Forgotten Hero (2017)
The Real Story of Navy Air Combat in Korea
On 18 November 1952, Then-Navy Lieutenant Royce Williams found himself alone in an aerial duel against SEVEN superior, aggressively flown Russian MiG jet aircraft.
I met him and listened to his story first hand. The movie was filmed aboard USS Midway and the film did an excellent job in telling his story.
Williams was forced to engage the MiGs as they swarmed him, and in the 38 minutes that followed, he bested at least four of those aircraft. The battle culminated with gut-wrenching air combat maneuvers to avoid being shot down while trying to take out the Russian pilots trying to kill him. He just-barely brought his wounded F9F Panther jet back and landed safely aboard the carrier Oriskany....where he was promptly told during the debriefing that what had just happened "didn't."
The Forgotten Hero of the Forgotten War. The House of Representative passed a defense authorization bill package in July 2022 to award his congressional medal of honor at the age of 97. This bill authorizes the President to award the Medal of Honor to Captain E. Royce Williams, US Navy Retired for his acts of valor as a Lieutenant in the Navy, on November 18, 1952.
Devotion (2022)
Action and Drama based on a True Story
I saw the movie at a pre-screening. A 1950s-era movie about naval aviation operations aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte (CV-32), commissioned in 1946. By 1950, among those squadrons based on Leyte were the VF-32 Swordsmen, flying the F4U Corsair. This squadron notably included the first African-American naval aviator, Ensign Jesse L. Brown and conducted flight operations in the Mediterranean that included a demonstration of airpower over Beirut, Lebanon to support the Middle East against Communist pressure. The ship and airwing departed on 6 September to join Task Force 77 to support United Nations Forces in the Far East in Korea where Ensign Jesse Brown, who was killed in action on 4 December 1950. These American Navy heroes are based on a true story that earned two naval aviators fame, one on a Medal of Honor and the other posthumously-awarded a Navy-Cross, while both were providing combat air support at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in December of 1950.
