The Witcher (2019– )

Bring back Geralt as a character (with the writing) and bring back Cavill.
30 July 2023
I can see why Cavill no longer wishes to play Geralt. The main approach of the books is that Geralt is always in his own head philosophizing about things. This show seems to have him almost as a side character only there to be brooding and to make monster kills. Kills that do not stick to the lore I might add: His choice of two swords is not staying correct for killing with silver, for example. There is a lot missing for a show like this.

The writing is steadily going downhill, the story is being slow rolled at parts and character development is lacking. The true story is being lost. I started with this show being an 8 and now I think it is a 6 making my rating currently a 7. This represents being worth watching for me but only just barely.

If the course continues this way and the writing still sucks when Hemsworth replaces Cavill in season 4, I'll stop bothering to watch this show.

Actually a very interesting sci-fi story
14 January 2023
Just happened to watch this because I like sci-fi and thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did because it was surprisingly good. The story evolves from talk of comets to them realizing things are not as they seem because of the one over their heads.

The ending was really great too with a fascinating (but still slight cliff hanger) thought of "what really happened?"

The acting was decent, the lines were not cheesy and it is actually a solid 8 for being a budge film without any real special effects necessary. Just know that this is a largely dialogue sci-fi drama.

I can say that there is one thing that threw me off a little which is the camera work, particularly at certain points. The shaky hand held (non-stabilized) gorilla film style doesn't sit well with me and at times can be a little dizzying.

Overall, watch it you won't be disappointed.

Terrible sound, particularly near the end!
26 December 2022
The movie might have been okay except we couldn't hear over the music. Particularly near the end it was impossible to hear what any character was saying. It was a silly movie for sure but there is no way that a sound person should completely ruin a movie like this. When you watch it until the end and then it gets really bad it actually makes you mad that you wasted your time watching the first part. It was almost to the point that it must have been sabotage by the sound person or complete incompetence. Either way don't bother wasting your time with this movie, it sucks. Overacting and silly lines are often forgivable with a lower budget movie but the sound made it completely unwatchable. Keep in mind I cannot give it a zero or I would.

Until Dawn (2015 Video Game)

Just okay. Suffered some issues.
30 June 2022
Decent game but really didnt appreciate having to have unskipable recaps at the start of every chapter. This should have had a skip option particularly for replayability. Also whoever decided that a double barrel shotgun could shoot a lot of ammo without reloading, truly made those sections of the game seem dumb. This and the Dr. Hill scenes took me out of the game and ruined immersion.

Terrible Everything...
30 May 2022
I wanted to like this movie but it was another predictable and poorly acted, crappy plot waste of time. The real world part of the justice system and how it works (or doesn't) is always way off in scripts. Regardless of these failings, the music always cranked up when we had whisper level dialogue making hearing what was being said next to impossible. Way to make a dud of a movie as one of Bruce Willis' last.

The best action movie of ALL TIME!
28 May 2022
I frickin' love this movie! I have maybe a half dozen movies or shows that I've ever given a 10 star rating and this is definitely one my favorite movies of all time.

As an avid movie watcher, this one has it all...a great well-written story, phenomenal action scenes, laugh out loud moments, tear inducing scenes, excellent acting and fantastic music. It was very easy in the theater to get deep into the story and feel the tension of the situations and characters. It's a true masterpiece.

I'd take the opportunity to see this in the theaters because I don't think any average TV will do it justice. I'll likely see it in the theater a second time and I've never done that with any other movie. If you don't watch this movie (and in the theater) you are truly going to miss out.

I feel like I wasted 3 hours of my life watching this movie and it was only an hour and a half long.
25 May 2022
Whitney Cummings seems to have tried acting but I don't know what to think about the rest of this movie and cast. This is dumber than dumb. The story is all about a man-child that can't seem to do anything without extensive help from friends or assistants. I guess it is supposed to be the successful Hollywood stoner and the troubles he would go through because he is a pampered idiot. I'd give this movie a .5 if I could.

There is a lot wrong with the time travel and physics...
14 March 2022
I'll just say that a time paradox is not something the writers seem to understand. Add that to a truck that gets flipped from explosives which magically stops forward momentum + a 12 y.o. Not getting thrown around and seriously hurt inside a jet doing flips and rolls AND you have a movie that loses my attention and borders on absurd. It was a nice try but they really got some things noticeably wrong which takes anyone paying attention out of the "moment."

There is a lot going on but a gripping story.
27 June 2019
I will write a spoiler free and simple review. I'm not typically a fan of cowboy or ranching related shows and at first glance this would seem to be another attempt at a "western" with the struggles of the hard work staying afloat in a physically demanding cattle ranching business. Boy was I wrong and I'm so glad I gave this show a chance. It draws you in right from the start as the crazy twists and turns and events lead you deeper in to a wide cast of characters all with their own struggles and concerns with power, family, personal demons, relationships, and legal/criminal challenges. I've come to really respect the story around the Duttons and their fight to save their ranch and keep the family from failing. The acting, script, scenes, and tempo is nearly perfect. Awesome show. A must see!

Magnum P.I. (2018–2024)
7/10
Meh...
23 March 2019
I don't know what to think on this one. It's watchable but nothing like the charm of the original. No inner voice. None of the same bickering back and forth with Higgins (now their can be love interest here too...ugh). It's such a completely different take that I watch it with the idea that it is a whole new show and not a reboot otherwise it becomes laughably silly by comparison.

It doesn't take itself seriously and slow enough at some parts and even a few things ignore common sense in their implementation. Magnum jumps from a car going off a cliff to a helicopter like it is another day at the Fast and Furious office.

The background stories are rushed and crammed into the story. I dont feel the charm of Magnum as it seems they are making him a sensitive playboy worrying about money where the original didn't feel so disconnected like that. The original had us riding along and hearing the inner voice leading us toward a solution as Magnum also was learning the clues.

This probably should have been just a whole new series instead of a reboot and I feel it won't be long to the chopping block.

I really wanted to like this but...
22 March 2019
Wow this seems to go off track. The silly half hearted attempt at teasing at a building relationship between the two leads is stupid dumb. How far is that supposed to take us with lame spy stories laced into it? One lead is supposed to be too butt hurt from a recent relationship breakup (involving his FBI boss cheating with his fiance of all things) to act professional while the other seems to be a contract killer (because those make the best CIA spies dont ya know) that likes to screw tattooed badguys just to get unnecessary information. The story of the broken unprofessional FBI spy slowly wooing the cold mercenary CIA hoebag is NOT interesting! The story is lame, accents break from time to time, cheeky content is presented terribly (crammed in it almost seems) and who can stand seeing so much makeup boldly showing on male actors. Pass this up and either go watch a spy focused show or a non-spy romantic comedy as this misses in every direction.

Cancel this terrible turd!
27 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Just cancel it already. As a long term fan of every part of Star Trek I was sorely dissatisfied with everything from the look of the tech (for the time period) to the costumes for the Klingons. Terrible story, writing, acting, costumes (the only way to describe Halloween attire), and premise for a story. I hate everything about this and then it is only on CBS with paying to watch? The cast then takes a knee to get political so we have stars and athletes now trying to smack veterans in the face! I'll never even give this another chance and hope it's off the air soon!

The Last of Us (2013 Video Game)
1/10
Hopefully you'll read this and get past the other hype!
19 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
*I'm warning about story spoilers once again!* Well here we are engulfed in a sea of hype about how great this game is. From the beginning it was clear the game is loved by reviewers and they love the characters. So be it. Read this if you care.

Before I go any further, I'm just going to say that I don't even feel like tackling the deep corners of this game to mention and nitpick what is wrong with it. There is a lot. I'll only say that I'm a lifelong gamer with 40 years of gaming under my belt. I know what I enjoy and what also takes away from my experience so here goes...

First, the story starts out great. Wonderfully done opening "movie" and info about Joel and his daughter. It is a real tear-jerker of an entrance. Then the game begins... Let me just say if you think the story is fulfilling and wonderfully done throughout then wait until you are all the way done with it. Ask yourself if you really have an understanding of Ellie and her background. Ask yourself if you think Joel is a good guy and had a reason to kill INNOCENT people like doctors trying to help save the world. Ask yourself if the events with his daughter decades before makes any sense to his acting the way he does with Ellie. What do you think of the canned pipeline story with no way possible to make ALTERNATE DECISIONS? Anything earth changing, unique, or even legitimately surprising with the story other than how much of a true scumbag Joel is in his desire to protect her? I even believe Ellie would (if she knew) probably escape him and try to do the right thing. I find the whole middle and end of the story missing or silly as hell.

Now let's look at what kind of game we are in here. Survival in a zombie apocalypse. No don't tell me it wasn't zombies either. The fact that it wasn't spread by being bitten and instead was from airborne fungus (which should make it even more contagious) was a ridiculous stretch that ruins the game even more. A completely stupid premise in what can only be an attempt to be different.

Combat is a system where you are supposed to worry about resources more and expect to "craft" items to help you. All items instead had silly limits on usage and capacity that made this overly stupid and completely ruined the game. You hit someone with a crowbar and only get a very limited number of strikes before the crowbar breaks? Really? A crowbar? The same usage amount for each crowbar too? They're this brittle and weak but bottles and bricks can still be effective? Let's turn to something like a handgun. Wait, I know you have a backpack Joel and probably would want to fill every crack of your ass with ammo if you had any kind of choice but we are going to make you have full ammo at 20 rounds! Ridiculous! Hell, I'd certainly find a way to carry more bullets if in such circumstance.

Gameplay again hit me as something wholly unique...in its problems. No jump button, no lying down under stuff, and climbing to any place was only where the game intended you climb to continue your path. The controls were "clunky" and I can not believe the outrageous look of Joel's knees out in front of you whenever you were crouched and crouch walking! Truly look at it sometime in video or game play. At first I laughed but then it became a huge silly on screen indication of the unrealistic feel and numerous issues that constantly remove you from the fantasy they are trying to build in any game.

The Artificial Intelligence of the enemies and even Ellie were the worst I've every seen in any game. I can't tell you how many times an enemy stood in front of me, looking at me, with Ellie standing highly visible (sometimes glitched inside them and even me) only for them to not see me, not see her, not react anywhere near a fun or realistic way. How can they make a game where Ellie can't be responsible for coordinating an attack with you, carrying that extra ammo (for you to ask for anytime), or at least be asked or expected to stop and wait safely? Instead she nearly always will walk headlong into enemies only to stand in the wide open while glitching inside of objects.

The opening movie was good. The game play and follow through with everything else was terrible. This game is an average game at best, believe it.

Destiny (2014 Video Game)

Not a title worth playing in the long run
18 January 2015
Initially the story and graphics of this game are very appealing. The quality of the fighting and the experience using weapons with visuals are indeed fantastic. The basis for a fantastic game is here with strong roots in great gameplay.

This being said, it will quickly fall short as a title you'll want to keep playing. The hype that came with this game was so above and beyond what actually is there in story and content that it is a smack in the face for strong regular gamers that play many hours on their games.

You see there is no real end goal except collecting guns and armor. The armor has a light (armor) rating that will have you chasing after the best stuff anywhere and everywhere you can find it. In order to do this you'll need to play some of the harder missions. Regardless of your level though you'll find the game will alter enemies to be just a bit stronger than you rendering your actual armor level nearly worthless. You can play a mission over and over again at any level you like and it is pretty much the same challenges with only slight differences in enemies.

The mission rewards...terrible. The grind of doing the same missions over and over to upgrade armor and weapons makes this game boring fast. Couple this with the weapon and armor drops being random (regardless of how many times you do it or how well you perform) and you often find you are doing these same missions many many many more times only to get not much of anything.

Each DLC released is destined to have you virtually reset to an equal level as others due to the availability of high level armor and weapons released with the new content. You could grind daily for months and when the next DLC releases you might as well be starting over.

PVP. Well it can be fun if you are into using a few select weapons that get the job done. Again rewards are virtually none existent, random, and nearly always all but worthless.

The plot of the game...not there. You just show up in the game and nowhere do you get any real in game information that amounts to anything understandable or cohesive. It is simply a bunch of aliens attacking various planets...go fight them! Matchmaking with others is not available in many important areas of the game. You have to have friends ready and willing to play the hardest challenges with you and then rely on them all to be on during the same large block of hours, have good weapons, a good connection to even hope to get a majority capable of chatting, and be of sufficient level to hopefully participate. The discussion of strategy is usually pointless because bugs and game glitches will repeatedly sink your "team" progress more than anything else. The "raid" (the hardest and supposedly most rewarding part of the game) is often a nightmare for most players in that people leave out of frustration. The "average" player is simply not likely to have fun here and you must expect all participants to be well armed, ranked up, and highly skilled to get close to having any success.

To sum it up...it's pretty, shooting is done well and smooth. The graphics are great. The races and back end thought in setup of planets is fantastic. But ultimately a little kid could just mindlessly get on and blast stuff and have fun for a few hours a week and this is the best use for the game right now. It seems to me to be a beta waiting for the story and vast interactive gaming (with true teams of friends) still needing to be developed. As I've heard said many times "style over substance".
