Cube: Ichido haittara, saigo (2021)
I didn't expect any remake could be THIS bad
Firstly like many other have written, I'm also a huge cube fan. I enjoyed all the movies to an extent and they always added a nice blend of mystery and horror. This movie unfortunately delivers nothing new, and somehow even in 2021 was still able to substantially exceed the worst of my fears for it, almost entirely copying the script of the first movie, having terrible acting, non existent special effects and a lack of any story.
The problem with copying the first movie is that original fans can predict every single thing that's going to happen. They still use the prime numbers and Cartesian coordinates, the rooms move around, the traps are similar, hell, they even copied the sound sensitive scene from the original. Remakes are supposed to add new elements, not copy almost everything and just expect to be good.
There are numerous other problems with the movie itself. I felt no empathy for any of the characters, they were bland and pointless and the wierd backstory they attempted to add was totally out of place. The set designs are also a disappointment, as they once again copied the vault door mechanisms of the cube, where there was a perfect opportunity to use more modernised methods to create a more unique cube. Even the start of the movie has a ridiculous moment, where a trap cleanly cuts through a man's body, but somehow the chunk of flesh is able to slide out of him with nobody pushing it afterwards. A delusional reviewer said this movie had 'more drama' but even a stone can see the characters shared almost no meaningful interactions and the acting was sub par.
This delusional reviewer, marcandre, goes on to give this a 10/10 and called it 'a must watch' to which I have to say, please share with me whatever you were smoking because it must be some incredible stuff to make a pile of trash turn into gold.
Pandorum (2009)
Really Good movie, worth the watch
I was not expecting much watching Pandorum, as many others probably weren't either. It seems like your typical B-grade movie that will have that cheap and cheesy feel to it. However, I was really pleasantly surprised at how good the movie was. It of course has its mistakes, I feel some of the actors went a little overboard, plot holes, the monsters seemed a little sub-par and there was little character development. What this movie really does well with however, are the set designs and mystery.
I noticed others are comparing this movie to The Descent and Alien, and I agree that this was kind of a hybrid. However, it's still not easy to pull off a movie with these concepts in mind, and this movie should be praised for the result it gives in its plot and direction.
Overall, this movie definitely deserves ratings higher than it has from critics. The plot kept me interested with its unpredictability and interesting screenplay. The rating should certainly be above a 7.
Rick and Morty: Childrick of Mort (2020)
Feels like it could have been from the first few seasons!
I am so glad that the abomination of Season 4 Episode 6 seems to be a one off. Episode 7,8 and now 9 turned out to be really great episodes, full of funny and original moments. I think 9 personally was one of the best in the season, it had that classic Rick and Morty feel where Rick unleashes his mega-genius and does something pointless but entertaining. I know it seems like "Oh they aren't sticking to the story now" but I think this type of Rick and Morty is satisfying for the majority of viewers, at least for the time being. I think (and hope) they will return to a more directional story next season, but let's be happy with what we have now because it really was nothing to complain about (apart from episode 6).
Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
Do NOT watch this if you want to keep your good memories from the first 2 movies.
Everything about this movie felt off from the first 2, which I enjoyed so much more. The music and vocals were great, but didn't experiment anything new and they chose the safe option of just reading through popular pop lyrics. I feel like it would probably be easier if I just list all the issues I had with this movie:
Strange/non-existent plot which had utterly pointless development. We feel little to no motivation to root for the Bellas in this new boring competition. We go from The Bellas reuniting, to another "competition", to somehow Fat Amy's Druglord father showing up out of nowhere. It wasn't so much the random story that got me, it was how off this movie felt to the first two. I mean I'm pretty sure the cook dies on the yacht in this movie, Fat Amy is just some professional assassin who can take out multiple muscular men and heartlessly explodes the boat, probably killing a few people. I mean, when did murder and kidnapping become part of Pitch Perfect?
Secondly, WHY DJ Khaled?? I could think of a million other artists (if you can even class a guy who just yells his name in every song an artist), who would have absolutely demolished his performance and make the movie more convincing. I really felt like Khaled must have been the one who payed the producers to get this role, because he was just treated like a god in the story, like he was royalty who doesn't care about the lower singers and he plays some piano as if his skills and privileges are unmatched. DJ Khaled is like James Corden, he's in a few odd movies, his presence doesn't really fit the context, and every time we see him the movie automatically feels terrible. Imagine someone like Adam Levine in Khaled's role!
The movie had almost no development. In the first 2 movies, part of their success was through the process of 'rising up' and 'finding yourselves', which the Bellas had to overcome together. In this movie, they sing, they sing again, and again; there's no practicing we see, they just know a bunch of songs and seemingly sing on the spot when the time comes. On top of this, it turns out that The All-Powerful and Knowing DJ Khaled never cared about that stuff anyway, because he can just "feel" Becca's unlimited potential by listening to a few recordings and mashups she makes while in his hotel room. Who cares about all the other talented bands there right?
The Songs were a little boring to me. The vocals, don't get me wrong, were 10/10, but I didn't feel the same improvisational lyrics the other 2 movies conveyed so well. It was super generic, they didn't try anything new the last movies did, they basically just sang popular pop songs together. They even sung the Exact same song 'Toxic' twice which I really don't understand the point of.
I could really go on but I feel those were my main issues. All in all, it could have been worse, but I really wouldn't watch this movie if you enjoyed the first 2, because it will ruin your good perception of the characters and storyline. This movie was unnecessary, had little development and almost no plot. It felt cheap, didn't have many funny jokes, and was a really poor and disappointing end to the Pitch Perfect movies.
Porno (2019)
Biased positive reviews on this, it should be a 0
Another poor terrible movie with 0 production value. Also worth noting before you say "oh but that guy kannibalcorpsegrinder rated it a 10 it must be decent", this same guy rates the movie "Us" a 9/10, a movie unanimously hated for its utterly terrible direction and he rates it a 9.... not to mention the other hundreds of low rating titles he has overrated. Plain and simple, this movie is trash don't bother.
Onward (2020)
Ignore the bad reviews, this movie is still great, just not Pixar-great
This movie isn't really like a typical Pixar film. The story was excellent but i can see what some people are talking about when they say it seems 'rushed'. I didn't get that full satisfaction that I normally do when watching a movie like Ratatouille or Wall-e, something in it just seemed a little unfinished. The characters were quite convincing but again I would say a little forgettable and don't have that perfectly crafted Pixar-feel to them.
The animation was amazing, the same with the scenery and the idea of a Dark ages with a modernized city, seemed to work pretty well for me, but, many movies with this theme already exist, like Bright for example, so it's nothing groundbreaking. The magic itself was also a little generic. Some of the plot was pretty weak at times leaving a lot of piling questions, which is never good. How was the father was just somehow able to obtain an immensely rare phoenix crystal in the first place, or why he was a wizard and nobody knew about it. Why did the fairies and others suddenly learn how to fly with magic after simply crashing a bike, surely other incidents have happened since this storyline that would make them discover their abilities. How did Ian's magic suddenly improve so greatly to the point where he becomes a professional wizard within a day. It was also a little strange to me why the brothers seemed to miss their father to such a massive degree after so many years. I mean it's very normal to always have sadness, but the level of crushing depression that Ian had seemed strange, that he must have been this sad for over a decade without getting over it, even after he barely met his father when he was very young.
Overall, it's still a great movie, and I enjoyed the majority of it. As an animation, this movie succeeds in every way, as a pixar movie I don't think it matches the story quality Pixar is known for. Who knows, maybe we were spoilt in Pixar's early pictures, but movies like Toy Story 4 and Onward make me think we may never get another classic again.
Rick and Morty: Never Ricking Morty (2020)
The worst episode to date by a mile
What were they thinking? I'm at a complete loss for this episode. Not only did I not understand most of what was going on (no I do not have Rick-level intelligence sorry), but it just felt like the writer had a huge block halfway through the season. I really wasn't so impressed with the first part of season 4, but it was still watchable, there were still many parts I enjoyed and laughed at, and although the episodes aren't connected with each other, at least they followed a basic storyline in each one. Season 4 has definitely shown how cynical the writers can be, and it just feels so randomised to previous seasons. This episode was definitely different though, I just sat through and didn't laugh once, I didn't know what was going on, it was just a culmination of everything that has been building up that is wrong with the show at it's peak; a hot mess. I really don't understand where all these 10/10 reviews are coming from, you guys just think you are the Rick's who understand the "Deeper meaning" of Meta in this episode, you think it's some "Masterpiece of an episode that was cleverer than it seems", when really, they just rolled a dice with random ideas and jumbled them all together into a blended tragic, unbearable episode we all waited months to watch.
NB: Even if this "contained spoilers", there would be nothing to spoil anyway...
Escape Plan 2: Hades (2018)
This movie is so bad that we should be naming and shaming the individuals responsible
Honesty I am shocked above all. The first escape plan was such a good movie. Everything about it was interesting, new and unique and enjoyable to watch with a great cast! There is nothing to suggest that a sequel could have done this badly.
I don't think it is merely a coincidence that this movie did as badly as it did. There were some very, VERY poor decisions made throughout the movie which resulted in this complete and utter train wreck and embarrassment of a sequel to be produced. I honestly think movies that do this badly are on another level of bad, and the people responsible should be named and shamed and sacked immediately as they are clearly not suited to the movie industry. Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but such an accumulation and frequency of them in such a high magnitude points to a very unsuitable individual in the movie industry. So I had another look into the details to help me understand how this all could have gone wrong.
First, let's look at the cast. Yes, some of the acting was dry and bad, but there were 3 amazing actors part of the cast which should have boosted the appeal by a great deal. So why didn't it? Well, it could be because the main and loved actors were barely featured in the movie. Now this could be down to poor writing of the movie but when we look at Miles Chapman's previous works including escape plan 1, they were largely great hits and there were few major problems in his writing that could lead to this being produced. Even with gaps in the movie plots and a poorly thought out scene can easily be amended if the director and other writers have any half of a brain to do so to still transform the movie into something great. We see this all the time and movies are never the same as books, but rather key scenes put together to tell us roughly the same story in a logical and well thought out way.
I began focusing my attention on the director of this movie. Some unknown guy called Steven C. Miller. Have you ever heard of him? Nope, neither have I. At first glance, this guy is a 5 foot 5, beerbellied, overtattood man with a terrible track record in the past. After observing his previous works, just one of his movies has scored over a rating of 5/10, and even that was a close call as well. So what were people expecting hiring this man? That suddenly he would produce a masterpiece as good as the first movie when he barely has produced a watchable movie in the past on not even half the budget this movie had? I honestly think this is where the movie goes wrong. Whoever was responsible for hiring this complete clown essentially ruined the franchise from day 1, and seeing the result, I can't be surprised that Steven C Miller cannot cope with such a big movie as this, considering his past works are a complete joke and taunt to good movie directors. The poor efforts and abilities of this man have resulted in a terrible unwatchable tragedy of a movie, and this man should never be allowed to work on a film again as he has proven time and time again of how incapable and how unsuitable he is for directing.
In conclusion, I think this movie failed for a large number of factors, but the largest of all, the one which put this movie in the top 100 worst ever movies of all time, was the incapable and unintelligent director (should not even have the privilege of being called one), Steven C Miller, who's terrible sense of directing and track record resulted in one of the most catastrophic failures from a good franchise I have ever witnessed in my life. This man should be sacked and fined for his terrible work, and I think this movie should be remade with the same director from the first movie before you guys go ahead and make the third because this is unacceptable garbage that fans cannot possible ever want, no matter how hard they try to bare it.
Minions (2015)
Very disappointing considering all the merchandise made and expectations we had for this movie..
I honestly don't write reviews very much but I felt like I had to for this one. Long story short, Illumination Studios MESSED UP real bad with this movie. We were all expecting some amazingly funny movie from the previous movies (despicable me 1 and 2), but maybe we were spoilt with the humor and quality so much that we were all just expecting too much for this movie. I mean it wasn't a train wreck, but the movie felt very forced and it just didn't have that magic to it that so many animations have these days. All of the jokes were pretty much shown in the trailer for this movie, and I don't really think the movie should have gone the way it had, it was Way too focused in London for some reason. This movie is completely different to despicable me despite still having the minions in it and I think this movie was only meant for kids this time despite previous movies still being entertaining for adults and teenagers. My advice is to not watch this unless you really can't find anything else to watch, most of the laughter is summed up in the trailer anyway I guess everyone makes mistakes lets all just hope despicable me 3 is good (if it ever gets produced after a failure like this that is....)
