The Way I See It (2020)
Where can I purchase this?
I just watched this on MSNBC. I missed the part about Sandy Hook and would really like to see it through the lens of Peter Souza. I've always assumed that day was the hardest day of Obama's presidency.
Loved the story of how Souza was an apolitical photo journalist. Worked for President Reagan. Then, President Obama. And then, transformed from a fly on the wall to having a voice that honors America, love, honor, truth, integrity, and human empathy.
Tommy (2020)
I'm turning in to 2nd episode
The pilot was good enough to get me to tune in, again. Love Edie Falco. As previously mentioned, she has good instincts in choosing roles.
Aquarius (2015)
Good after a rocky start
SPOILER ALERT!!!
Having now binge watched all episodes as a Duchovny fan, I've got to be honest and say I was not taken in by the first two episodes that premiered this week on NBC. But I'm glad that I stuck with it and continued through the entire first season. It took some time for the series to catch its stride.
Set in Los Angeles 2 years before the Tate/La Bianca murders, Duchovny and Grey Damon (Friday Night Lights) play detectives with a generation gap who tangle with an early Charlie Manson. Some Justified players are also along for the ride. David Meunier plays a character I think is loosely based on Manson associate Tex Watson. Abbey Miller plays Manson's first follower, 'Mother Mary,' who comes into the family fold about half way through. Gaius Charles (also from FNLs) plays a Black Panther's leader.
As I said, the first two episodes, I didn't care for them. The loosely based Manson story was distracting, chaotic, even corny. At first, there is too much going on with that and Duchovny's character, Sam Hodiak, with a former love, her daughter, and his son. I was much more interested in getting to know the core cast in the Detective Squad. And the series finally goes there, moves through time, and takes on other cases and stories. Those law enforcement relationships are rich and honest, and I really enjoyed those stories a lot. Well cast and well acted. Hope to see a lot more of that in Season 2 because that is where the gold is.
Duchovny does a good job developing his character. As do he and Damon in slowly developing an unlikely partnership. Love the female officer. All of them. Even the racist officers and the Neanderthols of the 1960'd LAPD. As I said, it's honest.
I lived in So Cal during this time. I remember the hippies, the racial strife, the music, counter culture, and the political Revolution and unrest of the turbulent 60's. The Vietnam War. I was a kid, but I vividly remember the times. Manson should have been a minor backdrop in this series as a time marker . . . . and maybe in Season 2, he will be.
Early Edition (1996)
Missed Early Edition on first run
How did I miss this show when CBS aired it the first time around? I think I must have been in school and/or raising kids.
I found it years later in syndication, after becoming a fan of Friday Night Lights, and have had to watch the episodes out of sequence. Still, what a wholesome, feel-good show. Wish we had more of this available, today.
Kyle Chandler's Gary Hobson is a modest, unassuming, reluctant hero who gets tomorrow's news today in the form of the Chicago Sun Times and is played to honest perfection. Co-stars Fisher Stevens and Shanesia Davis (both seasoned performers), as Gary's friends Chuck and Marissa, have excellent chemistry with Chandler. There's a push-pull of morality in the series: Marissa, who has a heart of gold, guides Gary to use the information in the paper as a gift and to do what's right, while Gary's old buddy Chuck is always wanting to use the information in the paper to get himself rich. Luckily for the viewers, Gary also tends to do the right thing, when not resenting his plight with the paper.
Under the backdrop of a 4 season mystery as to why Gary suddenly begins receiving the paper . . . Each episode (for the most part, as there are a couple of two-parter episodes in the series), is a stand-alone adventure where Gary is warned in the paper that something bad is about to happen in the Windy City, and he has less than 24 hours to change the outcome.
Early Edition can be dramatic or heart-warming, but it can also be light and campy, giving these actors a full palette upon which to draw in performing their craft. My only beef is: When will Seasons 3 and 4 be released on DVD (or the entire series online), so that I can finally watch this series that I love in sequence?
