Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
It didn't feel like a Tarantino film.
For starters I have been a fan of Quentin's for many years, I have seen everything from Reservoir Dogs to The Hateful Eight. All of his movies (including what he wrote but didn't direct) were great for one reason or another but this film, his 9th film felt more like someone was trying to do a Quentin Tarantino inspired movie, not an actual Quentin Tarantino film. Long, drawn out scenes of dialogue, obvious "feet" scenes that felt forced and almost done in a joking way. Everyone who knows his movies knows theres always some scene with women's feet but this felt forced. Maybe he was forced to change scenes, edit this, edit that or even had limited time to give us what he gave us. I don't know but it just didn't feel like his work we all know.
The Bruce Lee controversy, I am a big fan of Bruce's and I can understand why Shannon, his daughter is so upset. While yes this is just a movie, when you are using real life people as characters in your story it would be wise to have respect (and show it) for said people, especially because they have passed on.
As for the movie as a whole, it just didn't move me as his other movies did. The fact that this has an 8 star review is very strange to me. I thought it was kind of boring, very little action and excitement. Too much dialogue and not enough action, every single one of his movies you can point out an epic scene with this movie though not much comes to mind except for when Brad Pitt goes up against Mike Moh as Bruce Lee (and for the wrong reasons) I feel like this was a missed opportunity. I give this 5 stars only because most of the acting was great, the imagery was wonderful and the soundtrack was brilliant. I wish I could say that I would watch this again but the only way that would happen is if theres a secret directors cut with more action and interesting scenes in it otherwise I have to pass.
Cabin Fever (2016)
Oh my God, what the F is this?
I have seen the original Cabin Fever many times as it is one of my favorite newer horror films. I only watched this out of boredom and I knew this wasn't going to be an excellent film but my low expectations were not low enough! For starters the acting is flat, boring and disconnected. I can not believe that these five people are friends, as another reviewer said already its like they were all in a different movie. The delivery of dialogue from everyone was pretty bad, from the hicks in town to the five friends in the cabin. If you set someone with a flesh eating disease who tried breaking into your car and you set him on fire, would you be acting calm? I know I wouldn't be but the five friends seemed a little too calm and content for everything that was happening in this film.
Another issue I had was it was almost word for word, I know the original script was used but why? Why remake anything and have it the same but worse?
Deputy Winston was pretty flat, not funny or memorable at all unlike the original. Then again no one was giving it their all while acting in this film.
The only thing I liked was the special effects, very disgusting and cool. Thats pretty sad that the only thing interesting about this film was the special effects. Just skip this movie, it was very boring and not entertaining except for the purpose of making fun of it.
It (2017)
So much potential and hype but one of the biggest let downs in horror history!
As a horror film fanatic, I was looking forward to this movie thanks to the trailers and a brilliant marketing ploy; Pennywise returns every 27 years and the original film was released in 1990 as this remake marked the 27th anniversary of the original film. How brilliant. Watching the film in theaters I was very impressed with the Georige scene as it gave me hope this movie was going to be badass. I was wrong. I felt there was too much editing, not enough character development and awkward uses of cgi. There would be an awesome scene but its cut short! I don't understand why this film has gotten so much praise and great reviews. I think the fan girls of Bill (Pennywise) are to blame for the success because honestly if you take "the hot guy" as Pennywise away you still have a boring film. Honestly fans who love this movie can you give me examples as to why you love this film (and not because Bill is hot) I will say that the kids in the film were great actors it would have been nice to see them reach their full potential but their scenes were too short. I won't watch the sequel and I will only give this film a second glance if there is an uncut version out there. Hollywood; enough with the cgi, the remakes and the fear of truly terrifying people! This could have been a great horror film but it was a bore.
Terrifier (2016)
An awesome nod to 80s horror!
This is a great new horror film, let me start off by saying that. I did watch "All Hallows Eve" and it wasn't terrible but it wasn't the best. It was lacking in some parts for example the costumes. Seeing the trailer for this movie though made me want to see this. Clowns do not scare me, I find nothing scary about them at all however this villain; Art the clown makes me rethink that thought. This clown was brilliant. He does not speak; he only moves in a comedic yet creepy way. He is like the Michael Myers of killer clowns. The actions are all you get; no silly lines or catch phrases. So bravo to this new movie villain! The acting was pretty good, the special effects were awesome (no CGI that I despise) and overall a great story. A basic story idea that is something out of the 80s slasher universe but maybe thats something us horror fans have been waiting for? This is a breath of fresh air from all the garbage remakes and unoriginal horror films out there now. This movie will make any horror fan scream for joy as it is original, weird at times and never boring. There are many nods to various horror films of the past (from Halloween to Silence Of The Lambs) Its bloody and creepy. Two thumbs up from this horror fanatic!
Srpski film (2010)
An interesting watch, the most disturbing movie ever though? Maybe
For about two years I contemplated watching this movie. I read dozens of reviews for this. People called this disgusting, messed up, and the most disturbing movie ever made. I was intrigued. I have been watching horror movies since I was three or four and have seen everything. All the great slasher flicks, exploitation and Asian horror films I could get my hands on for 22 years. (Im 25) Then I read about this movie. Newborn porn?? Decapitation and necrophilia?? Incest too??? What the hell I thought. The only reason I was hesitating to watch this was because of the "newborn porn" scene. However after checking out movie stills and knowing since I was a kid that movies are fake I figured; I should watch this. My sister was more hesitant to watch though. We finally sat down and watched it. Its not a bad film at all. We both enjoyed it and even said to each other; "this is the most disturbing movie of all time?!" If anything we felt this movie was painted by some reviewers to be more messed up than it really is. Frankly, this to me was like "I Spit On Your Grave" and "Last House On The Left" times five! This isn't garbage. The acting was great, the story was messed up but sadly believable and the effects were a solid ten in my book. This is not a movie though, I would recommend to someone who hasn't seen much horror and exploitation movies. I think someone who watches comedy, action or romance mostly should stay clear from this! I wasn't disturbed but hey I have watched thousands of horror movies for two decades! Watch at your own risk newbies to horror and exploitation. Is this the most disturbing movie of all time? I would say its close. I would put this in the top five list of my favorite exploitation films along with; "Cannibal Holocaust," "Last House On The Left," "Martyrs," and "I Spit On Your Grave."
Suck (2009)
Rock n roll, vampires and laughs!
I love a good horror film but this is more than just another horror movie. I dig vampire movies (when done right) and this was excellent in my book! The characters were funny, real and fun to watch. No one in this movie bored me. The band "The Winners" in this movie is amazing. I wish they were real. There's plenty of awesome cameos like The Godfather of punk himself; Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and even Henry Rollins. Besides loving horror movies I also love rock music and comedy and this movie hit all the nails on the head. Malcolm McDowell was great of course in this as the vampire hunter. I loved everything about this film, the actors and actresses, the plot and the soundtrack. Its a different kind of vampire movie unlike Lost Boys or Fright Night (both are great BTW) this had a different but great vibe! Its very fast paced so you wont be bored. I also liked how this movie has many "nods" to famous rock albums. If you like horror, comedy or rock music you should watch this. Its not too gory for those who are grossed out by horror movies so non horror lovers can watch this with no problem. I hope there is a sequel one day soon.
Simon Says (2006)
Comedy? Slasher? I don't get it...
I decided to watch this one night when nothing was on. The description made the movie sound interesting and the fact that Crispin Glover was in it made me want to watch it. It at first seemed just OK but as it kept going I was actually becoming bored. I don't mind that the same ideas keep being used when it comes to the horror genre but when there isn't one character I can relate to or "root for" I have to say the movie failed. To me, one element that makes a good horror or slasher film is having that one character (hero or heroine) to cheer for. When its a bunch of idiots and unlikeable characters its a waste of time. Fans of horror know what Im talking about (The Halloween series always comes to mind when it comes to the heroine that is needed) Maybe it was bad acting and bad writing that made this terrible? I would say to a die hard horror fan (like me who has seen almost every horror/slasher film known to man) to skip this movie. I will say though Crispin as always delivered a fantastic performance its just a shame no one else delivered a great performance and that the script fell flat.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
michael bay needs to be stopped, stop ruining horror!!!
where do i begin? at the start of the film i was hopeful because it was very gruesome, kellan lutz stabs himself in the throat even though hes sleeping and we as the audience knows freddy did it. then it just got awful. the lines freddy (jackie earl haley) says are absolute awful ripoffs of what freddy (robert englund) always said throughout the original series. to make it worse though, im pretty sure jackie was not wearing makeup but they used CGI for his burnt face. im tired of CGI im sorry but you can tell its fake. most of the acting was good but and i cant stress this enough when it comes to movies, i couldn't believe most of them. i need to be convinced of whats going on and i need to feel sorry for the victims. this didn't really happen in this movie. then again i don't expect anything but bullshit from michael bay, remake after bad CGI and bad acting remake! how this man has a career is unbeknownst to me. the only thing i liked about this movie was that freddy had a messed up back story, he WAS a child molester and abuser and the parents killed him. in the original he was a child murderer who got off and the parents killed him in revenge. so i say good job for coming up with an original and screwed up idea for the killers back story but everything else is a thumbs down. watch the original movies with a GREAT actor!
Brain Dead (1990)
amazing movie that made me think and go crazy!
i originally wanted to see this film for Bill Pullman and Bud Cort and i got way more out of it than expected. this movie is a mind f*** and you really have to pay attention to every little detail and be somewhat nuts to understand this from my point of view but ill give it my best shot. Bill Pullman plays a brain doctor along with Bill Paxton who experiment on Bud Cort who killed his family. After performing this test on Bud Cort, Bill Pullman is hit by a car and then things get weird. He wakes up but nothing is how it is supposed to be, he is no longer the brilliant doctor he was before getting hit by the car, he is now being called by Bud Cort's characters name (Halsey) and is now a patient. He tries to escape with the help of Bud Cort. Heres the metaphor to look for, when Bill is running around the hospital trying to find his way out he is, in a way running through his own mind. So who's mind is this exactly..is this Bud Cort's brain or Bill Pullman's brain? we find that out in the end which i wont say but its genius. I've always wondered about the human brain and this movie made me wonder (even more) just exactly what goes on in our brains when we are unconscious? when we die does the brain still work? is what we are seeing now and doing now really happening or is this all a dream? this movie really made me ask these questions more and it freaked my sister out! i say bravo to the director, writer and of course Bill Pullman and Bud Cort for f***ing with my mind!
Bride of Chucky (1998)
my favorite romance film
i loved chucky growing up. this movie came out when i was seven and i desperately wanted to see it. sadly i didn't see it until i was nine and since then it has been the greatest love story I've ever seen (im some what joking but im not the chick flick type) this movie has it all: blood, love and doll sex. when the second scene includes a hot busty blond (Tiffany played by Jennifer Tilly) killing to get her lover back (as a chopped up doll) and rob zombie's song "living dead girl" is playing you know you're in for a good time! this movie is very comical thats why im being a smart ass in this review. this film also has lots of wtf moments, chucky and tiffany (as dolls) killing John Ritter in the van with nails so he looks like Pinhead, the dolls having sex and then of course the end which to me as a young child was gross, and the tiffany doll giving birth to a baby. its a hilarious and sick movie. great actors, awesome soundtrack, and enough blood for the horror fans who need a movie to be gruesome. a great film for any Chucky fan, weird horror fans or anyone who needs a laugh. its romance at its nastiest form! two thumbs up!
Saw IV (2007)
Jigsaw is dead but....
Jigsaw is dead but the game isn't over. this is the sequel that introduces us to detective mark Hoffman (the very sexy costas mandylor) he along with Donnie Wahlberg are being held captive by Jigsaw's ex wife's lawyer in a new game. however these movies always have a twist, detective Hoffman is in on it. he worked with jigsaw and was never "tested" Hoffman walks away as the hero. what i liked about this movie and all of the Saw movies is all the twists and secrets. it has some cool deaths, my favorite is the wife and abusive husband who are attached to each other with the arrows through them and the wife has to pull them out to save herself (for once) and kill her husband. these movies really make you think about what you do in life and what it really means to you. redemption is a word that comes to mind when watching these movies, especially this one.
Bates Motel (2013)
as a true Psycho fan, i salute this series!
Psycho is my favorite film of all time and when i heard A&E was making a prequel TV show about it i didn't know what to think. for those who remember or had ever watched Bates Motel (1987) that didn't work out so well... this however was incredible! i have been watching it since it aired in 2013 and i see with each passing episode Freddie Highmore (Norman Bates) becoming more and more like Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates, Psycho) everything Freddie does is perfect in this. he is so insane and his love for his mother (Vera Farmiga) is downright creepy and sometimes wrong. no grown boy sleeps with his mother or thinks about her sexually. in the original Psycho movies incest was always suggested and this pays homage to that. this show pays homage to the movie in many ways. the only thing that bugs me is that its modern day, i let that pass but i am worried this will open a door so someone (hopefully not michael bay) will reboot Psycho. i hope that doesn't happen i do hope this series goes on right up to when Norman kills his mother though. anyone who loves Psycho should be watching this, its very suspenseful and gets crazier with each episode!
Saw (2004)
a newer horror film that impressed me
i wasn't going to ever watch any of the Saw movies as i was told they were nothing but "torture porn" and how ridiculous they were. i watched them anyway and im glad i did! Saw is something very different, i am a fan of 70s and 80s horror strictly but have made exceptions for Scream and a couple select other films so i wasn't sure how id feel about this movie. it was awesome! two strangers wake up, each has an ankle chained to a pipe in this nasty bathroom with what appears to be a dead body (later to be revealed as Jigsaw/john kramer himself!) they at first don't know why they are there but as the movie goes on secrets are revealed through cassette tapes and pictures. its a bloody movie with an excellent plot and lesson for all, appreciate life and those in it and how far would you go to survive? two lessons most people don't get. the actors were all great and the sets were perfect! no complaints!
Out of the Dark (1988)
80s horror is always awesome!
this is your typical 80s horror film. a serial killer wearing a clown mask kills women who work at a phone sex operating office, only an 80s horror film can get away with this i think now people just want "torture porn" this isn't that. this had the suspense i always look for in horror movies, who is the killer? there are three good suspects for that question and i love a good guessing game. the acting was very good, no one was too over the top or unbelievable. i give this a seven because the actors were great, it was funny as it was suspenseful, and you can never go wrong with a killer clown! for pop culture and horror fanatics like me there are some greats to look for: Karen Black who runs the operating service, Divine as the detective who is looking for a killer with the same MO as the killer Bobo the clown and Bud Cort as the weirdo who works downstairs from the phone sex service (we are also supposed to believe he is the killer) its a cool and funny horror film for anyone who wants something that doesn't need a lot of blood and guts for enjoyment watch this!
Psycho (1960)
the "horror" movie that changed everything!
i first watched this movie when i was nine years old and what stuck with me at that young age was the infamous shower scene. as i grew older (im 23 now) i appreciated the movie on many different levels. the first thing i will say is because of this well acted, well directed and nerve wracking film the horror movie genre was changed for the better. before Hitchcock came around there were horror monsters like Dracula and The Wolfman. Psycho gives us a look at a real threat, an average good looking man. Because of this movie that "showed" a woman being stabbed to death we now have all these other horror films from Friday the 13th to Saw. Psycho is the reason horror is what it is today. Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates was absolutely fantastic! He is cute yet downright insane, something even today most people would look past. we have always wanted to believe that a killer looks gross, crazy or evil not good looking and Anthony Perkins gave us that. The ending is perhaps the greatest in horror history. when Vera miles finds the corpse of Mrs. bates in the cellar and Anthony Perkins appears dressed as his dead mother with a knife.. awesome! words really cant describe this movie, it is so much more than brilliant. it is technically the first slasher film and with good reason, you have mystery, murder and insanity! anyone who appreciates good horror and mystery should watch this, the acting is genuine, you really feel for the victim (janet leigh) and Norman Bates which is hard to do. Psycho makes you feel sorry for the killer as much as the victim. Bravo Mr. Hitchcock!
Bates Motel (1987)
oh my...
I am only giving this a 2 because of Bud Cort who did a great job at playing a character that I felt sympathy for. (Which is hard to come by especially now) From the start of this I knew there would be issues. As soon as the credits are done rolling we are shown the front of the courthouse in black and white and at the bottom of the screen we see ''Fairville'' any fan of ''Psycho'' knows the town is Fairvale. Fairville sounds like a game we would be playing on face book. Then we are told a story of a little boy named Alex who is befriended by Norman Bates. Norman Bates from ''Psycho'' alone is shown as a loner. I say it like that because we are supposed to forget about ''Psycho 2'' and ''Psycho 3'' but any true fan can't do that. So these two become friends and skip ahead to the present, Norman has died and left his property to Alex. Alex to me is such a quiet and timid character I couldn't help but feel bad for him, his friend has died and not only does he get the Bates motel and the house he even gets Norman's ashes, which he talks to. I found that to be silly. The rest of the movie goes on as a long joke, Lori Petty plays a girl who has been sleeping in the abandoned home that was once Norman's and now is ''forced'' to mingle with Alex. I say forced because anyone would just kick a wacky girl who dresses as a chicken for work, out of the house! It was a slow movie with silly elements and a ''scooby doo'' ending. Any true fan of the ''Psycho'' franchise should avoid this. I only watched it because it was the only ''Psycho'' thing I had not watched. Want to watch something good related to ''Psycho'' then watch ''Bates Motel'' on the A&E channel. Skip this!!!
