Breaking Away (1979)
Man, what a good movie...!
One of those forgotten classics! Fairly well acted but it adds to the overall aura of the movie; not all polish and slick acting like I fear would be the case if made these days. The acting is just rough enough to be realistic within the context of the movie and there is some really genuine humor in here. As an aside, the book is almost verbatim with the movie; I don't know which came first, though. This movie made me run out and buy a Schwinn Le Tour (understanding that 'Le Tour' is french, not Italian...) and start riding all over Indiana(Fort Wayne, not Bloomington.) An A+ B movie that deserves a spot on the video shelf.
The Flim-Flam Man (1967)
If I was stranded on a desert island...
...I would want this movie. In my humble opinion this is one of the movie greats. I remember watching this as a 11-year old in 1979 on the Late Late Show and just marveling at it. The complex character of Mordecai Jones played by a brilliant George C Scott and the innocence of Curley (played by Michael Sarrazin) all set in the urgency of the 1950's South. I bought a used VHS copy on eBay and have just about worn it out in the 4 years I have had it and am waiting for it to come out on DVD. "Everybody has a little larceny in them..." is probably the best line in the movie and sets the pace for the rest of the movie, especially the run in with the cotton farmer played by Slim Pickens. It's in my Top 10.
Repo Man (1984)
Ummm, OK.
It is one of those oddly remembered movies... I remember going to see it at the World Theater on High St in Columbus, OH. 20 years later, however, I don't know what I ever saw in it. Bizareeness to the extreme. "A Repo Man is always intense" and the plate of shrimp is all I remember... although I lusted after the 66 Nova. Emelio Estevez is the quintessential smart mouth punk (leading up to the Breakfast Club...) and Harry Dean Stanton is, well, Harry Dean Stanton. One of those strangely compelling movies yet repulsive at the same time, kind of like Pulp Fiction. If you like weirdness this is the movie for you! xxxxxxxxxxx
