WandaVision (2021)
A good idea, excellently executed.
I'm definitely not the biggest of Marvel, but WandaVision is a delight. Excellent work, especially since Lizzie and Paul are two of the best actors in the franchise, in my opinion.
I love that the series starts without any explanation whatsoever, with a very lighthearted format and beautiful dialogues. If the whole series were like that, it would be enough for me (undoubtedly artistic, and a love letter to sitcoms).
In contrast, they throw in a couple of creepy moments that make you wonder if there's something wrong: weird instants that cut the pace like a knife, mixing all that pleasure of watching innocent acting with a subtle darkness, only to introduce you to an excellent justification of the story.
For me, one of the finest works done by Marvel, along with Loki and Into the Spider-verse.
Si shi qing chun (2018)
Lighthearted with a beautiful art.
No explosions or magic, also don't spect an intricate story or fantastic characters; quite the opposite - it's all about three slow, realistic stories that left me with a beautiful aftertaste of what means to be alive. The beauty is in the simplicity, the tranquility and the uneventfulness of a normal human life.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
A masterpiece in its own right.
First, I totally believe that some movies need to be seen more than once; it takes time to notice every plot detail, like PotC. Every time I see this one, I like it even more; I love how everyone has interests, fears, and obsessions; I love the folklore, the references from nautical myths; I love the characters, and I love the special and visual effects.
I'm not an academic, but the acting, seems to me, spot-on; even Orlando Bloom, which -it's true- acts like a robot, fits well in his character.
Mild spoiler ahead...
But, something has to be said: Davy Jones must be the best CGI character ever developed. For me, the movie is totally worth it just for watching the first scene where he asks: "...do you fear death?", just after blowing the flame for his pipe. Just for that, this movie deserved to win an Oscar, which it did.
Anyway, just watch and enjoy.
E.T.: A Holiday Reunion (2019)
Made me cry And feel like a kid.
A refreshing ad full of nostalgia, that captures the essence of the 80's film so well, that it managed to make me cry in a matter of seconds. I personally love ET, but I know that a sequel would be just silly, so the fact that these guys made one in 2 minutes, is just enough for me - I couldn't have asked for more. I gave it 10/10, not because it deserves an Oscar or anything, but as an ad, it is as good as it can get.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)
A revelation, that stimulates your imagination, an odyssey sure it is.
I know we all love Carl Sagan, and he's clearly Neil's (the host) inspiration in this series, but this is a whole new series, with new scientific facts, a very nice script and some awesome visual effects and animations, including a great host.
You may read some reviews attacking Neil: "Carl Sagan is much better". But this is not a competition, watch it as it is, a different person making a different series in a different time, "Carl Sagan"'s argument is not valid for me.
By watching Cosmos, I felt an enormous motivation that kept me going thought all the chapters. It's a remarkable piece, and even if you know everything, all the facts and theories that Cosmos has to offer, you will experience the miracle of meeting, and imagining all the universe that surrounds us, just brilliant. And maybe Cosmos has some facts and some mere speculations, but if you keep on going, you'll find out that Neil knows that, you wont be tricked.
You'll learn and imagine the lives of many scientific and philosophers that lived across the centuries, some remarkable icons of our history. Give you, your family and friends, an opportunity to learn and discuss about all the wonders of the universe. I'm sure that Carl Sagan would love this spacetime odyssey.
I don't find it offensive to any religion or ideology, meet the world you live in, and enjoy it. Make your own ideas, and don't be offended by other's.
