The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
Corny as.
A number of deep and meaningful themes are taken on in this film and in my opinion the story itself is very good.
But in terms of cinema, I think it's terrible. I know coming-of-age dramas are usually a bit corny but this was SO corny it got me rolling my eyes quite a few times.
Magnolia (1999)
Excellent, but...
This would have been a straight 10/10 for me, If it wasn't for this horribly corny singalong scene somewhere around 2/3 of the film. What on earth what that about? Otherwise, it's a wonderful piece of cinema.
Gods of Egypt (2016)
Why. Oh why.
It is beyond me how millions of dollars can we thrown away on a production like this. I am saying "production" for lack of a better word, because I can not call this cinema. There are very little cinematographic qualities here, even as far as big blockbusters are concerned.
Cardboard acting. Photography? Well with this much CGI it's kind of hard to even raise this point. Plot... Inexistant. Action scenes... so badly choreographed it made me cringe throughout. Dialogues? Corny. It's almost like they botched this film on purpose.
If you've enjoyed it though, fair enough. In fact, I wish I had enjoyed this, at least it wouldn't have felt like a complete waste of time.
The Art of Self-Defense (2019)
Somewhat ok...
While the topic is somewhat interesting, misconceptions of masculinity/security through the misunderstanding of martial art principles, the delivery was quite poor, and at times it felt it was actually a directorial choice: predictable plot (from the opening 10min), kind of cardboard acting (even from actors that usually deliver)... could have been on purpose for the sake of making a spoof of wacky martial art dojos... doesn't make up for a great film though. Some decent direction at times, quirky humour but never really fully hit the spot for me. All in all, not really worth it. The ending was better than the rest though.
Joker (2019)
I am rattled.
Great direction, photography... everything. Phoenix's performance is, as per usual, absolutely on point. This film reaches way, way beyond the boundaries of the Batman universe.
Domino (2005)
You probably shouldn't bother...
This film does have its moments: the narration style, the photography are somewhat original. However, at times, it gets _seriously_ corny, and the plot is complete nonsense.
Penguins of Madagascar (2014)
List of actors references in Penguins of Madagascar
Watched that with my girlfriend getting wasted and we found they made a few good puns and references to classic films and actors throughout. Clearly, this film is all about Private. The rest of the crew, except Skipper, is underrepresented, which is a bit disappointing. The story is utter nonsense but ey, that's not what you watch this kind of film for. Plenty of action, and the usual silliness that made the success of the spin-off. The addition of a rival team of actual professionals greatly helps with the storyline, as I do not think anyone could handle an hour and a half of Skipper's dodgy plans.
In the end, it's a kid's film, nothing spectacular but just for the record, we tried to list all actor's references made by Dave when giving orders to his crew. We thought it was quite a good effort from the writers.
-Nicolas Cage, Drew Barrymore, Kevin Bacon, Hally Berry, Robin Wright, Will Hurt, Hugh Jackman, Charlize Theron, Helen Hunt, Elijah Wood. (didn't get that one but someone else has cited it somewhere)
