True Detective (2014)
Season 4
Really enjoyed this season. I'm watching it for the third time and paying more attention to all the details. The acting is fantastic, I love the unusual characters, the scenery, the sets and the placement of the camera lens are all really well done.
I wasn't a complete fan of the ending. It did seem a bit rushed. I would've expected the men to put up more of a fight and would have liked the women to have done something more complex and interesting to have accomplished their end.
On the second round of watching Season 4, I contemplated more the ideas of mental illness and its intersection with death and loss. The themes of hopelessness and suicide were thought provoking as well.
The location, the cultural aspects and the indigenous actors are fascinating. I suspect this season will have it's own cult following.
The Adderall Diaries (2015)
Way better than I thought it would be
I can usually tell if I'll like a film in the first 5 minutes. This film had me at minute 1. All the actors are excellent. The themes are thought provoking, something I think just about everyone can relate to. We all have different memories of our childhood. One sister or brother remembers it one way, you another, and the parents yet another. I have found that over time I want to strengthen my memories, or at least have them be justified and validated. Perhaps we each begin justifying and validating our memories to fit a certain story. How often do our memories paint us in a better light and someone else in a less admirable position. Can we be unbiased in our memories?
London Spy (2015)
Not what you would expect
I have to agree a bit with the other review in that I was expecting something more like James Bond. However, I ended up really enjoying the fact that I had no idea where the story was going. Ben Whishaw is riveting. It's definitely a slow burn but in my opinion a good one. Also I found the love scene between the two men one of the best I've seen. It wasn't empty and physical, there seemed to be true emotion, which I appreciated. Ben Whishaw captured my deep affection in the movie Bright Star. He is the only reason I kept watching London Spy. I was just so happy to see him again. By the end of the episode I was a fan of London Spy. I have to edit my review. When I got to episode 5 I just wanted to see the end and be done with it. It meandered way to much for me and it seemed to lack direction.
Tian jiang xiong shi (2015)
Epic Journey
I have to admit the acting left a lot to be desired except for John Cusack. John Cusack elevated the whole film. If you love Jakie Chan fight scenes you'll likely find some enjoyment in the choreography that no one else does like him. I really liked the cinematography. The sweeping scenes, the architecture, the look of all the different tribes. There was also an idea that I found very redeeming in the movie. The possibility of what we could create if we all came together. I liked the friendship between the two leaders. I'll give a shout out to the warrior woman too!! To tell you the truth I have nothing left to add but regretfully I have to write ten lines of stuff to get this review accepted. So I'll just write whatever in the hopes that the main part of my review will be accepted. Thank you for reading!!!
