The Shannara Chronicles (2016–2017)
7/10
Not what I expected but enjoyable
6 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I read the books a long time ago and enjoyed them a lot. Terry Brooks is one of my favorite fantasy authors and you should read the books if you like fantasy genre. I understand how people who read the books may not like this show. The show has a teenage drama tone that at times is upsetting. The acting from a couple characters falls short at times.

However, I am enjoying it even with some of the faults. I am glad this story is being told and would be happy to see more stories/series filmed if it isn't canceled. Is it as good as Game of Thrones? No! It's less serious and campy, but when do you get a chance to see fantasy on TV?

Surprisingly, Wil Ohmsford and Eretria characters work well on the show. Looking at the actor who plays Wil I worried he be a stereotypical cheesy actor, but his acting is quite natural. Erectia is engaging and also entertaining. Also, I am glad they are not using a cheesy "English" accents. It's refreshing to hear them act natural and they just work.

The character Allanon played by Manu Bennett is a real stretch. He is definitely not what I envisioned but he has not annoyed me enough to say he is terrible. The problem is Allanon is a huge pivotal character in the books and he isn't nailing the performance yet. The accent isn't working for me either. He needs subtitles, or needs to add space between words. Let's just say the casting was not great here.

Now the ugly! Poppy Drayton who plays Amberle Elessedil is TERRIBLE!!! There are times when I giggle how bad her acting can get. Her facial expressions are awful and she has a confounded expression permanently ironed on. One saving grace is she killed the boyfriend who was just as terrible if not more cheesy. The two can't act - think "Twilight" meets Dungeons & Dragons the movie level of acting. Thankfully, Lorin dies off soon. Unfortunately, Poppy is a main character at least for Elfstones.

The Demon CGI is not bad. In fact I'd say the show is visually appealing. I'd give the effects a solid "B" for TV. It has a unique look and feels impressive.

Yeah, the show, it's not perfect, but very few TV show are. Fantasy rarely hits the screens, and this show is a welcomed fix for the genre. There is another Terry Brook's series worth filming called Magic Kingdom for Sale-Sold. And when will we see Dragonlance on the big screen?

Tut (2015)

It could've of been good but has too many bad distractions
21 July 2015
The mini-series is mildly entertaining. The quality of the sets and size and scale is pretty good. However, everything else about the show is not good. The show is too simple. A boy who becomes a Pharaoh and is surrounded by idiots who want to overthrow or take on more power for themselves. Tut is portrayed as a descent person that visits commoners and drinks beer like the rest of us, but fails to eliminate huge threats that surround him.

After two episodes I can't get past how badly Sibylla Deen(Ankhe) acts. Tut's sister/wife/queen has a huge part and is more involved in the plot than King Tut. She has no facial expression, none, the only thing that moves is her lips. Her acting is so bad and distracting that I can't forgive the many other flaws in the show. I really hope they never cast this woman again.

The other thing that is distracting is the "over-the-top" English accent being used. It's another trend that is starting to be cheesy.

Alone (2015– )

I was hoping for more
9 July 2015
I love survival shows like Dual Survival, Survivorman, Ray Maers, and Extreme Survival. I was hoping to watch a bush craft show where contestants actually excel in the wild. It's fascinating to see modern man attempting to survive in the wild by themselves and demonstrate bush craft. However, after seeing several episodes I am annoyed by what I was watching. There's a lot of personal analysis of each contestants modern life and how they feel about isolation. If you consider the show is about 45 minutes without commercials then I estimate you actually see about 10% or less of actual survival activity. Maybe the problem is contestants actually film themselves and are not professional film makers. The majority of the show consists of each contestant talking to the camera and in their shelter. Most of the contestants are going downhill and barely surviving. It's really depressing and at times just plain boring. In my opinion they need to have contestants with a bit more skill and experience. I'd have professionals record their more actual activity. Do away with the family background filler and more bush craft.

Fishing Naked (2015)

I feel asleep twice watching this movie..
3 June 2015
I was hoping to watch a funny movie. But it isn't a good comedy, more a tragedy. There are some porn movies with a better script. At least there's nudity in those movies.

While watching this train wreck, I was curious how bad the reviews would be. To my surprise I saw it was rated very high by a few. Not sure what is up with that.

Script 1 out of 10; Acting: 1 our of 10; Laughs: 1 out of 10; Eye Candy: 2 out of 10.

To bad, I want to enjoy low budget films for what they are, but there is no payoff.
