Missing in the Land of Gods (2012)
An emotional road movie about hope, faith and spirit.
The documentary is an emotional roller coaster following two Australian parents Jock & Di through India on their search for their missing son Ryan. As they travel from place to place they continue receiving phone calls from people who have seen their posters and think they've found Ryan, and your hopes go up. And then they crash down when the parents find that the supposed Ryan is just a homeless Indian man with Western features. Perched on the edge of my seat, I watched the film, pleading that they would find him. I'm not going to say if they eventually find him or not. One needs to watch the film and go through that journey on their own. However, I will tell that this is not an average documentary that you may expect. This is a very fine doco- tour of off-the-beaten-track India where the quiet & easygoing Australian culture is finely juxtaposition-ed with the amazingly colorful and spiritual Indian culture. Along the way, you meet black magic men, astrologers, police and locals who are touched by the story and want to help. You encounter Indian hospitality and bureaucracy, spirituality and poverty. I haven't felt such a strong connection with a story and it's characters for a very long time.
