Deadcon (2019)
The Potential Horrors of Social Media
Not being one to watch a lot of horror movies, I wished this film had been categorized a mystery/teen drama rather to include a wider audience.
I saw aspiring director Caryn Waechter's previous film "Sisterhood of the Night"
address the consequences of today's teenagers' addictive interaction with social media. In "Deadcon" Waechter went a step further to delve into the perils of technology and its effect on young minds.
The film moves fast with a skillful camera, and its suspense keeps the viewer at the edge of the seat, trying to make sense of it all. Unfortunately, with the sketchy storyline and the end out of nowhere, I can only give the movie a much lower rating than the talented director really deserves. Looking forward to the next one with a better script!
The Sisterhood of Night (2014)
Secrets and misunderstandings of adolescence
In my opinion, there can never be enough movies made about the conflicting years of adolescence, a period where those cute and adorable children we intend to raise into perfect and responsible adults all of a sudden start rebelling, biting the very hands that feed them. They turn into strangers, who question everything, alienating the very adults who nurtured them, causing pain and misunderstandings that tragically often outlast this brief unsettling period in our lives. The strength of this movie is the exceptional visuals, great soundtrack, excellent casting and a script adapted to the "nowness" of media influence - altogether a great film by the new promising director, Caryn Waechter.
