Koe no katachi (2016)
An intelligent and engaging story
Got reccomended this Youtube video with a still of a woman on a balcony at night illuminated by fireworks. Many people in the comments were talking about how beautiful and depressing the movie in question was. Since psychological drama is my favorite genre, I watched it.
Despite more relevance in recent years, I don't think too many media openly deals with the subject of depression/s-icide, and if they do, it's not in a realistic manner, so it was a new experience for me. I'm glad I watched it, it's beautifully animated and the situations presented real.
One of those great surprises that I had no idea about beforehand, and glad I know of now. If nothing more, I think the theme of hitting rock bottom and slowly, but steadily turning yourself back around is a very powerful one.
Survivor: Ready to Play Like a Lion (2021)
Complete nonsense
This just isn't the Survivor I fell in love with anymore. Gone are fascinating dynamics between people from all walks of life, instead replaced by race-based alliances. Can't wait for the Cookout 2.0!
Diversity isn't just about color, it's about viewpoints as well. And when you purposely cast only people with the same values in the name of "progress", the show suffers.
As for the merge twist, it's just unnecessarily complicated and giving way too much power to one person based on a luck of the draw. Someone's getting twist-screwed by this.
This was the first time I ever stopped watching an episode before the credits rolled, and I'm not sticking around to see the rest. I just hope Australian Survivor doesn't go full SJW too.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (2004)
Dub is great fun
I might not be your average viewer, since I didn't watch Yu-Gi-Oh as a child and found it by chance later in life through popular Youtube clips. If that sort of comedy suits you, the dub is a ton of fun. Season 3 in particular is full of meta jokes.
You have homages to the Big Lebowski, Goodfellas, the Price is Right, etc. which end up making those episodes hilarious in how over the top they are. There is still a fair share of more serious episodes towards the end.
The characters are mostly solid too. Jaden starts out a bit wide-eyed and not serious, but grows along the way and I could somewhat relate, The Chazz is a fantastic character all around, Bastion is a good comic relief for the time he is there.
Although, you also have all the issues that come with a 4Kids dub. No alcohol, no death, no partial nudity. In some cases, that censorship is really in your face (sake turned to hot sauce).
If someone's a fan of the manga or the Japanese version, I'm guessing they wouldn't be content with all the changes made here.
