Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Strange New Worlds (2022)
This is a perfect sci-fi show.
So this is a perfect show. I wasn't really looking forward to this, after the downward turn of Discovery. I was wrong, I was wrong!
Basically all the integrity of TNG with the explorers spirit of ToS. You might have to get over the fact things aren't exactly as you know them from the broken... disjointed timeline that has been cobbled together over a 50 year period in a way that was never intended. I did.
Watch it. Love it. Thank me later.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)
A shockingly sublime parody
This movie is shockingly good - I must say those who rated it low may well have not understood it fully.
This movie operates on many comic levels, parody being only the most obvious. The producers of this movie have constructed a very real imaginary character that encapsulates many of the other biopics we have seen over the years.
The other big note here is, the music was really really good. I am not a country fan but many of these songs sound very much like they would have been big hits at the times they were supposedly made. This is of course because they are based around actual hits, but nonetheless they are very good.
Check it out.
Alexander (2004)
An example of how a vast budget can be severely wasted on a horrendous script
Specifically, I am reviewing the Final Cut 3.5 hour monstrosity.
This movie is just terrible. If the accents weren't bad enough (and they are bad, some of those Macedonian Greeks sure sound Irish) the script, costumes, sets, chronology, and especially acting in this movie are just embarrassing.
This is the story of Alexander the GREAT apparently, a whining impetuous Irish child who likes to scream at his Countess-Dracula mommy.
The homosexuality in this movie is not even worth discussing. Alexander by the histories was very likely in relationships with men, this was perfectly acceptable at the time in Greece, and it is of little relevance. Put it from your mind. There are plenty better reasons to be disgusted by this movie. Don't waste your time imposing Christian morality on this movie.
Everyone involved in producing this film should be ashamed that they took one of histories greatest conquerers and reduced him to a squalling crying child who spends more time playing with his boy toys than advancing his empire.
For shame.
