Double three act structure film
1 February 2020
It is really hard to make a double three act structure film work, and Trey Edward Shults does It. With a story this "big" and complex there was something needed to put everything together, and that's when the colour and aspect ratio come in. This two elements shape the whole movie with the help of music, directing and editing. I would like to underline how compact this movie feels, It seems like every little thing is going for a single collective goal.

The movie reminds me how universal and timeless can be everything that will happen to every single one of us, even If those actions won't change a thing for the rest.

Really worth checking It out, do not miss It, one of the best american indie films of the year.

Not as good as I would like It to be
1 February 2020
I really love Unamuno's work, and when I heard this movie was in production and that they would shot some scenes in my hometown, I said to myself "I have to watch this". It turns out not as good as I would like It to be, but still watchable. Amenábar bravely chooses a very controversial time period and historical figure. Some criticisim is related to the way he portrays the National side, but I think he deals with It skillfully. My biggest reproach would be, and this is very personal, that even If the movie captures his persona at times, fails at doing It throughout the rest of It. It might be because Miguel de Unamuno was too much of a human and too good at being.

Anyway, read his books, he was one of the greatests.

The editing, cinematography and camera work are godlike
1 February 2020
The editing, cinematography and camera work in this movie are godlike. A very interesting approach to the life of a female dancer that chooses a music style that is well known for defaming women but decides to go around that concept in order to reveal herself.

I highly recommend his previous films, Pablo Larraín is a great director, do not miss his work.

As a comedy It fails miserably
1 February 2020
As a comedy It fails miserably. It has the worst first act I have seen in a long time. Even the nostalgic Kevin Smith movie charm is gone for those first 45 minutes. The acting is really bad escept for a couple of cameos and Jason Mewes. The only fun to watch things were the meta film jokes. I also liked the scene with Ben Affleck, in which he basically explains why this film was made. I understand what this movie means to the director but didn't love It.

I am looking forward to see the rest of his work
1 February 2020
Existentialism is over and very much alive at the same time in this movie. It was quite an experience to watch this at cinema.

Even though I really liked my first contact with his work, I think Roy Andersson might be one of this authors that make films that grow inside you after watching It when you reflect on them.

I am looking forward to see the rest of his work.

I understand the praises It has recieved through all these years
1 February 2020
First time I see this classic piece of North American cinema and I have to say that I understand the praises It has recieved through all these years. It was charming and funny, but not just that. Steven Spielberg's directing, John Williams' score and Allen Daviau's cinematography were excellent.

Watching it on big screen was an absolute blast. The whole audience had a terrific time.

It is an absolute joy to watch Greta's work
1 February 2020
It is an absolute joy to watch Greta's work, her movies are full of life and It is really hard not to connect with the characters. The writting is great, specially the conversations between the girl and her parents.

Having said that, I feel like she gave a step forward with her next movie, with a more complex structure and personality in the directing.

Interesting voice
22 January 2020
Good looking movie that relates a tale reminiscent of those classic ones that seem to be around since ever.

The director has an interesting voice but the filmmaking looked amateurish at moments, specially the transitions she decided to use. It drags on a bit during the second act but It was a good experience overall even though I didn't love It.

Production design
22 January 2020
How a story starred by puppets with basically no facial expression can be so expresive? The answer lies in the production design. Because of the dressing an atmosphere is created.

With this inheritor of the German expressionism is hard not to remember those night when, late at night, we went to bed and what we felt in this journey.

The Safdie brothers capture the atmosphere of New York streets and the persona of the people who made a living in them.

Would like to see this guys style introduced in movies that are not set in this city just to see if It works or not. Worth a watch.

Takes the not challenging biographical feel good period piece to a higher level
18 January 2020
In Little Women Greta Gerwig takes the not challenging biographical feel good period piece to a higher level. By that, It becomes something richer and more complex.

The acting is great and every character works independently. This is very important in Greta Gerwig's films because her stamp is not noticeable in the directing but with the stories she wants to tell and the characters of those she uses to do so.

I would like to recommend you "Our little sister" (2015) by Hirokazu Kore-Eda, also about the relationship between sisters.

Funny
18 January 2020
Funny. Premise, script, acting, everything in this movie is funny. It is hard to believe that at some point halfway through the movie there is an event that makes you hold your breath for a few minutes like It does. In this one Taika Waititi goes for a more Wes Anderson like directing and framing than I remember from his previous films, but you can tell he is behind the project beacuse of the humour It emantes. Overall It was an absolute joy to watch and I would like to make an special mention for Scarlett Johansson who managed to bring to live a character that acts like 3 different people but yet feels real in this crazy universe.

If you are fond of Taika Waititi's humour don't miss It.

Kenji Mizoguchi shows the beauty and tragedy, both faces of sacrifice
18 January 2020
Masterfully directed, Kenji Mizoguchi shows the beauty and tragedy, both faces of sacrifice. The beauty of sacrificing entirely for someone and the tragedy of becomeing nothing else than that, and accepting, at the end of the day, every consecuence of It. This is one of this cases in which, somehow, the movie manages to get deep inside me. It was really nice to get the chance to see this masterpiece of altruistic human solidary act on big screen.

The enemy and his plan sounds stupid as hell, but it was just an excuse for the rest of It, and I am okay with It.

1917, it's not that great
16 January 2020
On one hand we have; solid acting, great costume and production design and good cinematography (especially during the "flare night" scene). On the other one the script was effective, at times, but very simple, and directing and editing were going for a one take type of film which they didn't take It to It's logical extreme cuting in obvious moments. However, the only things I'm sure we all agree will be the bad CGI and the overused and annoying music that was anything but helpful for the experience except for a couple of scenes.

I have to say tho It is pretty hard get an immersive experience from a movie If you spend first 30 minutes smelling popcorn and hearing how people eat and drink like animals. And, ofcourse, not watching a great movie helps I guess.

Howard Hawks' type humour really helps
15 January 2020
I saw this on big screen, but there was something wrong with It. The colours were no right, for example, the representative pink dress was completely red. I don't know what happened, it could be the copy they got, and the cinema theatre had nothing to do with it, or maybe the proyector was not properly calibrated (I even saw the workers laugh about that after It finished).

But anyway, this was not an impediment to enjoy the movie, and that's what I did. Howard Hawks' type humour really helps to make this one a memorable movie, because without that and the well crafted script It would be pretty forgettable. Even some dancing moments were terribely choregraphed, you could tell this two had no idea about dancing.

First Marilyn Monroe movie I see, and yeah, she is not good. But she fits the role perfectly y must say.

A good movie for what It is, with the best creator cameo ever.
15 January 2020
So far, I was able to enjoy this franchaise but I had to admit there weren't great movies. I would say the nostalgia did save those previous movies from rooting in oblivion. But this one took this idea of making a Shin-Chan movie to a whole new level, making it much more cinematographic and distinguishing it. Now, the visuals are better crafted, wich elevates the comedy and the overall experience. And you can tell there is a voice that wants to be heard , and he manages to do so even in a Sin-Chan franchise movie. A good movie for what It is, with the best creator cameo ever.

Very bad, simple and not thought provoking

Very bad, simple and not thought provoking. Exactly the opposite of what they were going for.

Just watch Angel's egg by Mamoru Oshii. The director of this thing was just envious of that movie.

Not a very good documentary at the end of the day
11 January 2020
He was a great man with a great voice. It is just sad Ron Howard got to direct It. Didn't like how they filmed the interviews and hated the editing choices of non original material, every time you could tell a cut or effect was added in postproduction felt so shabby and made me say: "damn, if only the filmmaking was better this could be great or atleast do justice to the singer".

Not a very good documentary at the end of the day. But I still enjoyed It, i just love Luciano Pavarotti.

The movie going experience of the year
11 January 2020
If there is a movie that justifies going to the cinema just to get the best possible experience out of a movie from 2019, this is It. The aspect ratio and black&white cinematography combined with the setting creates such an oppressive atmosphere that locks you up completely. The story draggs you deep into the characters until you get lost in them, magnificently lead throughout the whole movie by these excellent actors. And last but not least, much of the personality lies in the sound, specially sound design and the ancient english characters speak.

When I watched It in September in the San Sebastián International Film Festival I thought, this might be the movie going experience of the year. And my opinion hasn't changed.

Mizoguchi creates a tiny universe with a few characters that somehow manages to maintain in balance
11 January 2020
Mizoguchi creates a tiny universe with a few characters that somehow manages to maintain in balance throughout the entire film. This is achieved because every character feels real, that means they can be right and wrong and there is not a single character that has the absolute truth. Very simple filmmaking precisely thought out. With no ostentation the director decides to stay in the shade and put the story and characters in the spotlight.

After watching It on DVD a couple of years ago, I got to see It on the big screen thanks to the Bilbao Art House Zinema.

Both this and the previous one have the exact same first act
9 January 2020
Both this and the previous one have the exact same first act. The only thing that I appreciate and like more about this one than the first one, was that the first one felt nothing more like an extra long episode, while this one feels like a real special, living an adventure we couldn't experiece just watching the TV show.

But it shares the main problem with the previous one, is too long, and I can feel it.
