Hillary Swank, Great scenery and a current topic
7 October 2022
Just watched the pilot and will definitely watch more. The series places a disgraced investigative journalist at a small local newspaper in Alaska. At first I thought it was going to be a bit trite, but when I saw that Hilary Swank heads the cast, I thought I'd check it out. She doesn't disappoint. And the basis of the Missing and Murdered Indiginous Women shines a light on a current topic that has largely been overlooked. I know people will criticize the abrasiveness of Hilary's character, but I kind of like it. So glad the boss is not the stereoptypical man, or the too-nice woman. Also, there a lot of characters that can be developed. There is some room to grow, but Looking forward to the next episodes. Hope the writing doesn't take a wrong turn and stays original.

Captures the spirit of the book
16 July 2022
Movies can never give you all the details and depth that a book can. But some movies really miss what the book was really about. That is not the case with this gentle movie about a woman who needs to find herself and her place in the world. The true spirit if the book is captured, the casting is spot on. I was busy doing something, so thought I would watch only a little since it required reading subtitles. But before I knew it, I had stopped everything else and totally focused on the movie. Just like a good book that you can't put down.

A gentle way to look at grief and depression
13 October 2021
Melissa McCarthy, Chris ODowd and Kevin Kline are perfectly cast to add a touch of humor, and the acting chops to carry off the depth of what grief and depression can do to relationships. This is done without a lot of schmaltz or cliches, the blend of anger, sadness and helplessness are really well done, without preaching and with the hard edges softened with just enough humor to soften it, Is it the best movie ever? No? But I think this movie will resonate with those that have dealt with different aspects of heartbreak and depression. I think that's why there is such a wide range of ratings.

Fringe wannabe
2 March 2021
Reminded me of Fringe, but not quite as good. A couple of parts were a bit confusing. But, it's an interesting premise, and not fair to judge after only 1 episode. Giving it a solid 7 for originality, and will wait and see how it goes.

Not as good as I'd hoped.
25 February 2021
Maybe we had high expectations because of the cast and the concept. However, the humor felt forced and jokes fell flat. Possibly everything was a bit too scripted. Possibly it didn't work because of the Zoom format (necessary I know). It all seemed more suited to a 15 minute YouTube video. Makes me sad, hopefully they'll fix what didn't work. I'd love to see this succeed.

Original script, great acting!
30 December 2020
This series is the perfect blend of mystery, drama, comedy and originality set on the platform of alcoholic blackouts. The writing is great, and the acting is so good. Each character is so well cast that they all stand out, yet blend so well together. I have to say that at first I thought it was a little weird, but the use of hallucinations is masterful in revealing so many aspects of the story and Cassie's character. Each episode builds on the last and gets stronger, so it keeps your interest. There were times I disliked Cassie, which means that Kelly Cuoco's acting was nothing short of amazing. I understand that there is a second season coming. Can't wait.

So disappointed
30 December 2020
Not sure if it's fair to write a review if you couldn't finish watching the movie. I am one of those people that can't leave a book unread, or a movie unwatched. But in this case, I made it exactly 45 minutes in and could not handle the cliches, bad dialogue, bad acting, etc. I am really glad I watched the first Wonder Woman before attempting this. I will say the opening scenes are not bad. Robin Wright is so good, no matter what she does.

More action, less talking
22 May 2020
Hilarious concept which actually makes me laugh, andd then the commentators start talking. Need more like 80/20 play talk action. In fact get rid of the commentators all together.

Great adaptation of the book
9 May 2020
I try to make it a habit of reading a book before watching the movie adaptation. Most times I'm really disappointed. But this is one of the better book to movie adaptations I've seen. Of course there is much more depth and detailing in the book, but the movie did a great job of respecting the original work and was true to the story. The movie is well cast. I even liked Kevin Costner as the voice since Enzo is supposed to be narrating his life story when he is old. Overall, a good movie. Have your hanky ready!

Mind boggling
1 May 2020
3 things make this movie great:

  • it's really well done; acting, writing, plot, are all first class. The story hooks you pretty quickly and reels you right in.
  • it's based on a story by Robert Heinlein, one of the best, if not the best SF writer of all times, if you are familiar with his work, you know what I'm saying
-it is thought provoking and most likely you'll watch it a second time

Not sure how I missed this, but really glad I found it!

Knowledge of actual events is what makes this movie
18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is by far neither the worst, or the best movie ever. But I think knowing the true story of Sharon Tate and Charles Manson creates a different experience when watching this move. I kept waiting for something terrible to happen at the ranch. Tarantino is genius at creating that type of tension. But if you aren't familiar with Charles Manson and his followers, you would have no context of how deranged they were. As far as the ending, well the title of the movie tells you this is a fairy tale. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how Tarantino was going to deal with the murders. The turn of events was so surprising, and so satisfying that I found myself cheering on that dog, and finally, seeing Sharon in the final scene was a bit gut wrenchingly sad as to what might have been.

I had no trouble watching this movie for almost 3 hours.

Beautiful movie about friendship, love and sacrifice
13 March 2020
When you're craving a rainy day, curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea and a box of Kleenex kind of movie, this is one to watch. Beautiful scenery, beautiful acting and a heart breakingly poignant love story, Don't be deceived though, this is not a shallow movie. There are so many issues that women dealt with in the 1950's . Things that are accepted so easily today caused great sacrifices and difficult decisions back then. It made me think about my mother and grandmother. Great movie to discuss with friends.

What happened?
12 January 2020
Like everyone else, we thought seasons 1 & 2 were great. Excited to see season 3 come out. And then And then we watched it. Episode 1 started strong, but spiraled downward into weirdness that was hard to watch. But, loving Billy Bob Thornton, we ventured into episode 2. And yes, the weirdness continues starting with the crazy ad shown in the beginning. But somehow, this episode goes from weird to boring. The story line somehow gets lost amongst insane characters and psychedelic scenes that have no point. 5 minutes of content and 55 minutes of garbage. I think we're going to skip this season.

Should be great....

Love Alan Cummings, love Whoopi Goldberg, love James Patterson's writing, so all the ingredients are there. But somehow the show just falls flat. No chemistry and boring plot. Not a hater, just had such higher expectations.
