The Newsroom (2012)
The show is cute but dumb
The show is just dumb. It wears the outfit of an intelligent show but doesn't have the content. It is a quick bundle of mediocre drama that doesn't deliver on character or substance.
Too many of the characters are consistently incompenent to drive drama to the point you don't believe anyone could have their position.
The dialogue is incredibly quipy to the point of being very bothersome, you can almost time your watch by it, the smug goop overloads it. There are too many monologues pretending to be conversations
The music drives every scene loudly and bluntly just so you know how to feel every second because the director doesn't have any confidence in the audience to understand what is happening.
You will be annoyed by this series before it is done.
Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019)
Everything you expect it is
This film is a quick goofy ride with enough fun action to carry it through. It is dumb as can be and incredibly predictable, but what else do you expect? Smirked my way through the entire ~90 minute runtime.
Surprisingly violent and dark at times for the turtles but that is a positive for me. There are some bloody scenes that might be a bit much for kids.
You will get every scene you wanted in the order you would expect. Like really every one of them, which is ridiculous, but this is great fan service.
If you like either franchise this is an easy recommend.
If you expect it to be a great movie with drama, mystery, and emotions you've opened the wrong door.
When Jews Were Funny (2013)
Lacks direction
The film is a series of interviews with old stand-up routines and jokes mixed in. There is a general lack of forward momentum or guidance. We hit our note ten minutes in and sit there for an hour and change more.
You don't inherently need a narrative to drive the documentary but you need highs and lows, to atleast build to something. There isn't even a conversation on display, just a series of single points of views. Repeatedly there is humour from struggling and things have changed but still funny. There is some amusing philosophies but it just doesn't go anywhere and there are no real conflicts out of a few sputters of annoyance.
Also the pacing is always the same and all the shots are still single cameras, nothing is done to raise the interviews.
Professor T (2021)
Just rather boring
Feels very paint by numbers murder mystery. The lead is kind of odd but in an unchallenging way. The assistants are mediocre with little drama and romance mixed in to distract from the mundane. The mysteries are always solved by the 20 minute mark and then the show just keeps going. The episodes feel very interchangeable.
You don't really get anything out of watching beyond some middling mellow drama. The acting is fine. The shots okay. The production has sone funding but nothing exaggerated.
Feels like something you'd fall asleep to, because you don't need to see the ending to any episode and can follow along even when distracted on your phone.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Clearly historical inaccurate melodrama
As you watch it there are clear scenes in which characters do things that are unbelievable setups for melodrama that take you out of the film. There are numerous scenes where I thought 'well that never happened, that was just added in make the film more poetic' and I was sadly right every time. The actual story is interesting, but this film goes out of the way to make accusations if not outright character assassination of multiple real people. Almost insulting to watch if you do any research into the real story.
Performances are okay but almost entirely what you'd expect, often incredibly inaccurate to the real people.
Production is fine.
Direction mediocre.
Really just wasted a good story.
My Son Hunter (2022)
Really harkens back to the old lovable bad movies
This film has everything. It was clearly written by someone who doesn't really know much about film, didn't have nearly enough of a budget for the job, starred actors who have divebombed their careers, and seems like it had a legal team struggling to avoid getting sued.
You will watch and think, "that line almost sounded like a sentence a human would say, good work", "that sentence wasn't just exposition, high-fives all around", "that camera angle showed the things happening in the scene, superb", "this scene wasn't clearly written by a person who has never seen a drug outside of TV", "so this is what your career came too? You used to have a TV show", "that was an honest try at humor", and many more encouraging phrases.
Also they included an ad for the producers website in the middle of the movie, (a character turns to the camera and says to use the website) you gotta respect the hustle.
Per un pugno di dollari (1964)
Just a great western
You get everything you could want out of a western (well except for romance from the lead). Great action, villains, heroics, schemes, very intense when it needs to be, legitimately scary, and the music carries you everywhere. Just enjoyable from start to finish.
Alex's War (2022)
It is just a puff piece
I don't know too much about Jones so I decided to watch this film since he is in the news. You don't really get a lot out of this movie. I think it is meant to be a greatest hits kind of story but it doesn't work for me. We just jump from semi-connected event to semi-connected event.
Also I don't get a sense of the world of Jones, like does he have any friends or fellow conspiracy people? The film seems to be him, a cameraman, and his sidekick owen. I feel like there should be more people in this movie.
Also the music is way over the top and too on the nose for basically every scene.
It feels like the filmmaker didn't feel like doing too much legwork and just went with the easy blocks from Jones' Wikipedia page.
I skimmed the Wikipedia page for the man for about five minutes after the film and feel like I got more out of it than I did from this film.
Boogie, el aceitoso (2009)
very clunky English translation
The film is fine for what it is but I saw the English dub of the film which is not well made and feels like it used something like google translate from the time. The strange grammar weird word choices are constant and distracting. The film is otherwise interesting but not especially entertaining.
2000 Mules (2022)
Very strange documentary
Largely b-roll of people going about their days durring the 2020 election and talking head sections. Not especially well made (low production values and editing issues are obvious, please review your edit before exporting) or convincing. They just show a person drop off their ballots and then say it might be a criminal conspiracy. There is also a lot of stuff about phone data but it just kind of shows people walking/driving around a city.
I really expect more effort from conspiracy videos, I feel the creator phoned this in.
Detroit: Become Human (2018)
A mixed jumble of metaphors that don't work
The entire society this show exists in is nonsense at best. The morals are strange. The overarching plots are completely illogical and rely heavily on lying to the player or just hoping that you ignore major problems (Why do robots want to go to Canada if they need supplies to survive and Canada banned such supplies?). The social commentary is both incredibly basic and just not well thought out. The gameplay is typical for this studio.
Absolutely baffling that people love this game.
Bâsudê wandârando (2019)
rather uninteresting fantasy adventure
Doesn't do anything especially interesting in plot or visuals. Enjoyable enough as it goes a long but leaves you with nothing in the end. The story stops and the lesson was told in the first five minutes. Likely good enough for small children but rather boring and unexceptional for an older audience.
Generally fine but nothing to sink your teeth into. Lacking in its own identity when so many better films exist.
Run Hide Fight (2020)
Seems like old schlock but is new
Really feels like a a cheap vhs production you'd order by mail in the 1980s but in hd. Nothing special or interesting about it really, just a Frankenstein's monster of tropes from better films. I assume it was made by one of those studios that makes like 50 flims a year in the hopes one takes off.
Okay if you like that kind of thing bit lacks any real charm.
Mrs. Worthington's Party (2007)
Okay beginning but falls into mellow drama halfway through
Just boring and depressing at a certain point. Nothing particularly interesting after the amusing opening section.
Watch of you want to feel down, not a great Christmas film in my opinion.
Ma vie de Courgette (2016)
Very too the point and enjoyable
'I feel yah' is what I repeatedly say when watching this film. It is simple but emotional. Very easy to understand and relate to. Easy to recommend to pretty much any age group.
La casa lobo (2018)
Incredible and almost unwatchable for the faint of heart
Constant impressive visuals that will strick with you that are tied into an, at times, disturbing story. You kay want to look away but it is very gripping.
Tucker Carlson Originals: Patriot Purge: Part 1 (2021)
Just constantly gets basic facts wrong
Features interviews with a series of criminals and con artists all of whom are selling their own versions of events to the point the show contradiction itself consistently. The event was peaceful, also all the violence was done by instigators. The media is making things up but also they retract and apologize for making mistakes. All the permits were proper but also no permits were needed. The patriot act was bad but also several sources are pro-patriot act. The Knowledge on display is limited at best. It seriously is in a Fight with itself.
Romantic Comedy (2019)
This is an feminist academic work more than a film
People seem to be coming into this film expecting a send up to the greatest romcoms when it is really an analysis of the harmful aspects of many romantic comedies. It has a feminist perspective and semi-academic tone. The film would work well as an extended youtube video or masters in film thesis. Ultimately surprisingly enjoyable but I wish it were more technical/professional/analytical.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
A fun show that get's better as it goes on
The characters really develop a lot for a comedy and it ends when it should. Good work all around. I won't be rewatching it any time soon but I do watch clips from time to time.
Easy to recommend.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
It is okay
Didn't see the original version, so can't compare.
I thought this was going to be impossibly boring because of the absurd run time but it managed to maintain my interest for the full film. Nothing really stands out, the imagery and action are fine but unimaginative
and overall there is nothing to be amazed by. Probably wouldn't make good background noise.
Very functional middle film but I haven't watched the prequel and the sequel isn't out so I can't say if it works for the whole series.
Batman vs. Two-Face (2017)
Fun throwback
Very 'for the fans' but enjoyable overall. Easy to watch but seems a bit choppy at times. Relatively low budget but no major issues.
Easy to recommend for casual viewing. Don't take it too seriously.
Army of the Dead (2021)
it just keeps going
It is a mediocre 90 minute film that goes for over 2 hours. So many scenes just run long and the dialogue is weak.
Nerdland (2016)
Really feels like it wasn't meant to be a film
Rather messy and not very funny. Feels like it should either be a series of 5 minute shorts or expanded to 12 episode series of 30 minute episodes. Rather juvenile humor. Looks okay but cheap at times, honestly thought it was made in the mid 2000s.
Clunky in general.
Joker (2019)
Okay remake
Not a great film, very Hollywood version of the original.
Yakusoku no Neverland (2019)
Shame about all that
9/10 season 1
4/10 season 2
Split the difference really.
Will be leaving you scratching your head and saying "really, we had all that build up, all those characters, all those plot points, and we just plumb forget about them for the ending" an ending that makes little in the way of sense as well. No real idea what went wrong but something certainly collapsed in production. Kind of feel bad for the people who worked on it as there is some very nice art but the story disappoints in the latter third.
