Embarrassing
30 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't watch the whole thing. These two actors have done some wonderful work but this thing I just do not understand. Maybe it is a veiled metaphor for marriage, which could be funny for a lot of people. But I stopped watching it shortly after they started to try to kill each other. Blah. They are so much better than what this dog required of them. I think it does well because everyone knows this is where they started their offscreen marriage.

Wuthering Heights (1998 TV Movie)

Gritty and Uncomfortable
2 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the best film adaptation of Wuthering Heights to date (22 years later). Great photography, not too many words, and tons of emotion. Reviewing a subsequent production, Roger Ebert said something like "Wuthering Heights is every woman's favorite." In this version you don't necessarily see Catherie and Heathcliffe's relationship as a healthy one - at least I didn't. I didn't yearn to see them together. Maybe that's a failure on the part of casting, but although the acting was fine, I did not find their chemistry to be romantic. In this version, the sad failing of each character is at the fore and Heathcliffe's revenge feels eternal. Sure he was abused, but he has not turned out to be a good guy, to the point where someone should make a film describing how Heathcliffe came into his fortune while offscreen.

So why is this the best version? It has the right balance of grit, weather, nature, passion, and human pain. The photography is great and the production values make it on a level with the best current Masterpiece Theatre stuff, even 20 years later. Granted it's painful to watch, and I can't call it completely entertaining. The nurse, Nelly, becomes a kind of touchstone character - the only one anybody is ever glad to see for most of the film, including Heathcliffe. They had to keep him offscreen and just show her face when he approaches her after returning to visit Thrushcross Grange a rich man. You only hear his voice which harbors a touch of delighted love say, "Nelly!" as her face changes from recognition to a kind of dismay.

probably won't watch all of it
18 March 2019
Even as a young man he's very erudite and decisive, which makes this fun to watch. And lIstening to him speak about his art and perspective as a much older man makes this worth sitting through. Otherwise, nobody in the documentary who is interviewed (at least, in the first 40 minutes) really seems to know him well. That should make it more interesting or revelatory but it doesn't, really.

High Camp Amid the Troubles
28 December 2018
This perky show has a very interesting setting. It can be irreverently funny. As an American I never really considered "the troubles" could serve as the backdrop in a comedy show. The teenage girls seem properly neurotic or intensely hormonal which can be funny for a while but I'm sad to day I probably won't watch much more than the first couple episodes due to their overplayed angst. I do hope it does well.

Beautiful Words
6 November 2016
This film has beautiful performances and words - it's the moments that end up holding the most merit. Otherwise, a lot of it is lost on a practical level. For example, I didn't understand most of the characters' relationships on a completely literal level. How were Mary and her mother related to Cheyenne? What did Mary say in the first scene at the mall coffee shop? Between the unintelligible way they spoke and the (refreshing) non-expositional quality of the movie, you just have to take it as it comes. Much of the dialogue is poetic and nuanced, the performances from each actor are strong, and the photography is fun. I found it to be poetic and wonderful despite its befuddling aspects.

A Love Story
21 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Before seeing this I heard several descriptions of it, to the effect that it's a movie about a hotel where single people go and if they don't hook up they are turned into animals.

That's the first 40 minutes, but it's not what the movie is "about," It's a love story. And it's full of strange allegories about relationships that - to me - are really little and larger vignettes about relationship status' and existential angst, and a sort of cynical social commentary about anthropology and societal judgement. In some ways you can enter this movie as though you're about to watch a series of skits about "coupling" and it will work pretty fine.

I thought the ending made a lot of sense along the above lines. What connects two people really isn't the point. The point is that they are - and remain - connected.

Crappy trailer
5 March 2011
I really liked this movie, but I can't believe how disparate the tone of the trailer is vs the tone of this movie. The people who approved the trailer should be canned, because in my opinion the trailer will lose audiences who might normally like this film. The trailer makes it seem like this is a hyper suspenseful and violent action thriller, which couldn't be further from what it is - an entertaining puzzler. I wouldn't give it a 10, but it was genuinely entertaining with some fresh and interesting faces. Why everything seems to need to be sold like and action thriller these days is confusing to me. I'm sure they test market a lot of these things, but the trailer totally missed the point and I wouldn't have gone to see it had my friend really wanted to go and had I just noticed a decent review.

He's a Cop
3 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed watching Daniel Craig as James Bond. He has a simian quality the others haven't, except perhaps Connery a bit. When he sat down at the poker table with the other international high-rollers, in comparison to them he just screamed "cop." The short hair, the buff almost military appearance, ape like bearing. This Bond has some privilege but he doesn't have to cover up with the airs of a gentleman. His manners are dictated by common sense more than breeding or a concern for appearances. I also like his almost robotic nature when he's behind the scenes doing his job, crashing the cars, sneaking into the hotel's security office, always 5 steps ahead of us. Sometimes Craig seems a little over-botoxed with the lack of facial expressions, but his fanny did look really cute in those blue linen pants.

Slick but Boring
25 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's hard to say why this movie was such a thud compared to the first one. There were some scenes which were improvements on the original, but the original was just a hands-down classic, from Pamela Sue Martin's long skirt converting into a jumpsuit to Ernest Borgnine and Stella Stevens' painful and tumultuous love scenes to Gene Hackman's classic camp monologue as he hangs from the main hatch over the pit of fire. And the list goes on...

This movie sustains none of the character development like the first one did. The chemistry between characters is totally lacking, and the dialog is uncompelling. The direction and dialog in the first movie were pretty bad, but there was still a depth to the characters' stories.

Where the second movie prevails is in its production values and special effects. The gory deaths are impressive and the ship is more of an inferno than a watery grave. Extending the scene in the ballroom was a good idea - the ocean felt bigger and the hopelessness of the situation and gruesomeness of those character's deaths in the heart of the ship was even sadder. Again though, there's just no substitute for Carol Linley (Nonnie Parry) singing "Morning After." They really should have done a cool reprisal of that song in this movie - more homages to the previous film probably would have garnered a larger audience.

I saw it - I might have liked it if I hadn't seen the original when I was 10. The original had the trappings of a classic, whereas this one will soon be forgotten.

A Very American Movie
28 October 2006
Good soundtrack, good eye candy.

This film would have benefited - greatly - from scripted dialog and more editing. It was obvious the director was driving at creating an atmosphere of a naive teenaged European monarchy and its trappings. But it was heavy handed to the point of ponderous in that regard. The casual language and rocky improvisation by the main characters came off more sloppy or "in your face cool" than anything, in my opinion. I am not surprised it was booed in Cannes, since it's patently American.

That said, it was generally fun to watch and marie antoinette's story was credible.

plenty of eye candy in this one!
8 May 2006
I liked it. I didn't think it was trying to be overly cool, and the dialog was amusing. I mean, I go to movies just to be entertained so it worked for me.

The best part of this film was the characters. I forgot Ben Kingsley was Ben Kingsley, and even Morgan Freeman, who is such an engaging person in himself always exuding integrity, goes beyond that and conveys a kind of weakness or hypocrisy which really made it feel like a different character for him. Bruce Willis was phenomenally elegant, and Josh Harnett - well, he doesn't really need to do much to be very amusing but I liked his delivery even though some called it smug.

People are ripping this movie a new one because it emulates other films, but the thing that carried it for me was the acting and the characterizations. I agree with another poster who said the first 20 minutes are amazing. Definitely a very strong rental with fun twists. Very violent though.

Survival of the Fittest
29 November 2005
I agree with the other reviewer - she would have made a great Bond girl... but ONLY if she killed James Bond.

I remember sitting slackjawed at this movie. It was alternately inconceivable someone could do that kind of thing to people, and hysterical (because it was a movie).

The story, script, and editing are really excellent and the soundtrack gives this film a totally unique feeling. The theme song is a kind of catchy, whimsical jazz which carries the "heroine's" sense of being able to do anything, but the irony is in the nature of the things she is doing.

It's one of the only movies I've seen where I so badly want to see the protagonist come to good riddance the whole time, yet when the film finally ends I don't want them out of my sight.

decent for made-for-TV
3 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This ***TV movie*** (hello? what are you expecting??) has a lot of good - and some bad - aspects. A hackneyed disaster film beginning leads to a fairly thought-provoking series of suspenseful plot turns, and the acting throughout is quite good. A few plot threads do just get dropped, like the determined naval commander ("This ship is STILL CONSIDERED DERELICT!"), the people locked in the conference room through the whole film, the Japanese guy locked in one of the bathrooms, etc. Charles Dutton and others milk it for what it's worth. Aidan Quinn is entertaining as the "weekend pilot" and the mix of characters and occasional potboiler dialog are good entertainment. This is a good casual watching movie. Good rental.
