Deadgirl (2008)
Way better than expected!
DON'T WORRY, NO SPOILERS AHEAD. Ignore the films detractors on IMDb, most of their arguments are total moot points, and are as silly as the 'Chicken or the egg, which came first?' One thing that's always given me the creeps in horror films is people being buried alive, and films like The Vanishing for example, really made me uneasy, but sometimes there are worse things than buried alive, as this film demonstrates! Gore films really don't bother me, in fact, for the most part I find them to be the lazy way of making a horror film. Deadgirl however has little real gore in it, and relies on the grimness of the situation. Like the best horror movies, it's hardly enjoyable to watch, more harrowing than anything. It kinda' blurs the vampire and zombie myths into one, and adds it's own sick twist.
The ending was just a little bit of a letdown, and there are quite a few loose ends that you really would have liked resolved, but this isn't Hollywood film making where all the loose ends are tidied up and everyone lives happily ever after, so I can forgive it for that! If your a horror fan and sick of the same old rubbish they shovel us horror fans, then watch Deadgirl, and I guarantee at least some of your faith will be restored in American horror films.
Truckers (1992)
Magical stuff!
I was 16 or 17 years old when this was first shown on telly. I remember at the time thinking, "Grow up man, you shouldn't be watching kids stuff!" But this is much much more than just 'kids stuff' this is pure magic, the sort of telly rarely (if ever!?) seen nowadays.
Wonderful attention to detail, great voice cast, outstanding stop motion animation, intensely detailed and beautifully made costumes and sets, and to top it off, a great story set in a fantastically dark and archaic little world within a (human) world. This has drama, humour, horror, tension, action and thrills. Everything a kid (or big kid!) could possibly want.
I'm 31 now and still think this is pure class. As much as I enjoy Wallace And Grommit and the like, this tops the lot! Criminally forgotten, and to add insult to injury this has NEVER been made available on DVD!? :(
Scandalous I tell you!
If you see it, buy it! Even if you have to buy a VHS recorder to view it. It really is that good ;)
Throg (2004)
In short, well shot, wrong genre! :-(
Sorry, but this is a putrid childish mess. No plot to speak of and no laughs to be had (considering it's SUPPOSED to be a comedy) On the plus side, the overall look of the film is very professional. As a low budget horror this could have been very very good, what possessed them to do comedy is beyond me!?
In my opinion comedy is quite hard to do right, as its a very subjective thing. Also, not everyone can do comedy (These lot especially!) The producers of this shot themselves in the foot if you ask me!
Take my advice, you lot obviously have talent, but please DO a horror film!
'Chô' kowai hanashi A: yami no karasu (2004)
A poor example of what Asian Horror genre has to offer.
I'm going to try and keep this brief, because this movie really isn't worth the time or effort of typing anything more than a few lines! First off, this is one of the most yawn inducing movies I've ever seen. There is little in the way of plot, and some of the characters are just irritating rather than being creepy or weird as their obviously trying (and failing) to be! The plot is just plain silly, and the resulting 'twist'(if you can call it that) at the end is just laughable. I hated every comatose inducing second of this movie. This is the painting by numbers method of Asian Horror movie making. You've seen it all before, and done MUCH better!
