Nope (2022)
Clever concept and well acted
Everyone is entitled to an opinion and there's seemingly A LOT of opinions about this film. I don't normally submit reviews on here as I don't really use the scores to pass judgement on what I will and won't watch. However, my husband and I, we thought this was a great film and I really wanted to negate the poor scores/reviews. The idea is fantastic and the actors are brilliant. I was not expecting anything like we watched and I am still reeling from the unexpected. So, so clever in my very humble opinion! And we've not even finished watching it yet. Daniel Kaluuya is ace.
Do watch it. It's not a waste of your time.
Silent Witness (1996)
Gutted to see what this has become.
This was always a fantastic show about crime and forensics but has been going downhill over the last couple of years. Last season was ok but this latest season....absolute tosh. The script is poorly written and some key actors seem to have forgotten how to act. It appears that to be a convincing big wig copper you have to scowl and stomp your way through the day, barking your disapproval at anyone who'll listen. I'm 10 minutes into episode two and Nikki has had yet another histrionic as she gets (again) dragged into criminal activities. I'm switching off forever.
Such a shame as I used to love this programme but I'm done.
The Canterville Ghost (2021)
Meh....
As a lot of other reviewers have written, terrible accents and stereotypes, but it's ok. I like James Lance and Caroline Catz, and love Anthony Head, so intend to watch the entire thing.
However. I'm writing this review after watching the "steeplechase" plot point. The girl decides to ride bare back to beat a disqualification but actually manages to levitate over her horse. Not a ghostly experience, just the result of very poor CGI and scrubbing of the saddle the rider clearly used. Really?! You think we're that stupid or just don't care enough?!?!
It's a shame as it possibly could have been better. But worth 5/10 stars for the minimal entertainment.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
Entertaining stories
I really don't understand some of the reviews on here. I appreciate that these are people's opinions but some of the spitefulness seems so unreasonable. I tend to use another review site these days for more "realistic" opinions.
I admit I've not read Lovecraft but I liked these stories and how they were portrayed. A great cast across the series and I enjoyed the special effects. There was one episode that didn't catch my attention like the others but I found the rest really entertaining, especially over the Halloween weekend. In a time where rehashed horror and supernatural films are released a dime a dozen, this was a pleasant surprise.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Great slasher flick
I'd never heard of the books but saw the trailer and wanted to watch the trilogy as soon as they started appearing on Netflix. And I wasn't disappointed. The cast are strong and the flow of the story is gripping. I really enjoyed my time in Fear Street and am looking forward to parts 2 & 3.
As for the "reviewers" complaining about "woke culture" because the lead characters are gay......YAAAAAAAWN. There's nothing "woke" about it. Get over yourselves and get educated. This is 2021!
Cats (2019)
It's not as bad as the reviews say!
I saw Cats at the New London Theatre in the early 80s with the original cast and was blown away. Wayne Sleep even sat on my lap during one scene, I was smitten. My parents bought the gatefold vinyl and I grew up singing the songs.
So when I heard it was being made into a film I was dubious. How can you recreate the glory of a stage musical like Cats? And then it was released to such bad reviews and scorn, I really didn't know if I wanted to ruin my memory of the show.
But....it really isn't that bad. Yes, it's weird in places but I honestly don't know how they could have made it more "realistic" - it's about singing cats....
I loved hearing all the songs again and I enjoyed it. Worth a look if you are a massive fan of the show.
8ight After (2020)
Just not good
There were elements of this film that had an amount of promise but it really does deserve the low scores. The acting was poor, especially by "Christina" who runs like Louis Tully once he'd been possessed by Vinz Clortho in Ghostbusters. Meh.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
I hoped for so much more but...
As a massive fan of the original films, and seeing the cast for this latest instalment, I had high hopes. But oh dear god, it's truly horrible. I'm writing this as I watch as I don't think I can finish the film. There has been only one point where my husband and I laughed, thanks to Dennis.
