Jack Ryan: Ghosts (2022)

Story Arc is as if Tom Clancy wrote it except for the simple errors
28 December 2022
A Clear and Present Danger with the Cardinal of the Kremlin trying to prevent the Sum of all Fears

Overall - season 3 has been the best so far with elements of actual Tom Clancy plots to drive the story.

The writers have finally capture the intrigue and suspense that is synonymous with Jack Ryan lore unfortunately they fail to prevent the simplest of errors from occurring such as a CIA station chief calling a Navy Admiral "General".

Perhaps this is only one minor mistake but one that Tom Clancy would not have made.

Look forward to the conclusion of the season and to better attention to detail next season.

Great movie using classic plot arc
6 April 2022
Just rewatched - probably first time in 30 years. Still enjoy it and it ranks high in movies that follow the common trope of class differentiation. For the period and place this movie takes place (late 70's Indiana), it touches on the conflict between working class and the college elites in a community whose national identity is associated with the college but local pride is with the quarry. Generally these two worlds stay separate but they intersect on something accessible by both - cycling. Many seem to think this is a movie about bike riding but cycling is not nearly as highlighted as it is in Tesich's other film "American Flyers".

This is a great coming of age story about realizing your destiny is yours to create. It a great story with cycling as the backdrop.

American Flyers is another movie to see - it's the opposite in my opinion - a movie with great cycling scenes that contains a story as a backdrop.

Could've been a 8 or 9 except....
15 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A very interesting and heart-warming plot device to explore a friendship and relationship that develops over a year. Matt and Anna are two loners separated by a generation who discover they have much in common as Anna carries Matt's baby. They develop a warm and beautiful friendship but Anna starts to worry it has an expiration date after she delivers the baby. Matt meanwhile focuses on the joys of becoming a new parent not truly understanding Anna's concerns.

Sadly we are all left to wonder what happens next.

Why has no one aged in 10 years
9 December 2021
Great episode with an interesting twist in the timeline. The only real question is why is it that 10 years in the future that no one has aged - at all?

A few wrinkles and some graying hair would not have been that hard for the makeup team.

Denise Crosby's I Made A Big Mistake Episode
24 November 2021
One of the best episodes in the series and confirms that Denise Crosby should never have left the show. I am sure she realized that by guest starring in this story.

At the same time it provides a great series plot point for future story arcs and of course amazing canon for the entire franchise.

Yes - these are weird people. But they are characters in a story yet to be unfolded. We know something happens that results in Marty seeking some type of revenge nearly 30 years later. I look forward to learning what happens while I enjoy two of my favorite comedic actors perform.

Star Trek Meets First Blood
8 November 2021
Danar's story seems to follow a similar arc of Rambo in First Blood albeit without all the death and destruction.

After not being welcomed back to society, a former soldier relies on his military training and reflexes to survive in a world where they feel unwelcome.

Worth It to Just See Elton John Kick Ass
24 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps not nearly as great as the first one but entertaining nonetheless.

Having Elton John as one of the villain's hostages was quite entertaining.

Brilliant Character Development
16 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In the beginning we are introduced to the hero and his sidekick (Ted & Beard). We are led to believe the villains is a rich and powerful person or a narcissist who believe he is better than everyone else. Yet, they become the hero's allies in the endeavor of creating a great Football team.

We are also introduced to secondary characters like Nate, who has been use to being ignored but is elevated and befriended by the hero. We quickly feel empathy for Nate and see him as one who is also a hero. But the show's writers follow archetypal comic book villain creation. Taking a person who believes he has been slighted (real or perceived) by the hero and then ultimately becomes the arch-nemesis.

This is the kind of conflict usually found in epic hero stories (like Star Wars and Superman).

Kudos to the Ted Lasso team for this!

This movie is Swell
11 October 2021
As a retired Naval Officer, I am easily drawn to Navy themed films. I have always been a fan of In Harms Way and John Wayne's portrayal of a senior Naval Officer given second chances. This movie is like Wayne's later film in that it depicts the reality of war and the risks associated with being in harms way - that the heroes are flawed and do make mistakes.

It was interesting to see John Wayne's Rusty and notice the similarities to his later role as Rock in In Harms Way.

Though John Ford had the experience of filming the actual war as a Public Affairs Officer in the Navy, the real credit for this movie's realism goes to Robert Montgomery. He brought his actual experience as a PT Boat skipper to the role - despite his movie demotion from being the actual rank of Commander in the USNR back to a Lieutenant for this role. And you can tell by his performance that he must have been a hell of a skipper.

This is a fine film that shows a part of the Navy that perhaps was not as glamorous as that of Aircraft Carriers & Battleships or as clandestine as Submarines and Frogman (precursor to Seals), but was a critical part of our war effort in WW 2.

Is this Wall-E turns into Parasite?
5 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Great to see the team back together but what a silly storyline. I appreciate the environmental/climate change angle but sending a Kryptonian Wall-E who turns into a garbage Parasite was a wee bit silly.

Where was the racism?
14 April 2021
I have to agree that this episode was not one of the best and perhaps deserves many of the negative critiques it received. What I don't understand is the various trivia notes discussing disappointment about the blatant racism in the episode.

Though the episode does involve African Americans representing an alien culture with primitive undertones. But what specifically was racist in this episode?
