day, he receives a letter with seemingly harmless photographs of his girlfriend, the only strange thing is she tells him she has never been to these places nor met any of the people in the photographs. So he starts his own investigation, and gradually loses control of the world around him and his whole life is falling to pieces.
The movie has a very creepy atmosphere that slowly builds up to the shocking conclusion. All of this is very well done and although the movie runs for almost two hours, it doesn't get boring for a single minute.
If you can get your hands on a DVD, watch it by all means.
Persona 3 (2006)
brilliant game!
Persona 3 is a must play for every RPG-gamer. You need to be a little open-minded, as this game does not follow the standard city-dungeon-new city-new dungeon-... formula. Actually, it is more a role-playing-game than any other, it simulates about a complete school year at a high-school, including classes, exams and social life. Only at night, you meet with friends to go exploring the dark secrets of your school and the city, this is when the game turns to more classical dungeon exploration which reminded me a little of the .Hack series. You can only control your own character, but you can issue some commands to the others (like concentrate on healing, save magic points, fight with brute force, etc.). Special attacks are performed by so-called personas, demonic manifestations of aspects of the collective human psyche. This kind of Pokemon-for-adults concept was always what made the Persona series stand out, in this game it is even darker because you perform a summoning by shooting yourself in the head with a special gun called 'evoker', blasting out a fragment of your soul that will manifest as a persona and perform a special action (attack, raising attributes, healing, etc.). So in every battle, you'll see your characters shooting themselves countless times, which is really intense and macabre. I will not say anything about the plot here, but expect it to be dark, really weird and going David Lynch all the time. Being about 60% social sim, 10% character setup with persona fusion and 30% dungeon crawler, Persona 3 is something new and should be added to every RPG-gamer's collection.
Noriko no shokutaku (2005)
A brilliant masterpiece! Watch it!
Well, this is not Suicide Club 2 and you will be disappointed if you expect it to be... You need to watch it open-minded! It kind of feels more like a "watchable book" than a movie, it is a new viewing experience which only works if you open up to it. It is one of the most intense movies I have ever seen, it is all about emotion and - the only real parallel to Suicide Club - it cannot really be understood, it can only be felt... I will not talk about the plot here, as this is impossible without spoilers, so go to the discussion board if you want to know more. However, I recommend watching it first. Believe me, it's worth it, unless you expect it to be something you can expect...
