Doctor Strange (2016)
Stop with the non-stop jokes
Very good surprise after disappointing Marvel movies. Brilliant visuals. Interesting screenplay. Good dialogues. In my opinion, Doctor Strange as one of the best Marvel movies. But this is the beef I got with Marvel, the non-stop bloody jokes. Stop making jokes happen. Yes, I do understand it is a Disney film but really....Doctor Strange is supposed to be a drama story. Just think. The bloke has a broken body and spirit. The Ancient One choose the loneliness of eternal life to protect Earth. Let us talk about Earth. Could be wipe out at any moment. But why not joke at any moment possible? I understand the logic of having a joke after a dramatic scene, but please not every 5 minutes. You cannot take the movie or the characters seriously then.
Suicide Squad (2016)
"Oh, I'm not gonna kill you, I'm just gonna hurt you, really, really, bad!"
First off, I have seen a lot of bad reviews. They must stop comparing DC and Marvel. DC has always been dark. No stupid jokes as Marvel. I never listen to the critics. I like to have my own opinion about any film. You do not like the film? Well, that's just like your opinion, man. Alas, some of those "critics" are only saying what they hear without even see the actual film. These critics needs and enema! As a DC fan, this film was wicked. There is some imagery I thought we had never see on the big screen. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Just incredible. I have heard a lot of people barking mad about "Harley being too sexy" Why so salty? She is wearing hot pants because they are sparkly and fun. She does not do it because she wants blokes to look at her arse. Jared Leto as The Joker was good. That whole thug-life/Lil Wayne/Ellen Degeneres on a rough day Joker look I was not keen on, but thankfully he was not like that all the time. In general, everyone played an excellent part.
Only beef, Enchantress and Incubus. They are the worst comic book movie villains of all time. At least we know what the endlessly dull Malekith from Thor: The Dark World wants. At least Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze is a campy hoot to watch and quote. At least Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor was weird enough to create conversation and at least Doomsday felt like a world-threatening force of nature (even thought he looked like Chet from Weird Science). These two want to destroy humanity just because. Alas, Cara Delevingne, she was not right for this part in my opinion. Whatever the whole "waving your arms around in slow motion" thing just looked silly. She was pretty bloody horrible. She cannot act.
Good movie, just let down by weird editing and direction choices.
Deadpool (2016)
Chimichanga time!
Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the eighth installment in the X-Men film series. It follows Wade Wilson who, after being subjected to an experiment that leaves him with new abilities, hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
From the studio that inexplicably sewed his *beep* mouth shut the first time, comes... Deadpool. It may not have been the superhero that Hollywood wanted, but he's certainly the one they deserve. After years of speculation as to whether or not everyones favourite anti-superhero would actually get made into a standalone picture, Tim Miller's Deadpool has arrived. Do not let the February release date fool you, this is very much the film that both fans of the character and Ryan Reynolds have been waiting for. Full of comedic snark and constant fourth wall breaks (and Inception style fourth wall breaks within those), it delivers every bit upon its promise, a truly entertaining ride from start to finish. Minutes into opening credits, you are gracefully dropped into the self-aware world of the film, with notable credits such as "directed by an overpaid tool," and "produced by *beep*hats." If that does not sell you on what kind of comedy Deadpool brings to the table, then you can always catch a screening of Zoolander 2 next door. When it comes down to it, Deadpool is one part vendetta film, one part romantic tale a la "Beauty and the Beast" style. This is the role that Ryan Reynolds were born to play. It's been a passion project for the actor for many years, and it shows. He is to the Deadpool franchise (the sequel were already planned ahead of its release) what Robert Downey Jr. is to Iron Man. You cannot imagine anyone else possibly playing the role. Erased from memory is the X-Men Origins: Wolverine version that Reynolds played in 2009. What a relief. The tie-in to the world of X-Men is somewhat limited aside from the inclusion of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. I will not saying more. At the end of the day, Deadpool's re-watch factor is sky high, possibly the most important success of them all. I'm touching myself tonight.
Mr. Holmes (2015)
Ageing Holmes saga is sadly clueless
SIR IAN MCKELLEN is Sherlock Holmes! It should be a crowning role in the great theatrical knight's career: awards and honours ahoy. Alas, it has not quite worked out like that.
Mr Holmes is a surprisingly dreary and unexciting portrait of the legendary detective in his twilight years as he struggles to reconcile himself to his fading powers and a half-remembered final case which prompted his early retirement.
Based on the novel A Slight Trick of The Mind by Mitch Collins, there is nothing wrong with the central premise. How would Sherlock Holmes spend his retirement? It's an intriguing question. One assumes bowling and bingo would be out. So too solving the mystery of the neighbours missing cat.
As it turns out the last mystery Holmes has to unlock concerns the human heart. As he confronts his own mortality the great rational mind must face up to the complex swirl of human emotions: love, loneliness, fear.
Alas, these valid themes fail to be animated with any zip, panache or, ironically, emotion due to a dry, slow-moving story and a portrait of Holmes that robs the great man of his allure and mystique.
This is not McKellen's fault: playing Holmes as a 93-year-old and, in flashbacks, a man 30 years younger he is commanding and regal with a sly wit. The problem is a dull screenplay that fails to make a virtue of cutting Holmes down to size.
Directed by Bill Condon, who collaborated more successfully with McKellen in the Oscar nominated Gods and Monsters, the picture looks fine with some lovely Sussex landscapes and it's always a pleasure to watch McKellen. The problem is the story. Elementary, really.
Jurassic World (2015)
As bad as one of those Dinocroc vs. Supergator type movies
I see a lot of people (rightly so) asking about the two unmentioned movies in the franchise in this sequel for anyone that wants clarification heres my gist of it. Jurassic Park happens The Lost World happens Jurassic Park 3 happens Jurassic World happens Jurassic World is "the sequel" to Jurassic Park. But, it is not ignoring The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III. While neither sequel is referenced in the film, their events have been referenced in the film's promotional materials and viral marketing. For example, the San Diego incident is mentioned, John Hammond died shortly after the events of The Lost World: Jurassic Park. In real life, Richard Attenborough died of natural causes on 24 August 2014, aged 90. There is a Hammond's memorial statue in the Innovation Center in this film, in a feature introducing the character Vic Hoskins, it's revealed his team did work involving flying dinosaurs, referring the Pteranadons that escaped at the end of Jurassic Park III. The bones of a Spinosaurus can be seen in the main plaza of the park. T-Rex is even shown to smash through them during the final fight. As a way to show that the T-Rex is still the king of the dinosaurs. In a likely reference to the fan complaints that the T-Rex was killed by the Spinosaurus in Jurassic Park III. Read and digest that how ever you like, all it was and is, is an article that came out saying that the director said it is the sequel to Jurassic Park.. you don't say. It feels and resembles lots to do with Jurassic Park... wow really? D'oh. The island in which the events of Jurassic Park happened, happened on Island Nublar in which Jurassic World happens. This means you do not need anything to do with The Lost World: Jurassic Park or Jurassic Park III because they happened on Isla Sorna/Site B. The sequel to Jurassic World will most likely revisit this island, as well as mention, what probably is happening on the island in Jurassic World.. its not that hard to just suspend your disbelief for a bit until you get your answers. Oh and the books are different to the movies. Savvy? Groovy. Glad I could help. Thank you for your cooperation. Jurassic World were like a SyFy film. We have dinosaurs used for war. Really? I were expecting the rap tors to say "Alan" at one point or riding a bike. Literally as bad as one of those Dinocroc vs. Supergator type movies. Bad CGI. Bad acting. A complete embarrassment to all involved. It's only saving grace is that it's occasionally so bad that it's kind of funny. And the Jurassic Park theme. The music still moves me to this day. They should not use it for nostalgia. John Williams has not written a hummable tune since Jurassic Park! I want to hear a new Jurassic Park theme! They are just trying to make the stuff that is already been done, to be groovy.
Terminator Genisys (2015)
Terminator Genisys is yet another sequel that fails to live up to the first two movies
The central thrust of the scattered, clanging and unwieldy "Terminator Genisys" is that the Cloud will destroy us all.
Now, they do not exactly call it the Cloud, as they do in last year's "Sex Tape." But maybe that straining Cameron Diaz-Jason Segel comedy was onto something when it warned us that uploading information and then sync hing all our electronic devices to each other might be a dangerous thing after all.
But for better and for worse, this is Schwarzenegger's show. His performance, and his character's evolution, are the reasons "Terminator Genisys" turns unfortunately jokey and self-referential, to the point that it borders on parody. Schwarzenegger's one-liners helped define the franchise in its early years. They were a reflection of this flesh-covered machine's awkward, heavily accented attempts at assimilating with humans, and they provided much-needed comic relief. Here, when he says "I'll be back," it's more likely to produce groans than grins. Schwarzenegger has turned into your elderly uncle, dancing like a goof ball at your wedding after a couple glasses of champagne. He knows he's being silly, and he knows that you know, and that alone is supposed to be good for a laugh. But it's not. It's just sad. He has essentially become McBain.
Clearly, it's time to say "Hasta la vista, baby," once and for all.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Fury Road is an extravaganza non-stop action fuel injection.
Oh what a day! What a lovely day! I am a Mad Max fan, having seen the three mad Max films at age of eleven. I adored the films in all their weird and action-packed glory and they have only gotten better with age. George Miller was very clever in not doing the "reboot" a remake of Mad Max, revealing how Max Rockantasky became The Road Warrior, George Miller decided that the reboot will take place in the post- apocalyptic Australia, years after the new Max lost his family, because he did not wish to do a remake or retell the story that had already been told and had wanted to update the universe and the wasteland and wanted new movie goers to remember Max as a man with nothing to lose after losing his family. I see Fury Road as a pseudo sequel to Road Warrior and it has the quality of such. Over 80% of the effects seen in the film are real practical effects, stunts, make-up and sets, the action and production design is easily among the top. Using that visual frame of reference, Miller is able to use the action, not just to have cool moments and move the story forward, but also add to the great character work done within the action scenes. The characters are defined, informed and developed by the actions that they take without having the need to announce what they learn or spell out how they feel to the audience. It's all in what Miller is able to capture on camera with the help of cinematographer, John Seale, delivering Oscar-calibre work. People is calling the film "Mad Maxine: Femmy Road" (aka feminist utterly trash) That is a load of rubbish. Charlize Theron is perfect as Furiosa. Mad Max always had powerful females: In Mad Max we have an old women holds up an entire gang with a shotgun, in Road Warrior the warrior woman stabbing blocks and killing them all day long and in Beyond Thunderdome Tina Turner took control of an entire town and created the thunder dome. Get familiar with the old movies before freaking out about the new one. I dislike Tom Hardy but his excellent as Max. Hugh Keays-Byrne (Toecutter in Mad Max) as Immortan Joe is perfect. He was brilliant. His voice was extremely menacing, and was portrayed as godlike. What I mean by that is he is worshipped by all as a God. What made him even more menacing is that if he caught up to Max only your imagination could describe what he would of done.
