One More Time (2023)
Heartwarming Groundhog day, Swedish style
Just watched it on Netflix with a spare 90 minutes and really enjoyed it. Sure, it's a a Groundhog day retake, but then that itself wasn't original. Both stories are as old as time itself. But they at least call out the previous film as part of the plot.
It has a great message (look after your friends!) and is acted well by all involved, with great characters.
The only issue would be that Hedda Stiernstedt looks far too young to be 40. In fact when I watched the trailer I thought that she was playing Amelia's 18 year old version!
I'd call it a bit of light-hearted fun, definitely worthy of your time. And it did get me feeling like I should try to reconnect with some people from my past...
The Space Between Us (2017)
Decent enough but instant Mars to Earth communication?
Yeah, if you like a futuristic themed , lightly romantic sci-fi it's not bad. I liked the characters and the acting was great. Certainly worth a couple of hours curled up in front of Netflix.
But the instant chat annoyed me...It would be AT LEAST 3 minutes before a signal was received, and as much as around 10 minutes.
Meh.
Foundation (2021)
Ignore the extremists
Yes, the extremists who insist on giving out a pointless, disingenuous and frankly pathetic 1 star to something that is clearly not.
I am a massive Asimov fan. I recently went through the robot stories (I Robot, Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, The Robots of Dawn, Robots and Empire... then the 3 empire novels, and then (this time) in chronological order, the entire 7 book Foundation series.
The Robot series and Foundation series are masterworks.
Of course this TV adaptation isn't going to be a copy and paste...it ought not be. But after watching the first two episodes, I enjoyed it for what it is. It is stunning to look at and borrows important details from the books.
Changing some genders to fit with a more modern world is not a problem (with 1 possible caveat - I am wondering how changing the single most important character from the entire robot and Foundation series - a male humaniform robot, into a woman...Hmm I will wait to see how that pans out)
Otherwise, it was great fun and I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
It probably isn't a 9 as I have rated it, but with all the pathetic extremists giving it low scores I felt the need to balance a little.
