The Libertine (2004)

OK, i liked it
17 July 2006
this movie is very similar to the movie "quills". it is about the many adventures of the second earl of rochester, played by johnny depp. johnny depp's acting in this was brilliant. i loved it. he amazed me throughout the movie. his character had sooo many great quotes, as well. the story was absolutely brilliant, and even more interesting seeing as it is a true story. as one might say, you can't make this stuff up. rosamund pike, who plays elizabeth malet, the wife of the earl, was surprisingly good. i last saw her in pride and prejudice, and i didn't see much that was special. however, i now realize that that was simply because her character was not meant to show much emotion. pike gave an outstanding performance, completely different from her pride and prejudice performance. she and depp, for me, completely stole the show. their relationship in it was outstanding. as for the one bit of the movie i did not like...the character lizzie barry was very underdeveloped. i don't think it was necessarily the acting as much as it was the writing. you never seemed to know where she was coming from. throughout the movie, i could never decide what her true feelings for the earl were. they were so scattered. as for john malkovich, well, you gotta love him. as a warning, this movie does have some very...risqué things in it. if you're not up for it, then don't try.

couldn't stop crying
10 July 2006
this is actually the first 10 out of 10 that i've ever given. it's unbelievable. i recommend watching it with someone who will hold you when you cry, a box of tissues, and chocolate. it makes you want to die in the end, it's so sad. it is set during world war II, in japan. these two kids, sato and setzuko (sp?) try to make it on their own. watching this movie gives you the feeling that everything that is happening, is happening to you. it's not pity sobbing, it's flat out sobbing. i absolutely do not recommend watching this alone. it's way too much to handle. at one point in the movie, i almost turned it off because it was THAT sad. when they released the movie, they had the viewing of this movie, and immediately after the viewing of "my neighbor totoro" because they didn't want to send people home so completely depressed. you might want to do that. just rent them both and watch this one first.

Green River Killer (2005 Video)

do not see this movie
3 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
this movie was terrible. i even turned it off half way, and i love bad movies. this movie is like a violent porno. sooo bad. it looked as if someone rented a video camera from billy bob down the street, and started video taping. absolutely horrible. the cast is horrible, the script makes you laugh, and at the same time, cry. they got the worst actor, put him into suspenders, and had him violently make out with women. right before he has sex, he takes his shirt off, but then puts his suspenders back on, probably for holding his hairy beer belly back. the sad thing is, this would have been a great plot! one would think this movie would write itself. apparently, the producers found the most incompetent people to work on this film, thus making extremely difficult what should have been handed to them on a silver platter. absolutely horrible, i beg of you, do not see it. do not waste your money or time.

The Hole (2001)

"the hole experience"
3 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
OK, so, it wasn't all that great, but at the same time it was perfect. this movie has taught us so many things that we should never forget. 1.) never vacation in a hole 2.) if you must vacation in a hole, do not do it with a sex deprived person 3.) a word to all persons British: never try to jip an American off of his/her soda, violence may erupt 4.) when in doubt, make sure everyone is clear on how to exit the said area. 5.) never attempt to climb anything that was made "during the war". viewers will most definitely walk away with these lessons in mind.i thoroughly enjoyed this movie, mostly for the sheer insanity of it. i have since referred to it as "the hole experience". sure, the acting got a little shaky at some points, but if you are looking for a psychological thriller, you have to see this movie. it keeps you guessing until the end, then makes you want to "cack your pants". for those of you who are scared of gore, there are a few scenes near the end with tons of blood. there is also about a 3 or so minute scene of vomit. they do not hold back. if you're OK with that, then i guarantee you will enjoy the movie. whether you like it or not, i dunno. however, you will enjoy "the hole experience".

better than expectations
16 April 2006
I got this movie because it seemed like another corny, stupid, not even slightly "scary" movie. Instead, it actually surprised me. If you're looking for an all around scary, jump-out-and-grab-you, try to figure it out movie, this is the one. I suggest watching it with a group of your friends who like to scream. I like to think that I've become immune to most scary movies, I watch them so often. This one actually creeped me out a bit. It's mostly just knowing something's going to happen and waiting for it. I had the most fun trying to figure it out : who's behind this serial killer? However, I do warn you, most of my friends didn't go home alone that night we watched it. It's really intense, it has many twists and turns, and sometimes very gruesome. Just goes to show you, never get caught up in a stupid, teenage game that could very well go wrong. You might end up dead.

Closer (I) (2004)
vulgar, but realistic
12 November 2005
this is the type of movie that you absolutely have to be in a bad mood about love. this isn't a sappy love movie with puppies and flowers, it's rather realistic and very vulgar. i suggest not watching it if you are easily offended by words. the characters rarely show morals, but it is clear that they are trying to do the right thing. it's a very complicated movie, and very dark. the ending, however, makes the movie a teensy bit better. makes you go "hmm..." but nothing more. it will make you examine every other relationship you've ever had, and compare and contrast them to the movie. has a definite risk of making one bitter, or making one feel better for what they have done and the mistakes they have made.

Saw II (2005)
4/10
horrible
5 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
OK, if you've already seen the first one, you will be absolutely disappointed. it in no way lives up to the first one at all. first of all, saw was great because it was two kids on a low budget writing a script. they had to make up for the lack of money with the plot and script. secondly, the plot was really good and thick and everyone was connected in some odd way. the ending had so many twists, it was just brilliant. OK, now for saw 2. they had more money, so they definitely used it. instead of the people being in one room, it was one huge house. having more money took away from the effect, and most definitely the script, the plot and the acting. the plot had an unbelievable amount of holes in it. the people were connected by one stupid little line and the ending was absolutely ridiculous. one of the characters is just a complete idiot and decides to just get mad about everything. so, when he finds out there are numbers on the back of people's necks, instead of just kindly asking them to turn around, he kills them! finally, someone points out that he has a number on the back of his head that he's going to need, so he can't kill everyone. first of all, he tries seeing it with his little knife, then he decides to just cut it off, as any logical person would do. then, the murderer, john some how came up with a lot of money between dr gordon and now. before hand, his technique was simple. the tools he used to murder people could be found at a yardsale. in this one, somehow he got surgical equipment, the brains to do surgery and about five places with 20 computers. at some point in time, the writers seemed to have decided that it didn't matter that he had cancer, he can still do all this stuff. however, when you see him, he's in pretty bad shape. OK, now for the ending. remember the changed druggy, amanda? well, apparently, after she was almost killed, she decided the entire idea was a good one. so, she comes to john as an apprentice and decides to take his place as jigsaw. john becomes her yoda and teaches her the way of murder. at the end of saw 1, john had the memorable line of "GAME OVER". it was so great because of his voice, his appearance, everything. at the end of saw 2, amanda comes in, looking like she just went shopping and got her hair done and put on make up, and in a very little girl voice says "game over". absolutely horrible.

Falling Down (1993)
odd, but satisfying
21 August 2005
this movie is the summary of the frustration of a normal man. most everything that happens to him, could happen to anyone. it shows the more screwed up aspects of America. in order to enjoy this movie, you have to have somewhat of a dark side to yourself. it's not a movie for entertainment, exactly, but a very intriguing movie. it is unbelievably compelling. in some cases, the acting is absolutely wonderful. however, this is not a steady statement. michael douglas went on many ups and downs throughout the movie, as far as acting is concerned. as completely odd as this movie is, i liked it. i wouldn't recommend it to everyone though. however, once you start watching it, i doubt you'll really want to stop, simply out of pure curiosity.

Hide and Seek (2005)

absolutely fantastic!
14 August 2005
i am not one that gets scared over movies often. in fact, i haven't really been scared of a movie since i was in elementary school. however, i love scary movies! i love the feeling of getting scared and / or just laughing at the ones that are horrible. if you feel like actually getting unbelievably creeped out, this movie is the one to get. it's perfect to watch with a group of friends, or by yourself (if you really feel like freaking out). dakota fanning does a wonderful job of being a creepy, severely messed up little kid. that was probably the scariest aspect of the movie. the idea of a child being somewhat psycho is very scary to me. it is not her usual, adorable child movie. also, kudos to robert deniro, who succeeded in being a concerned parent and not playing it off as hilarious, which he sometimes has a tendency to do. it's a very disturbing, creepy movie, unless you were a child like dakota fanning when you were younger, in which case you will probably relate. i wish you the best of luck if you are and hope never to meet up with you. watch this movie, it will leave you completely satisfied in a very unsatisfying way, if you know what i mean. if you don't, you'll find out. it's the definition of the "heebie geebies".

sweet revenge
15 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
while i wouldn't call this movie incredible, it is a very good movie. the plot is very thick. a man fakes his own death and the wife is charged with his murder only to find that her friend has taken her daughter to go off and live with her "dead" husband. i suggest (to all the girls out there) watching this movie with one of your best friends and some brownies. oddly enough, it's a great way to make you feel better about yourself. it makes you feel like anything is possible even in the dankest situations. there are a lot of tiny law glitches in this movie, and if that bothers you too much, don't watch it. however, it is one of the most sweetest revenge stories of our time. i'm teetering on saying it is this time period's "count of monte cristo" although there are many differences between the two stories. the sense of utter satisfaction from both is the same. ashley judd is a great actress and this part was perfect for her.

flashy
15 June 2005
i have to admit, i didn't go into this movie expecting anything great. i really wasn't going to see it until i was invited. so, i tried to keep a somewhat open mind. i think what made the original star wars great was that they did so much with the little that they had. now, it's like they just want to impress the audiences with flashy lights. yes, the special effects were impressive. it was also kind of interesting to see the characters transforming from something good to something evil. however, the acting ability was not something they really got into with this movie. there were some good moments, but overall, the focus was simply on the flashy lights and things that go boom. actors that are usually very good were not in this movie. however, i can't say that i blame them because they probably knew the whole point of the movie was to show off the special effects and computer tricks. for those of you that would like some closure in the series, see it. for those of you who really don't care, don't waste your time.

fabulous

first of all, let me just say that jim carrey is amazing. he does such a variety of movies. this is the perfect family film. i know a lot of people who do not like the "fake, happy ending" type of film. they think it instills a false sense of hope in kids. this movie lets in the good and the bad of the world, so it is not fake. however, it's overall message of the importance of family and sticking together is very heart warming. it has humor and adventure. i'd recommend this movie if you would like a family night together, or if you're baby sitting and want a movie to show the kids. people of all ages can enjoy this movie. i wouldn't show it to someone too young (preschool) and expect them to understand it all, but that's to be expected with lots of movies. it's also a great date film, not too intense and not too corny. it's wonderful. kudos to meryl streep, jim carrey and billy connolly. absolutely smashing!

O (2001)
horrible
13 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
i know it's hard to make Shakespeare easy to understand for teenagers, but must you turn it into Ebonics? maybe it's because i performed in the play "Othello" that i am completely disgusted with this version. unlike the actual "Othello", this entire thing did not start over whether Iago got a promotion or not. no, it had to do with O asking michael (cassio) to share the VIP award from basketball with him! yes, a crazed killing spree was all started because of a VIP award in basketball! you have got to be kidding me. the script in this movie was absolutely terrible. many of the worst lines were given to josh hartnett, like saying he knew more about "white chicks" or telling O that he's "being played, dawg". there is a reason why Shakespeare's plays are famous. they have wonderful plots and the language that he used was amazing. reducing his language to "yo" and "dawg" ruins it! keeping the basic plot does not make it good! any black person who saw this movie was probably very offended. they basically tell the audience that the only reason why O is in this rich school is because of basketball. they successfully fulfilled the stereotype that black people are only good at basketball. also, throughout the movie they played this intense rap music, but when O dies (the one black guy) they switched the music to opera! did they just think to themselves "oh, now that the black guy's dead we can play white music now" absolutely ridiculous!

Darkness (2002)

unsatisfied
13 June 2005
at first, i was teetering between giving this movie a three or a four. in the end, i had no choice but to give it a three. the characters in this movie were very weak. the mother didn't have nearly enough concern that a normal mother would have. the daughter really took on the mother role in this movie. the father's problems did not seem to have an end and were every scattered. it was like someone saying "i have a cold", but then they start throwing up and twitching. obviously, there's something else wrong. the father's problems were very vague. i waited so patiently for everything to just make sense in the end. however, the plot completely fell apart and it seemed like the movie makers were just trying to scare and confuse the audience. it was a failed attempt. overall advice, do not waste your time and money on this movie.

Leprechaun (1992)

funny
13 June 2005
this is one of those movies that is meant to be scary, but really is not. i just happen to love that kind of movie. it's great for sitting down and watching with a group of friends for a good laugh. they figured this out later when making more leprechaun movies and not even trying to make them scary. i love the leprechaun series. warwick davis is my hero. if you're up for a good laugh, i suggest getting a group of your friends together and watching this. you must have a good sense of humor and an open mind. if you enjoy this, watch the rest of them. they get more outrageous as they go. i don't recommend this to people who do not find joy in watching silly movies.

Stage Beauty (2004)

amazing
13 June 2005
i absolutely loved this movie. i especially loved the scenes when they were trying to work a scene. i've been in many plays and watching those scenes was like deja vu. if you haven't seen this movie, you must. it is a movie for the actor. if you've never acted in a play or anything at all, you probably won't appreciate it as much.however, if you have, it's an absolutely orgasmic experience. this is what i would consider a diamond in the rough movie. you won't hear about it unless you search for it. towards the end of the movie, it does tend to skew from the facts. it starts to show more contemporary acting, instead of using the acting style of the time period. honestly, if this does not bother you, watch this movie.
