Passage to Marseille (1944)
Raise Your Hand...
Raise your hand if you wrote a review of this film and didn't have a father who was a Naval flight instructor and and Uncle (his brother) who was a bomber Captain in the European Air Combat Theater in WW2.... This is a really great film showing a fair look at the travails, dangers, sacrifice, and loss suffered in America's last truly justifiable war.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
What would you do, IF?
I expected I'd think this film was "Ok", but the thought train it provoked was pretty impactful. It's a plausible scenario, considering the fact that a strongly supported scientific theory is that dinosaurs were wiped off the earth from an asteroid hit. How would each of us end our days, if we all knew the day and the hour, and it was global?
My Reputation (1946)
"Sudser"... PLEASE...
This is an excellent WW2-era film! Sharp dialogue, fine acting, great sets and filming. Need we even mention music by Max Steiner and Ms. Stanwyck's costuming by Edith Head? Then there's Lucile Watson, a grand dame of supporting character actresses, as churlish in this role as she was a fine sport in society matron sort of way in "Watch on the Rhine". 9/10.
Fine Line (2014)
Unique. In a good way.
Hmmm... it's rare that I'm not really sure about what to say about a film... this is a great film, without being a "Great Film". Simple, a great observation on open minds, acceptance, and compassion. Some timely and valid wisdom. Freebie on Amazon.
Terrible Angels (2012)
Creepy and Engaging
Solidly acted story of the things that can get out of control when YOU'RE out of control. It's not presented as preachy or a moral lesson, but when you're drugging' and running' with the hoods in all the usual places they frequent, well...stuff happens that isn't always pleasant.
There was one huge gap in storyline nearer to the end that drove me NUTS - how could you not notice that she...!! - but a good, albeit disturbing, film overall. The actors generally play reality straight, and don't drag the film down by over-the-top portrayals of character types, and that I appreciated. I think I was extra disturbed by this film based on the fact it was shot in Oregon, where I live, and that they chose the town of Keizer (evidenced by a police uniform early on, that is actually known to be really druggy and high-crime.
