Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog (2021)
Finally a fresh Scooby-Doo movie that is really worth it.
Considering the wave of newer animated Scooby-Doo movies that have fallen flat (seriously, 90% of when they meet Elvira in Happy Halloween Scooby-Doo takes place with the characters talking while driving) it's so nice to see Scooby-Doo Meets Courage getting the formula right.
The voice cast is top notch, props to getting the originals back from Courage (RIP Thea White, you were wonderful as Muriel) and the majority of the Mystery Inc cast returning (Thank Goodness for Matthew Lillard!).
The story neatly fits these two worlds together, with Courage often paired with Shaggy and Scooby, and seeing Muriel with the Gang and her motherly personality fits right in with them. Eustace is his usual grumpy self and surprisingly works well when paired with Shaggy and Scoob for a while.
The sets are a treat, with plenty of nods to classic Courage villains throughout, along with music from the show. A few Scooby villains get some nice nods as well.
There's some great jokes (including a very funny song that references the title), a brilliant reference to Young Frankenstein, and the ending wraps up in a nice treat. All in all highly recommended, and it's a great way to introduce new viewers to the world of Courage (I recommend getting the box set of the Courage series, it's worth it).
Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)
Painful.
Disney really screwed the Muppets over with the newer voice actors. After firing Steve Whitmire, Gonzo is no longer paired with Rizzo but with Pepe the Prawn, and there's no chemistry between the characters. And thank goodness Kermit doesn't show up much, his voice actor is awful.
The songs aren't too bad, nice nods to the original Haunted Mansion song, too. The story is okay, it's nice that Gonzo is the main focus, and the cameos and guest stars are okay.
But overall it just feels like a cheap imitation of the Muppets. At the very least they could have gotten another voice actor closer to Whitmire's style and kept Rizzo.
Kids might like it for some family friendly fun, but for lifelong fans of the Muppets, it's a disappointment.
Tom and Jerry (2021)
Cute animated parts but the overall story is boring.
Basically comes down to con-girl trying to get away with stealing a job and oh yeah Tom and Jerry are around too, and let's toss in some totally out of place music that is completely cringe worthy.
I was really hoping this would be better.
Possessor (2020)
Visually stunning at times, but the plot falls flat.
To be honest, Possessor is a great film visually, but the story which would have worked better as a 30 minute short film, falls flat from being stretched too thin.
The gore is standard fare, close to what you might find in a slasher flick. Acting is sub par, and forgettable.
Honestly it's just another over-hyped film that can't rise to expectations.
Possum (2018)
It's got a good idea, but drags it on too long.
Possum is one of those films where the plot is so simple, a man confronting his childhood demons, that it's best fit for a short film. Instead the filmmakers stretched it too much with repeating dialog, repeating shots of scenes, making the viewer rather tired of it all by the 40 minute mark if not sooner.
The puppet design is excellent, and their are some very creepy scenes, but it's the in-between that ruins the film.
Slumber (2017)
Glaring flaws ruin this one.
While the overall premise of a sleep demon is pretty interesting, the execution is terrible. The film can't decide whether to follow Alice's story, or the family's story and it bounces between the two. To be honest I don't recommend this one at all.
The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017)
Has some funny moments, but falls flat fast.
Honestly feels like they were trying too hard with this one, we're given a live action opening which feels like a forced nod to the first film.
The constant use of songs throughout the film is distracting and feels out of place. And I like cats, but don't get me started on the cat scene which had terrible animation.
The whole theme of Lloyd and his problems being Garmadon's son are over used and rather weak as far as a plot point.
Glad I waited to see this on dvd rental.
The Borderlands (2013)
Surprisingly not bad.
While Final Prayer can be slow at times, the overall atmosphere is very unsettling, the acting actually decent, and the ending, well, just give the film a chance. Fans of Lovecraft will enjoy this one.
