Jimmy in Saigon (2022)
Very well produced, interesting, entertaining
This is a personal film for the filmmaker and very well put together so it doesn't seem like too independent film-y, certainly not amateurish. Absolutely recommended particularly if the subject matter is interesting to you. I saw it at the Reeling Film Festival in Chicago and you could tell the audience was with the film all the way through. Special shout-out for the music and the use of music throughout the film, very well done and really makes "Jimmy in Saigon" rise above most documentaries and gives the film its tone and feeling. There are MANY interview subjects, which I appreciate in a documentary, and they are so sincere and articulate. They are allowed to breathe, too, so it doesn't feel like they are edited to bits to support a point of view or story.
Restaurants on the Edge (2019)
Great idea but nauseating production
I love the beautiful locations and I'm interested in the local food in the locations but I could not deal watching this. It super pretentious, the hosts trips are very very loosely attached to the restaurant so I wondered why we were doing some of this stuff. Too much slo-mo and attempts to artificially create drama. Ultimately, I found it to be unwatchable.
The Biggest Little Farm (2018)
The story is interesting but I hated this movie
This film is the worst, most persistent display of documentary cliches that I have ever seen.
Dolor y gloria (2019)
A thinker's movie
I'm not sure that you would call this entertaining but it sure is interesting and has sparked a lot of great conversation. Antonio Banderas is great in this.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Just plain bad
Those of you who haven't seen this movie, do yourself a favor and skip it. If you gave this movie a high rating when it was out, I suggest you try to watch it again. I'm betting that you will see what I saw -- a really bad movie. In fact, it is so bad, I'm actually taking this time out of my day to write this. I feel ripped off by it.
The dialogue was so bad, the audience was laughing at it throughout the movie. With the crap they had to work with, the actors didn't shine either. Chris Pine came off stiff and unlike-able. He's still not my favorite Kirk but he's been good prior. With nothing to work with in terms of a script, the cast is just limp and uninteresting.
The story itself is silly and implausible. Now, I know in science fiction you have to suspend belief to some degree but this story just stretched me way to far in terms of mad coincidences.
I couldn't wait for this film to end. I'm a life-long Star Trek fan but I'm bailing on this reboot series. "Beyond" was the worst Star Trek movie I've ever seen.
