The Ritual Killer (2023)
Not bad but needed some work
The film was not bad. The storyline was good. There was a problem with the lights, it had excessive light for this genre, which was killing the mood in one or two occasions. The lead actor was doing his best, and I feel he wanted to take some time to act better, but the producers were in a hurry. I think this is why Freeman's acting was pretentious and not realistic, he didn't have time. There were some awkward editing moments, as when Freeman discovers the girl and not help her immediately. As for the final scene that many people didn't like, to be honest I completely understand the meaning, and whoever is from a country near Africa and Balkans, can understand. But it needed better direction. Maybe they should shoot it from behind his back, it would add to the suspense and the mystery. In reality, they should have mailed them to the parents of the victims, according to this tradition, but ok, it's a movie! What bothered me the most, was the music score!!! I truly believe that a better score and a good editing would have saved this !!
Parfum (2018)
I hoped it would be nice thriller
But no, it had to have unnecessary sex scenes 5 minutes from the beginning. This is a clear sign that the plot is going to be non existent. I thought I could handle the cinematography if it was a good thriller at least. But no. Classic European pseudo-culture flop. The Director and the cinematographer must learn to put some effort , because all they did was frame all the faces to the centre and ok job done let's go to eat some lunch. Let the editor try to fix this , together with some heavy Color correction. The Logline was great, the trailer was great, the actual series is a flop. They throw some random sex and they think they can get away with it . No .
Eftyhia (2019)
Not a real biopic. Cringey, yet the director is good
I thought it was going to be good. I really hoped so because there was such a hype. And the director did a pretty good work here. But...
This is a very depressing cringy film, as most Greek films are lately. I suggest you avoid it if you are not Greek because it might be a biopic, but it doesn't help anyone that doesn't know Eftihia Papagianopoulou or the music, to understand how great she was and the impact she made. The films is just around her family, very shortly too, nothing more. The cinematography and the direction are good. But the screenplay is giving cringe. They use an event and apparently (I suppose) every song is a part of her life , but like a vision she sees everyone on stage, especially dead people. Didn't anyone warn them from the production team? How did they approve this screenplay? Unless they didn't plan to distribute to theatres, and keep it just for 1-2 local festivals. Also they seem to use non-actors too in the film, such as the presenter at the opening scene, as he is a songwriter, of a genre that has nothing to do with Eftihia's genre. And lots of cameos of local actors, just for the sake of mentioning names, they don't serve the plot, they are like extras, just to get a pay check. Honestly, the producers should have asked for a director to be able to focus on her tremendous impact and that she was known about selling lyrics because she was poor, and didn't know that she could earn from rights too, but it was her decision. Anyway, the music score was not interesting, and luckily they used some of the artist's songs for the soundtrack. The gay character was too pretentious, but it seems that the Greek acting style is pretentious in general or it was the directors preference, so the acting doesn't seem real, except for a few actors. The protagonist at elder years, her second husband, and Sotiria. The ending was cringey too, almost silly. The production design was very good, but it seemed like her house was an abandoned building ready to fall on their heads. Wasn't it dangerous to film there? Anyway, give it a try, just be prepared for drama and cringe.
Magnitika pedia (2021)
This is why Greek cinema is dying
I liked the fact that it was a road trip. But it was heavily edited and it was impossible to focus on the scenery. Only the protagonist was acting quite normally. I understand that it was a low budget, which doesn't bother me. In fact I appreciate it for this and only this. But it does not fulfill the requirements of the Academy to be even nominated. The Oscars are not film festival. It was embarrassing that it was proposed from Greece. As if the authorities didn't even see the movie and proposed it with some kind of corruption process or nepotism. There is no other explanation. It was barely adequate for international festivals.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Ridiculous, don't waste your time
It does not tick any box. There is no plot, the characters are not developed at all, some of them don't have any real reason to be included in the film, such as the daughter. The camera movement is very bad, as if trying to impress and randomly choose a camera movement from a list. Not art at all. Cinematography is quite ok.it's so sad that these wonderful actors participated in this parody. It's not even a comedy. It must have been a torture for the actors, because the characters were meaningless and aliens. There is no message in this film, and it doesn't entertain you, it's just annoy you. The music........... is completely uninspired. Zero talent. And the editor just took pieces and puts them in irrelevant places and they seem ludicrous. This thing is nominated for Oscars, and has won so many awards? Maybe with some laundering ... it is not a good film .
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Childish acting and cinematography
This is a complete failure. An expensive one. The acting is very childish, as if they are in an animation for 5 year old kids, and very similar to some Greek soap operas where they speak in a fake manner as if they are comedic robots. The plot ? There is no plot at all, and no mystery to solve!!! Because nothing happens, they keep talking without cause. Daniel Craig delivered a completely different acting comparing to Knives Out, so there is no continuity. And all the actors perform badly. Only Edward Norton which is a great actor, performs a little better, as he knows to work his face expressions better. But the Director makes him and all of them move their hands in a ridiculous and unrealistic way, and I bet that Edward Norton acted as a professional and kept his word and participated (obviously they offered lots of money), otherwise he would have left the minute he understood that the Director failed so much this time.
But what was the worst, even worse than the cheap and horrible production design in the interiors, was the cinematography. In the first movie it was a piece of art. But here.... Oh my ... was a disaster. By all means. Also the light was so flat!!!!! There was not a hint of art in this film.
They say it was filmed in Greece, but I truly doubt!... Only 2 minutes in the whole film, and I cannot trust that it's not green screen, as the rest of the film! Nothing authentic. Also the music score and soundtrack was a failure. They show Greek locations and the composer delivers Arabic music.... I rest my case.
Knives out was a masterpiece. This one is a disappointment. I think that they spent too much money for the stars that forgot the art.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Failure sorry
The direction is awful, it's like cheap series in the 00s. The dialogues are childish, but not for children. The blonde protagonists has a duckface from lip fillers and she cannot express. The costumes are bearable. The story is very shallow and you really can't follow. I cannot believe they got such great actors to play in this absurdity, it's amazing that they accepted to participate. Also there mustn't be any kind of preparation or research before creating the screenplay, as they mistakenly say that Hercules was a fairytale but he was a real person in antiquity. The light is only good for the evil school, and for the good school is no light design at all. Wish they sent this money on upcoming filmmakers, they would have done it better.
Mr. Nobody (2009)
Depressing and without meaning
I give a few stars just for the nice direction and Jared Lego's acting. I really wish the script was better so that we could enjoy the different paths in life. Very depressing, it destroyed my Sunday. And I was prepared, but not enough! It is a bad movie. The light and direction is very nice but this film is an example of having everything, a good story, a good director, good actors, but cannot put them together in a cohesive manner that can be easier for the viewer to understand the meaning. I wonder, if this was a mistake, or if it was designed this way and they really wanted to present this result.
Motel Makeover (2021)
Outdated designs, because they were too trendy
The motel will be outdated next holiday season. They will have to redecorate everything next season and pay a fortune again, because this 2020 look is already old on 2021. Their voices are annoying, they seem to be drunk all the times. These girls really don't know anything about real renovations. The wood they painted, it was very expensive and well preserved. They destroyed it. They also painted the rare rocks. The restaurant has too few tables, it will be financial disaster for their partners. The wood they have put behind the beds, is not easy to be cleaned, so you know it is going to be dirty. The rooms don't have enough lights, so they will be very dark during the night (not great for the ladies that get there for bachelorette and need to have good lighting for makeup). They spent too much money for the window in the check-in bar, and paid engineers etc, for no reason. That area should be prepared last. They repainted the rooms too many times, and lost days. The pool should be their first concern, but they lost time for indoors decoration. Renovating a hotel, is different than renovating a home.
Beckett (2021)
Realistic and wonderful acting
This is pure culture. I adore the cinematography, and the locations. Great acting, very realistic situations. A great movie, a mix of European and American film. Probably the bad reviews are fake, or by people that cannot appreciate a good movie when they see it and prefer Avengers.
Pan (2015)
Bad movie with irrelevant songs which make you cringe
Bad and expensive film. I was disappointed because it was really not Peter Pan. It is misleading. Also the use of some well known songs, makes you cringe extremely. Only Jackman worths his money, but we would be great if Hook was really a bad pirate and not a soft man with depression. I wish they had spent less money for the CGI that creates some action that is very very confusing and without meaning, and instead invest in writers to create real plot and believable dialogues.
¿Quién Mató a Sara? (2021)
I loved the direction
I watched it in two days because it is very interesting. Great direction, nice cinematography, great acting. Best acting is by "Elroy" character and "Cesar". Great thriller. I see that many people are annoyed by the sex, but this is a rough series about a murder and a casino boss. You should see it coming. I definitely recommend it, it is eye-opening.
The Prom (2020)
Boring
Very boring. The only thing that worths it is the message for opening, and that there are many celebrities that pretend that they are activists, while it is just a PR scam. The best acting of course was Streep's but it was not enough to save this film.
Pretend It's a City (2021)
Imagine you are not American
I cannot understand why an extremely grumpy person is considered "funny". I could not stand to watch it after 20minutes. This person is a misanthrope, with absolutely no sense of humour. It's a very depressing series. I've been to New York, yes people are very rude, but not as depressing as this Fran makes the city to be. Imagine that you are European and you see this series on Netflix. You don't know who that person is, you see it is a very annoying person not welcoming at all. You understand that this person might be important (!) for some certain groups, or literature or art, but is really is unbearable..... because as a non American, you don't know about any achievements this person has in the past. You only see this extremely grumpy person without any charm that could make your mind feel intrigued for example by this person's warmth or intellect and keep watching. There is nothing interesting here
Live by Night (2016)
"Exceptional"
Thank you Netflix for giving us the opportunity to discover this gem. It was a pleasure to enjoy Ben as a director. European style, loving it. Whoever sees this movie understands that the bad critics reviews are paid. Great gangster movie, good acting, pure art.
