White Chicks (2004)
Underrated funny comedy
I haven't seen too many Wayans Bros. movies, but I am glad I saw this one. A group of friends and I had won free passes to a preview before it was actually released and we were all uniformly amused. The movie is funny and entertaining. Though it is also silly and often stupid, It is chock full of fun gags and mishaps and great jokes and lines.
The Wayans are consistently funny in this film and the characters around them are equally funny, whether they are good guys, bad guys or in between, the whole movie is funny.
I was in stitches through majority of the movie. It is certainly not a work of art and the premise has more than been done before, but Black working class guys into White, rich, snobby Hamptons girls...c'mon, it is vintage!!
I think people are way too hung up on the whole race issue and take things too literal when it comes to poking fun at whites, blacks, rich, poor or whatever!! Take it at face value. A good, er, uh "family" movie with lots of laughs. Even if you are not a great fan of the Wayans, it is worth seeing.
Cocoon (1985)
Good Fountain of Youth premise
Cocoon was a good sleeper movie for it's time. Take a bunch of old, washed up actors and throw them together in a film that turns out to be entertaining to all ages.
Wilford Brimley is great and so is Don Ameche, Hume Cronyn and Jack Guilford and Brian Dennehy and Steve Guttenberg. The old guys (and gals) seem to all work well together. I loved the storyline and the humor and the touching, sad side as well. Those of us who have or had grandparents at the time can relate to their aches and pains and wish that they really could live forever and never get old and never die. WOW...what a planet that would be!!
Most movies dealing with the elderly turn out to be depressing or boring, but this hit home with everyone. It gives everyone who is sick or aging hope.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Not what I envisioned
I am still wondering what the big deal is about this movie. I can see that it was well made and that Bruce Willis played a different kind of role, sort of a caring, sensitive persona.
i kept waiting for the movie to get better and since i have friends who all have big mouths and told me the ending, maybe that was why I did not enjoy it as much. Nonetheless, I found it boring and drawn out. "I see dead people" was probably a giveaway, but still it lacked excitement and substance.
Maybe it is me and I am just too critical, but I have often found myself not liking movies that everyone else seems to think are masterpieces.
I like Bruce Willis and he has made some good movies, some bad ones. This one falls somewhere in the middle. i really tried to get into it, but maybe it was too deep for me. I am willing to see it again and maybe, even though I know the ending, I will appreciate it more.
It was not a disaster though.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
WOW..Makes you think!!
A true epic and classic by Mel Gibson. Amazing that the Lethal Weapon and womanizing What Women Want and Mad Max/Thunderdome Heartthrob and cursing sex symbol can create(or recreate) such an epic. True or false, accurate or not and whether you are a believer, it is a powerful and gripping and more than anything...disturbing depiction of Jesus's last 12 hours. I had a very difficult time sitting through it and watching the extremely graphic torture scenes. I found myself in tears and kept wondering when it was going to be over. Ironically, at the time I was watching it, I was on vacation in Arizona and I had developed a toothache prior to entering the theater. I can assure you that my toothache as painful as it was, paled in comparison to what Jesus was going through or went through. I know that everything is relative, but he REALLY took one for the team so to speak.
I have read other reviews on this film.
I really did not see the Antisemitism that everyone was ranting about. Sure Pontius is known as a tyrant and a monster, but the Film was the focus of Christs last 12 hours before his crucifixion, not about Pontius. I am not oversimplifying his portrayal, but the bottom line is that the Jews did not kill Jesus either way. The film is graphic, gory and even scary, to put it mildly, but it definitely drives home the point!! Whatever you perceive the point to be.
It is a film that everyone should see at least once. It is not for the faint of heart or the squeamish, but since it is (based on) historical facts and is Biblical, it is something that should be seen.
It is hard to sometimes read the subtitles and watch the movie, but I know Mel Gibson wanted to create the illusion of the way the people spoke at the time, so it was tolerable.
Overall, it was a very well-done and well documented movie.
Porky's (1981)
Get it at(or lose it) at PORKY'S!!
Porky's has a great mixture of humor, sex and yes, drama all wrapped in one libidinous flick.
I like movies that are raunchy and yet have a good plot. Some scenes are more memorable than others like the locker room scene with"Lassie" and the infamous shower scene. Others just help the story along. All in all it is a good movie about friendship, sex, relationships, and even bigotry. All of which comes full circle. It is too bad they ruined a better than average movie with two bad sequels.
I was only 13 when I was actually "Allowed" to see this movie and I liked it for all the obvious reasons.
Liar Liar (1997)
Beware of THE CLAW!!! :-))
This is comedy at it's finest. Carrey is great in this movie. Every once in a while there is a script that is written and an actor that is made for the script...this is that movie. I mean really, who else could've acted so goofy and still made this such a funny flick?? He was perfect for this role.
I loved tender moments as well, which Carrey always seems to have at least one of in each movie.
It takes a lot to make me laugh in the theaters and with this one I could not stop laughing the whole time.
Good family fun and a good lesson about lying and stretching the truth.
The Fugitive (1993)
Great action movie for all.
This is what a movie should be. Can Harrison Ford ever be bad in a movie?? Well maybe, but not in this one!
This is great from beginning to end. What a cast also. Ford Tommy Lee Jones, and all the supporting cast are great. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole thing and was so happy for Kimble at the end and you really felt his plight. I liked the mixture of suspense , action and even humor throughout. The overall ending varies from that of the original series, but hey that's Hollywood.
Great film for all Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee fans.
If not for Schindlers List that year(Which was phenomenal and deserved the Oscar) The Fugitive may have been the winner.
Cast Away (2000)
Good, but not as good as I thought it would be.
This film like a lot of films was hyped up and did not, in my opinion, live up to the hype. It was to me, very slow moving to him finally "arriving" on the island. The acting was good and the story was easily comprehensible, but overall, it is a better than average Tom Hanks movie. I think the FedEx scenes were long and drawn out and were not completely necessary to the plot. Tom Hanks talks to Volley ball(Wilson) on deserted, uncharted island!! That is the basic crux of the movie.
In other words, been there, done that(Well, maybe not a Volley ball)!! I think that Hanks saved this movie from being less than adequate. Helen Hunt was good, but there is not enough of her in the movie either.
Lock Up (1989)
Good movie, but NOT Rocky caliber!!
I liked the movie and I liked the cast and the mixture of real inmates in the film. The film is intense and a good representation of friendship. Even criminals can have their good moments. ROCKY, though, it is not!! It is a typical, predictable and sometimes redundant Stallone film that pretty much ends the way all of his films end....with him being the ass kicker. I know, he is the star, but he has that Rocky typecast now and must always be a fighter. Overall, I liked Donald Sutherland as the demented warden and John Amos as the guard. Both are great actors who show their diversity in acting. It is an entertaining and satisfying film overall.
