As an artist, this movie changed my life
I have only just seen this film yesterday and I already know it's changed my life. It really delves deep into what goes on inside the mind of an artist. Fellini really outdoes himself and it touches on portions of the mind that few films ever have. You get a sense of both reality and surrealism that you rarely see. At times you don't know where you are and what to make of what you're watching, but then suddenly you realize the depth of what you've just watched once it "clicks." This is truly a masterpiece and should be watched by every artist and filmmaker. The conclusion of the film was also incredible as Guido learns that nothingness and rebuilding your ideas and thoughts are just as important as having them in the first place. Overall this film is really powerful and I highly recommend it.
When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts (2006)
Spike, you've done it again
Spike, you've done it again. As a huge Spike fan this is up there with one of his best, if not his best documentary. Such an important film in all aspects of humanity and filmmaking. I love how he really analyzed every aspect of this disaster not just from a nature level but also from the disaster of the government's response to help these people. Not saying it would have been tough regardless, but it's clear now the government could have done more. Spike is right on the money with everything and the whole documentary just breaks your heart. He also really looks at it from every possible angle and it's really refreshing to see a documentary that takes its time and tells the FULL story.
Blaze (2018)
Impressive directing by Ethan Hawke
As a big fan of both Townes and Blaze, I knew Ethan Hawke would the perfect person to direct this, if not Linklater (who surprisingly was in the film!) You can tell he knows his Texas history down to a science and really treats the story with care and passion. It was honestly better than the 6.5 rating led me to believe. The acting from everyone was great and engaging. You could tell the budget was not huge but you wouldn't even have wanted it to be anyways with a story about a Blaze Foley. The lead actor also did an excellent job both singing and acting and really gave a great performance. Definitely recommend checking this out for any Blaze fans.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Best movie of 2023 so far
This film is excellent all the way around. I always liked Nolan's work, but this one cemented me as viewing him as a great filmmaker period, and not just a great blockbuster filmmaker. The script is extremely sharp and the stand out performance is Cillian Murphy who really puts his heart into the role. It does not feel like 3 hours and even though I knew a lot of the story, it was still very engaging and enjoyable. This one honestly rivals Memento and The Dark Knight for me as Nolan's greatest achievement. I would say it's even better than the Batman trilogy because the script is so much sharper. Don't walk, run to see this one in theaters!
