Vermijo (2017)
Classic Western Film Drama from the old school of Westerns
VERMIJO - An encouraging review
I watched this western with open eyes and decided I would not be put off by all the negativity and destructive comments from some reviewers - who seemed to me to be simply having a bad day!
In my opinion this western excels as a serious attempt at a western from a first time filmmaker. I gather it is an amateur independent project and therefore to compare it with the likes of Unforgiven and other Hollywood westerns would be foolish, as it simply cannot compete on that level. Some of the comments made, I believe, are unfounded. The landscape settings and photography are both beautiful, the acting is competent at every level with actually one or 2 powerful performances. The costumes and props are mostly authentic. The story is a traditional western tale of revenge with plenty of action and some well choreographed fight sequences, and a great twist at the end. Do not pass VERMIJO by, or overlook it, if you are in any way a fan of westerns. It may not have the budget or the acting talent of Hollywood westerns like The Magnificent Seven (remake), but in its own way this smart indie western stands tall, and the production team and cast should be proud in their attempt at keeping the Spirit of the Western Alive and Kicking!
Hickok (2017)
If you love westerns give it a shot or 2! Don't read negative reviews!
WOW - some harsh words here from what I must assume are disappointed fans.
Some reviews are almost hateful!
But in all honesty this film is not that bad by a long stretch. It has some great moments for sure and some great shootout and fights. Yes I will agree it does fall flat in some places or feel somewhat unfinished in others and at the half way point I did consider stopping the movie and moving on.
However I am glad I stuck with it because after a somewhat lack lustre start the movie picks up and races to a satisfying conclusion.
If you love westerns give it a shot or 2!
The Gundown (2011)
GREAT WESTERN!
Sometimes I read negative reviews on IMDB and AMAZON and wonder what planet some of the reviewers are on.
Not every film can have a budget of millions so it is not always fair to compare smaller indie films like this with the likes of the remake of The Magnificent Seven. But this is a cracking good western and if you like good action and fine performances in the old tradition of the western then this is for you.
I can tell you from personal experience that negative reviews without any positivity in them simply shows a lack of understanding.
We need more westerns like this to keep the genre alive and kicking!
