Heads up: s2 focuses on trauma
19 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Wanted to give a heads up for those like me who may want to know that season 2 focuses a lot on trauma. The entire season has a spotlight on the characters past trauma's and we watch as many characters endure new traumas. I struggled reading the books due to this, and had to skip some of these scenes in the show. If there are any casual fans of the show who try to avoid depictions of trauma like I do, just be aware. Proceed with caution. There are plenty of flashbacks, dreams and nightmares, discussion around violation, past and new trauma depictions, some violence against women discussed, ptsd and its symptoms depicted, breakdowns, triggers related to trauma that cause breakdowns, the list goes on. But this certainly is a focus for season 2, and it was not for season 1, and I wanted to put that out there for anyone who is trying to careful and wants to know. I was able to fast forward through a bit, but if this came out three years ago I wouldn't have been able to watch at all.

Season 2 shifts in tone and gets much darker. It is far more graphic with its violence. There is more torture, suffering, people are cruel to each other, and the depiction of both genuine fear and horror are seen often.

With those things aside, it's a really well-made series. The 2nd season is incredibly fun and entertaining to watch. Yes, it's not perfect, there are plot holes and gaps since it diverts from the books in areas particularly the end, but it was still fun and entertaining. I loved seeing the Asian representation in season 2, particularly now having three actors and three characters who are half Asian. That is relatable and I am glad to be seeing it. The acting, the cast, the effects and the landscape, the costumes, everything was so well done. But the soundtrack- Joseph Trapanese knows how to do a soundtrack that sets the atmosphere perfectly. It will be on repeat for the next month now. Amazing show, so well done, such a fan. I'm eagerly waiting for more seasons and I heard Netflix is considering a spinoff series- YES please. I'm on board!

Not perfect, but still an entertaining watch
11 July 2020
I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not perfect, but it's a fantastic movie. It's an action-drama, and both elements are executed well. I was invested in the characters, each are well developed and fleshed out. I was invested in the story. Both characters of Andy and Nile lead perfectly. The relationship between Joe and Nicky was raw. Booker and Andy's pain show how immortality can be a curse. The action scenes were choreographed fantastic (definitely lots of gore), the cinematography was breath taking, and the story itself was well written, well directed, and well done. I am glad they had Rucka write the screenplay. Prince-Blythewood did an excellent job for her first action film. The only things keeping this from a 10/10 was that the music felt a bit out of place, and the enemy did not feel as intimidating against immortal warriors. The last half felt a bit predictable, yet the end had enough of a jaw dropping moment to surprise me. Some dialogue felt a bit forced. These are minor things compared to the scale of the story, the action scenes, and the drama scenes that fleshed out the characters. I really appreciated the representation and diversity in this film. Along with that, there was no sexualization of our female leads, and for me, that is very important. Truly refreshing to see female leads like this. The character development throughout was on point, and the overall message was one of still seeing the good in humanity. It was gritty, raw, violent, authentic, and a great film. I am really hoping for more. All in all, an enjoyable and entertaining watch. Not perfect, but still great. Planning on rewatching this very soon.

awful if you enjoyed the book.

I read the books and loved them. I became a huge fan. I know that movies don't follow the books very well, but I enjoyed Divergent and could not wait for Insurgent. This movie really disappointed me. I had high hopes for it. The reason was that I loved the book and knew they would change the story, but they changed it so dramatically it hardly had anything in common with the book, and the story/plot they used to replace the books story/plot was incomparable- I loved the book far better. I guess what I'm getting to here is IF you read the book and you're a huge fan of the book, this movie will disappoint.

Along with that- the acting was great- but the plot in my opinion was very predictable and poorly written.
