The show is fun to watch but the only thing bigger than the plot holes is Walter O-Brien's ego.
I think that if the show had not been marketed as "based on real events" it would have been easier to watch. That said, it does proclaim to be "real" and, therein, lies the problem.
So, watch the show with the understanding that it is 100% pure fiction (unrealistic fiction, I might add.) Please, do not take it seriously or you will hate this show.
