Marrakech Express (1989)
An enjoyable on the road movie
Marrakech Express is the kind of movie you watch to pass time. It does not demand effort watching it. Its bigger qualities are the music, simply amazing from Dalla to DeGregori; and the sense of the journey.
It is as typical on the road movie in which you do not care about reaching the end but about what you feel while traveling. This is enhanced by the fact that their hopes, and expectations upon the arrival in Marrakech are shuttered. It is all about the journey. Most importantly, Salvatores appeals to a large public by setting up some topos, especially for Italian viewers. Everyone, has good memories of highschool friends, and everyone lost contact to them through the years. Salvatores imagines a reunion. And as said in the movies "It is like we neve separated". The characters are fairly simple and do not go through an immense development throught the movie.
On the negative side, we have pay attention to how the actors are not used to their full potential. The cast is extraordinary. In my opinion with such a ast the director could have focused more on personal development of the characters.
Overall it is a fairly simple movie about a journey and friendship, that could have been more than that.
Don't Look Up (2021)
The failed Dr. Strangelove of 22nd century
In this film, McKay wants to open our eyes to a subtle reality of our western modern society. He does so by enhancing the qualities and the defects of the character.
We can see this done before in a masterpiece such as Dr. Strangelove (1964, Kubrick). However, Kubrick's interpretation of 1960s society is more efficient because it focuses on just a few characters and one hero, who is "normal". On the flip side in Don't look up we are overwhelmed by a large number of peculiar characters. This extends the description of society to several levels. For example, the U. S president's extravagance highlights the incompetence of the government and by an extent the poor judgment of voters. Although, we also have the Bash CEO underlining capitalist monopoly, Riley Bina as a metaphor of digital consumerism, and so on. I would argue that these metaphors are too many and push us away from the story. This does not make Don't Look Up a bad movie, but simply a not extremely entertaining story, which is crucial in a society ruled by attention, as also depicted in the film.
Moreover, we should appreciate the character of Dr. Mindy and the fragile humanity he is able to convey.
In conclusion, Don't look up is a mediocre movie, an ambitious quest by McKay that did not fail nor it shine.

I guess culturally we are so used to the armageddon caused by a meteorite that unconsciously we expect something like Armageddon (1998)
