Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Best Zombie Movie Ever
Maybe that isn't saying much since the genre has a ton of trash in it. But this movie has Everything, creepy scares, startle scares, gore, action, comedy, great casting, likable characters, unlikeable but hilarious characters, and the MOST important REWATCHABILITY (did I just make up a word? No, I have been using it for years). This movie is fantastic to watch over and over, start anywhere or just enjoy for a few minutes here and there. It's great to watch and imagine how differently things could have gone for the group.
A zombie masterpiece and Snyder's best film if you ask me! I would have loved to see a sequel!
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Pleasant Surprise
Less Goofy than presented in trailers, but still pretty funny and silly. No Academy awards here, but most performances were good! The special effects were really very good, never saw anything subpar. At times the visuals were really quite stunning! Tons of action and even a couple of decent jump scares that were unexpected but appreciated! The story was mostly predictable but not horribly so. Ultimately, it was fun, funny, and entertaining! I, at No time felt that I had wasted my time or lost two hours of my life like some trash from Hollywood these days. In fact, I even left thinking I would like to see some more. I would definitely go see a sequel, solid 7/10.
M3GAN (2022)
Fun, then Funny, then Violent Fizzle
The first part of the movie was genuinely endearing, nicely developed characters and a great performance from Violet McGraw. I definitely teared up! The subtle yet pervasive satirical social commentary was well done and not overdone. The creep was just right, I would have like a bit more violence and gore but I get that the PG-13 rating means more money...
The final third or so loses a bit of steam and is more predictable than the first two thirds and honestly felt a little rushed in my opinion. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and wanted more! In the end, I suppose a movie is good if it leaves you wanting more, right?
M3GAN2 sounds like fun!
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
THIS is the REAL Review
The movie really is beautiful. It has its flaws, you'll wonder, where the heck is this going and maybe it wasn't going fast enough before the runway ended. However, Florence Pugh is outstanding. The story combines some previously explored topics but in new and I believe purposely ambiguous ways. That is why this movie, with obvious commentary on misogyny, gender roles, the patriarchy, the destruction of the nuclear family via economic social engineering, is fantastic! It will keep me evaluating and reevaluating it for days. It is not for everyone perhaps, but the critics seem really catty, Olivia Wilde shows great promise as a director! Definitely, worth the watch!
Prey (2022)
A MUST WATCH
For Predator fans, it is obligatory obviously. But it's a really good story for anyone. Well-paced, well-acted, and beautiful scenery. Hope there is more to come.
My ONLY problem with the story set in 1720 is that in AVP (Alien Vs Predator) they refer to Predators hunting Xenomorphs even showing a Mayan Pyramid getting obliterated to prevent them from overwhelming the planet. The Mayan Civilization ended about 700 -800 years before this film, so what's up with that??
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Life Altering!
This movie is BONKERS, but in the best way possible!!!
Some people cannot suspend their disbelief for 2 hours but for any sci-fi junky or average person, this movie will really make you reflect on your life and FEEL so many different things! Some people don't like being made to feel things that they'd prefer to ignore, I get it, but again for the mature viewer you will truly appreciate the ARTISTIC manipulation of your emotions. This movie takes you on a journey that few films ever will! I loved it and this is a tour de force for Michelle Yeoh.
No Time to Die (2021)
It has almost everything!
It is a Bond for a new generation, I grew up with the womanizing Bond...this film is not for those who can't picture their James Bond evolving or having truly been a victim of the bravado and machismo of the old patriarchy. While I missed the usual parade of gorgeous Bond girls, (not that Naomie Harris or Ana de Armis are not stunning!) this movie is for the wider and evolved audience. When can you ever say a Bond movie brought you to the brink of tears??? This was an extremely well paced and ingeniously thought out film. The action was outstanding, the story & plot well-developed, and Daniel Craig's performance superb! He really goes out with a bang! I loved it, haven't had that much fun in a movie theater in a while!
Army of the Dead (2021)
Come ON !!!!
What a let down!
No character development, too long!
Honestly, it seems like a Snyder knockoff. SO Weak, I LOVE Dawn of the Dead, this is not even in the same genre. This has a hokey feel yet no comedy, for almost 2.5 hours you'd think I'd care about SOME of the characters... So underwhelmed, now the action is great but it's lipstick on a pig! More plot holes than a shot up zombie! Meh...disappointed.
In the Earth (2021)
Close to the worst movie I have ever seen
Some decent cinematography and nice early build of suspense. Then it gets bizarre, not necessarily bad in a horror film. Then it goes off the rails, dumb as hell, and tries its best to give you a damn seizure. Ending sucks, nothing rewarding or redeeming here! Avoid this at all costs, pretty sure this movie gave me a headache! The acting is decent but overall complete trash! Not worthy of a movie theater and I wouldn't even put my TV through that!!!
Nobody (2021)
Great fun and well done
Odenkirk is in top form! Action sequences from Fights to car chases to shoot'em up are top notch! There is also a nuanced and detailed story if you look closely.
I watched it twice so far, that is high praise from me!
The Father (2020)
This film opens your heart forcefully and undoubtedly forever!
Sir Anthony Hopkins is quite literally the best actor I have ever seen. His performance is so startlingly honest and impeccable that the mere recollection of the final scene possesses the power to immediately illicit tears and render me a heaving pulp. It is witnessing a triumvirate; the excellently-written character, the finest of actors bringing the page to life ultimately culminating in a truth so powerful that simultaneously shows both the fragile human mind and the indomitable human spirit.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Great Battles, a couple of surprises, Bad drama
The battles were nearly immaculate, perhaps a tad bit too much camera motion early on.
There are a couple of interesting surprises, some needing a little more explanation I think...
The drama was completely and utterly superfluous, clearly an afterthought. I did think it was funny that Tarzan was in the movie! Decent acting all around but Rebecca Hall is the one that keeps the horrible storyline even remotely interesting. The "comedy" fell flat all but once when in actually felt genuine. Even the music choices were underwhelming.
Watching it in a theater or this movie may put you to sleep! Not a horrible film, but ultimately disappointing.
If they'd only give me a meager $2M I could edit this film fairly easily into an 8/10...
I'm sure some of that 8 is left on the cutting room floor.
Honestly, if not for the special effects this would be in the 6/10 range.
The Grudge (2019)
Ehhhh....
Some cinematic value, a couple of decent scares but wholly disappointing. There is a possibility that an okay film got left on the cutting room floor judging by the cast, but ultimately relying on a backstory from a film series based on a film series is a grave cinematic nail in the coffin.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Nothing to see here
Terrible in so many ways, yeah ... at times Sandler's acting does get felt by the audience. Mostly just caricatures by all other roles, not seeing the Sadie appeal personally. I truly feel that the critics were paid off on this one. Two hours of pathetic freneticism followed by a moment of simultaneous shock and satisfaction a movie does not make!
Crawl (2019)
You will be on the edge of your seat!
As a Floridian The hurricane element hit home, the gator action is crazy, it will give you some anxiety for sure, but the very best kind. Fun ride for sure, the absurdity creeps up on you with subtlety. In the end, the performances by the actors sell it and turn this from a B movie into a cinematic-worthy film
Damaged (2014)
Hands down best Lifetime Movie I have ever seen
For a Lifetime Movie, this score is really a ten. We all know they are our guilty British Colombian pleasure and not of the highest cinematic quality. Secondly, let me tell you have seen a few dozen lifetime movies with my wife (yes I am a man), I can say without reservation this is the BEST one I have seen. I am not the biggest Chris Klein fan, but he was pretty decent in it. I told my wife what I thought would make the best ending to the movie about an our and a half into it and boy did they read my mind without any spoilers, you should definitely check it out. I guess the Renaissance of TV is truly here. Thank you Netflix (HOC), HBO (GOT), Showtime (HL/RD/HoL), Starz (TM/S*), AMC (TWD/BB/HOW), and BBC (DW/Cu/) for raising the ante on what passes for good TV. As they say, and in this instance applicable while simultaneously veracious (while normally malapropos), A rising tide lifts all boats! (JFK)akin to Reagan "trickle down" fallacy. What an odd juxtaposition JFK and RR, different sides of the same coin I suppose? There is no Republican, there is no Democrat, there is no matter, there is no dark matter, ONLY GRAY MATTER. Think for yourselves people !
